Friday, May 10, 2013 NewsLeader A13 Hi! My name is Nathaniel and I deliver newspapers for the New Westminster NewsLeader. I have been delivering newspapers for about two years and counting. I find being a carrier is a good pastime and I enjoy it. I try my best to provide customers with newspapers on time and in good condition, even during bad weather. I have received many thank-you gifts and tips from customers and neighbors because I provide a good newspaper delivery for them. I chose to be a carrier because I needed the money to buy luxuries for myself, but mainly I needed a job to pay for my monthly cell phone bill. Being a carrier will also help me in getting future jobs because it counts as work experience. Overall, I like being a newspaper delivery person and I look forward to continuing my services.

All-candidates Jane’s Walk ‘unique’ ⫸

continued from FRONT PAGE

The candidates were accompanied last Saturday afternoon by about 50 walkers. “It was a good format, it went so well,,” said Wilson of the walk organized by New Westminster Environmental Partners, NEXT New West and Tenth to the Fraser. “They got to see some of the aspects of New Westminster from Sapperton to Downtown, you get to look at the bridges and see the traffic and then walking along there you get to chat with people.” “That was a unique one, good for this year. Next year maybe something else will be happening that we’ll be able to piggyback on.” She said one of the more popular ones was a walk on Queensborough’s South Dyke Trail with Les Gunderson. “People were just raving about his stories. He’s a great person to go out for a walk with,” said Wilson. She would have been thrilled to have had six walks but was ecstatic to have 10. “It has to be repeated, it just has to,” said Wilson. “How can we not be there? They (the walks) were all over the world.”

Board opts for geographical name ⫸

continued from FRONT PAGE

Earlier this year, trustees rejected a committee recommendation to retain the name of the former B.C. Premier (1889-1892) for the middle school. Cook said the board felt by going with a geographical name it would be consistent with the names of the district’s two other middle schools, Glenbrook and Queensborough. Cook said the district will be entertaining suggestions and it’s likely the topic will be on the agenda of the next board meeting.

MARIO BARTEL/NEWSLEADER FILE

Mary Wilson organized New Westminster’s first Jane’s Walks, where residents showed off hidden features of their neighbourhood, like this dead-end lane in the West End near Wilson’s home that often hosts lane parties and spirited games of pick-up basketball.
