Comox air show Prizes and excitement to be had Excitement is building in the region for the return of the Comox Armed Forces Day and Air Show, Saturday, August 17. Among the new acts planned for the show is the “Smoke N Thunder” jet car and a Canadian Armed Forces tactical operations demonstration by members of 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron and The Canadian Scottish Regiment. “The ‘Smoke N Thunder’ jet car uses the same engine that the Royal Canadian Navy used in its Banshee fighters from 1955-62,” said Major Dwayne Kerr, air show director. “This is an exciting act that will see the car thunder down the runway at 640 km/h as it generates 6,000 lbs of thrust, faster than many of the airplanes we will have at the show.” Spectators will also get an appreciation for the professionalism and cooperation of Canadian Armed Forces members in the tactical operations demonstration featuring Griffon helicopters and soldiers of 39 Canadian Brigade Group (CBG). “The demonstration intends to feature airmobile light infantry operations, with members of 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron from CFB Edmonton working with soldiers of The Canadian Scottish Regiment, Vancouver Island’s Reserve infantry unit,” Kerr said.

During the Armed Forces Day, members of the public will also be able to check out displays and meet members from army units including 5th (B.C.) Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, 11 Field Ambulance, 741 Communications Squadron and other units of 39 CBG. All those in attendance will be entered into a draw for a pair of WestJet tickets anywhere the airline flies up to a value of $2,000, five Harbour Air one-way tickets between Comox and Vancouver, three pairs of B.C. Lions tickets and one pair of Vancouver Canucks tickets, including accommodations (value $350). People using the B.C. Transit ‘Park and Ride’ service on August 17 will also be entered into a draw for many more prizes. Starting August 6, listeners at 97.3 The Eagle, will have a chance to win even more prizes with B.C. Transit. Cyclists who use the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition’s secure bike lock-up will also be entered into a draw. People who buy tickets at www. comoxairshow.ca will be in a draw for more prizes. Tickets are also available at all Thrifty Foods locations and the Canex store at CFB Comox. — Submitted by 19 Wing Comox
