Karena Lawrence of Smashing Glass & Anything Art in Parksville said her daughter Estée Marquis has always been very crafty. Estee and her friend Danica MacDonald joined Karena at Art in the Garden in Nanoose Bay last month. Karena will be closing down her Parksville gallery at the end of the summer but will be continuing with her glass/art classes at her home studio. Exciting things are happening at VIU’s Deep Bay Marine Field Station. Milner Gardens’ summer music program returned to the stunning facility overlooking Baines Sound on July 25 with guitarist, vocalist and comedian Todd Butler. With a stunning combination of musical parody, whimsical wit, outstanding musicianship, and outrageous satire Todd’s performance had the audience laughing and begging for more. Next up is Phil Dwyer’s Adult Jazz Intensive Ensemble August 22 and The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra on August 30. The doors open at 5:00 p.m. leaving plenty of time to enjoy the view and the delicious food prepared by the talented students in the VIU culinary program before the music starts at 6:30 p.m. Kale has been getting a lot of buzz these days as a superfood. The leafy vegetable is packed with nutrients but it is easy to forget it is healthy when you crunch into a batch of home made kale chips. Ruby Forrester started making her yummy kale chips a couple of years ago and she sells them at the Craig Street Market in Parksville and the Errington Farmers Market. Ruby gets her organic kale from Nanoose Edibles and turns them into crunchy healthy treats with flavours including the Queen of Herbs, Dill Pickle, Cashew Crunch and Aloha. The Hodge brothers who spend their summers in Qualicum Beach may be young but they are not lacking ambition. Back in November they took out a loan and bought a cotton candy vending business. Since then the Cotton Candy Kids have been spinning sugar into sticky sweet floss at school carnivals, corporate events and fairs. 13 year old Robbie and 11 year old twins Dawson and Brandon were vendors at the St. Mark’s Fair July 27. The boys who go to school in Coquitlam are also boy scouts and will no doubt be getting a badge for their entrepreneurial skills. The World Parrot Refuge in Coombs held its second summer garage sale July 27. The Thrift Shop was loaded with treasures to pick from including some lavender products. Wendy Huntbach, founder of the facility which houses hundreds of unwanted and abandoned birds has started a lavender farm on the acreage. Wendy said she is growing the lavender so there will always be income coming in to support the birds long after she is gone. Wendy said she is grateful for all of the support she gets from the community, particularly from Save On Foods in Parksville which she said has been their biggest corporate sponsor since she built the flight centre. There has been a lot of splashing going on at Sunrise Ridge Waterfront Resort in Parksville. The outdoor pool and hot tub officially opened last month and will remain open through the fall.

11 year old Estée Marquis (left) and 10 year old Danica MacDonald had fun selling their whimsical Fimo clay creations at Art in the Garden in Nanoose Bay last month. Estee will be entering one of her creations into the community exhibit at the Coombs Fair August 10 and 11 with hopes of winning a coveted Rosette.

There was delicious food and great entertainment for the first of the Music by the Bay concert series at VIU’s Deep Bay Marine Field Station. Facilities Coordinator, Stephanie Richards was busy July 25 making sure there were plenty of tasty treats for those who came out for a hilarious performance by Todd Butler.

Six year old Leelee Forrester wore this Hawaiian ensemble at the Errington Farmers Market July 27 to help her mom Ruby promote her Aloha flavoured kale chips made with coconut, pineapple and Manuka Honey. Ruby uses local organic kale from Nanoose Edibles and makes a variety sweet and savoury flavoured chips.

These young entrepreneurs from Coquitlam who spend their summers in Qualicum Beach call themselves the Cotton Candy Kids. 11 year old Dawson Hodge (left), his 13 year old brother Robbie and his twin brother Brandon (right) were doing a booming business July 27 at the St. Mark’s Fair.

Wendy Huntbach owner of the World Parrot Refuge in Coombs and Earl Grey, one of her rescued birds are hoping people will vote for the bird sanctuary in the Shell Fuelling Change online contest. Shell Canada has put up a $25,000 grant for the charity that gets the most votes.

Great news from Robynne Shaw, General Manager of Sunrise Ridge Waterfront Resort in Parksville. The outdoor pool and hot tub are now open. The project was completed last month and also includes a fitness facility.
