Trout Hatchery Try your hand at one of the area’s favourite pastimes — fishing — or get an in-depth look into the life and behaviour of our friends in the streams and lakes. Driving southeast from Cranbrook you will find the famed Kootenay Trout Hatchery, well worth an hour or two of your time. The Kootenay Trout Hatchery went into production in 1965 and produces some 2.5 million trout fingerlings each year, stocking up to 150 lakes in the East and West Kootenay regions annually, as well as several others further afield. By walking through an extensive interpretative area featuring aquariums, educational models and displays you will learn about the life cycle of a trout whilst viewing small fry and fingerlings be taken through the trout rearing process by a guide or by informational displays in the hatchery. Eat in • Take Out • Delivery facility, and also offers the “Learn to Fish” program, and fishing birthday parties at the on site pond. The Kootenay Trout Hatchery hosts many educational programs for school groups and families, and has a traveling display including live fish and hatchery information that is available for special community events. People can come visit the hatchery seven days a week, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
