going on and I guess wanted to hear things for themselves,” Morrison said. “I had to make sure nothing was going to happen besides what our AGM is meant for. “I needed to make sure people heard from me what is going on as I represent them as their elected chief councillor.” The AGM began at 5 p.m. and lasted nearly seven hours, Morrison said. The Gitanmaax Band held its annual general meeting July 10 to go over the previous year’s activity. The meeting happened despite the current Gitanmaax Chief Councillor, Julie Morrison and five councillors serving suspensions pending an investigation. Morrison and councillors attended the meeting, along with more than 100 Gitxsan community members. “People were interested in what is
“People are stooping pretty low to try to get me out of office.” An investigation into allegations made by Marge McRae, previous Gitanmaax chief councillor, could result in an arbitration hearing. The hearing would determine whether the embattled councillors are able to continue serving the best interests of the Gitanmaax band members and reserve, but the remaining councillors have to investigate the validity of the accusations before arbitration is deemed necessary. “None of the accusations have been found to be true,” Morrison said. “I’ve received a lot of support from
the community since being suspended. “They tell me they are concerned with the unhealthy attitudes that seem to never be satisfied even if good things are happening.” An arbitration hearing will cost the community thousands of dollars, Morrison said. “That’s money that we won’t get back,” she added. “So far this whole mess is operating from hearsay and the community shouldn’t have to pay for that.” Despite the turmoil Morrison is optimistic progress will continue to be made by the Gitanmaax band.
