Miracle treats Sierra Davidson and Tristan Sinclair pick up blizzards from Grand Forks Dairy Queen (DQ) staff members (from left) Debbie Evans, Marita Drexler, Clorice Metcalfe and Josephine Balch during DQ Miracle Treat Day on Thursday. The local DQ raised $2,286 for BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. “Each year, every Dairy Queen in B.C. is involved in this money-raising event,” said Bill Hepper, co-owner of Grand Forks Dairy Queen along with wife Bev. “For every blizzard we sell, we send all the money to children’s hospital. We were busy right up until close. Thank you to all the people that were involved and took time out to buy a blizzard and make this fundraiser a success.” Craig Lindsay photo

Used oil ambassadors visit

Used oil ambassadors Carmen Ang (left) and Nadine Hoyt were in Grand Forks on Aug. 6 to spread the word about proper used oil disposal. The two are ambassadors for the British Columbia Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA), a group that aims to facilitate and increase the collection, management and recycling of used oil and anti-freeze materials in B.C. The ambassadors say the feedback they’ve received from facilities about the program, which has been going on for eight years, has been very positive. “We’ve been going around to return-collection facilities, places where people can drop off used oil, anti-freeze as well as scrap tires, and ask the people there how the program is going and how we can help them out,” said Hoyt. Residents in the Kootenay Boundary can bring their used oil to the following businesses: In Grand Forks – J.D. Towing, Pinegrove Auto and Small Engine Repair and Tomkat Automotive; In Greenwood – Greenwood Auto Centre; and at Christina Lake – Christina Lake Mechanical, and D&D Auto and Mini Storage.
