Chilliwack SAR to the rescue We owe you such a debt of gratitude for your rescue of our dear friend, Ken Dosen. Saturday, Aug. 3 was to be an afternoon of two friends out quadding. But it turned into a nightmare when accidentally Ken and his quad slid off the trail into a 300-foot drop. How horrid it was for his friend following to have seen him go over and then having to leave him to go get help.

The speed in which Chilliwack Search and Rescue, paramedics, ambulances arrived, the rescue with long line and helicopter team, saved his life. I am blown away that our search and rescue team in Chilliwack are all volunteers. This dedication to the public’s safety goes beyond words. Also to the countless friends and total strangers from Sunnyside Campground that

assisted the rescue, and a female stranger on the trail who used her quad to shuttle help to the accident scene, thank you. Currently, Ken is recovering well in Royal Columbian Hospital. For Ken to have survived this fall is a miracle, and to be rescued so quickly, we owe his life to you. Thank you, Chilliwack Search and Rescue. With animals, it’s kill or be killed Re: Cougar shot and killed at Cultus Lake Almost everyone who has written comments on the Internet about this story, wishes that the cougar was sedated and relocated, despite all the things the conservation officers have stated. I for one agree with the conservation officer’s actions. We can’t pretend we’re living in an epi-

sode of Gentle Ben and that wild animals are our friends, because they’re not. Animals have a ‘kill or be killed’ mentality and should be considered expendable, especially if they want to corner a family for the sake of possibly eating their children. And why would he be donated to a First Nations group? So they can stuff him and put

him on display. And if you think it’s cruel to do taxidermy on animals, visit the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve’s display of stuffed animals, and maybe you might learn something. First thing to learn is that animals eat other animals, Including little children. If you animal lovers find yourself on Teapot Hill in the future, and

A rose by any other name... Re: NDP soul search going nowhere (B.C. Views, Aug. 1) A significant aspect of NDP postelection soul searching, following its catastrophic defeat by the forces of free enterprise, will no doubt have to be coming to terms with the need to move the party further to the centre, away from its ideological far left-wing base. While the federal NDP appears to have decided to delete references to “socialism” from its guiding party preamble to make it more palatable politically and competitive electorally, merely removing “socialism as a founding principle, without jettisoning its politically outdated doctrine, will not convince Canadians that the NDP is anything but a socialist party. Shakespeare perhaps said it best in Romeo and Juliet: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Confronted with the political reality of the concept of socialism proving itself to be an abysmal failure throughout the world, being replaced by more free enter-

prise, less government and less social engineering, the question naturally arises as to whether B.C.’s NDP party will be able to “jump over its own ideological shadow” and abandon its traditional stand on the principles of democratic socialism, as defined in the B.C. provincial NDP constitutional preamble: “The New Democratic Party believes that social, economic and political progress in Canada can only be assured by the application of democratic socialist principles to government and the administration of public affairs ... including, where necessary, the extension of the principle of social ownership.” Stripped of its defining political raison d’être, however, NDP soul searching to remain a legitimate electoral contender in the province would make it a journey of heading somewhere into the future without the benefit of a road map and without a clear sense of its destination ... always carrying the baggage of its political past.

another hungry and desperate cougar shows up and thinks about taking a bite out of you or your young children, consider that the cougar couldn’t care less whether you got sedated and taken out of his territory or simply killed and consumed right there. Which one do you think he’d pick? Phil Mante

Keep traffic circles to one lane Not to keep going on about the traffic circle issue, but I myself hate using it because not everyone understands how it works. The first time I ever seen a traffic circle was at least 20 years ago up in Dawson Creek B.C. that traffic circle has only one lane going around, and never did I see anyone not get how to use it! You were either in the circle or you were turning right...pretty simple and kept traffic moving with no accidents. Why Chilliwack would put two lanes baffles me. You only need one lane.
