New city website gets modern look miami The updated City of Chilliwack website went live Tuesday with a fresh, sleek look.

The new web design for www. chilliwack.com was presented to council for information by Erik Leidekker, manager of information technology at the city.

“It’s very modern-looking with all the functionality one would expect,” he said during his report.

On the home page, a slide show of photos on a five-second loop accompanies the big issues impacting the city. Right now the grand opening of the Sardis

library on June 26 is featured in those notifications, along with Bike to Work week (May 20 to June 2) and details about flood protection in the context of the Fraser River freshet.

All the major categories have easy to navigate drop-down menus, and a tab called “I want” leads to a range of services offered from contacting the mayor’s office to getting a business licence.

Leidekker presented the city’s new mapping section online, with a range of layers and data, which he described as a “research tool”

News Fire chief submits last report to council Jennifer Feinberg The Progress

City of Chilliwack is seeking a new fire chief.

Chief Rick Ryall addressed Chilliwack council for the last time on Tuesday, as he prepares to retire in July of this year.

“I’m sure you have mixed feelings,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz gently, as Ryall approached the podium in council chambers to give the first quarter fire report.

“We do too, and are really sad to see you retire.”

“You really care about public safety in our community, and I want to say a huge, huge thank you,” she said.

Ryall filed a first-quarter fire report for the City of Chilliwack Fire Department for January to March 2013. A total of 479 calls of various kinds were logged in that three-month period, which is the lowest first quarter total in the past six years. Last year’s first quarter total was 552 calls.

Sports Provincial promise Seven Chilliwack athletes are going to high school provincials after solid showings at the Fraser Valley Track and Field Championships.

Chilliwack secondary school sends two, Caitlin LeBlanc and Levi Halfpenny.

At Valleys, held May 13-16 at Abbotsford’s Rotar y Stadium, LeBlanc punched her provincial ticket with a sixth place finish in the girls’ 14-16 1500 metre steeplechase.

Halfpenny qualified with an eighth place finish in the boys’ 14-18 200m dash, clocking a time of 23.46 seconds.

GW Graham’s Ryan Higuchi will compete in two events, the long and triple jump.

Higuchi won gold at Valleys in triple jump, leaping 12.80m.

He was third in the long jump with a distance of 5.92m

Sardis secondar y school’s Ashley Heisler will compete in three provincial events.

Individually, she will be a contender in the girls’ 14-18 400 and 800m races.

At Valleys, she was fourth in the 800m at two minutes and 29.16s.

She was seventh in the 400m at one minute and 3.52s. Heisler will be joined by Jenn Wiebe, Michaela England and Caitlin Geary, running the 4x100 relay.

Provincials, which have traditionally been held at Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium, will this year be held at Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park.

The two-day meet, which features thousands of competitors, will be held May 31 and June 1.

Mayhem battle back

The Chilliwack Mayhem, a squirt U-12 girls rep A softball team, finished second at last weekend’s Softball City Championships.

The Mayhem performed dismally in the roundrobin stage, going 1-4 with five runs for and 42 against.

They entered the playoffs seeded sixth out of eight, facing the third seed Victoria Devils in the opener.

Down 6-0 in the fourth inning the Mayhem stormed back, with Kennedy Galley’s second homerun of the game giving them a 7-6 extra-innings win.

Joe Wiens pitched seven innings in a 4-3 semi-final win over the Ridge Meadows Pride, striking out nine.

Chilliwack lost 8-2 to a stacked Surrey Storm squad in the final.
