Investors sought for filmmaker’s labour of love

Film is based on adaptation of progressive rocker Keith Emerson’s autobiography

Kelowna filmmaker Jason Woodford is raising funds for his documentary “Emerson: Pictures of an Exhibitionist.” The film is an adaptation of progressive rock legend Keith Emerson’s auto-biography of the same name. Emerson was one of the key figures of progressive rock from the late 1960s. He first started out with his own band, The Nice, and then reached super-stardom in the ’70s as a member of Emerson Lake and Palmer. Referenced in popular culture over the decades, the group was just as famously temperamental. The trio broke up officially in 1978, but have had a number of reunions

in the years since, most recently headlining the High Voltage Festival in London, England. in 2010 Woodford got involved in the adaptation documentary project after discovering his dad had gone to school with Emerson. After reading Emerson’s book, Woodford became convinced Emerson’s life story had enough merit to warrant a feature length movie. “It was originally going to be a narrative feature,” Woodford said. “But after interviewing some of the characters from the book it became obvious that there was enough material to turn this more into a documentary, with a sly sense of humour.”

After various stints volunteering with local film groups, and more experience with the film industry since his move from the UK in 2002, Woodford pitched the project to Emerson by showing him one of his short films shot Kelowna. Kelowna has also become one of the film’s shooting locations, as Emerson came up to the Okanagan to help Woodford with his fundraising efforts. They shot non-profits and they shot some linking sequences back in 2009. “It is definitely a labour of love,” said Woodford. “We first started shooting interviews in 2007 and have been working on it as and when we can ever since. “With over 80 hours of footage in the can, we are

now looking at the final few interviews and this is where our last push for funds is coming in. “Harry Shearer (of This is Spinal Tap and The Simpsons) has also shown interest in the project and is willing to provide us with some voice over support. If we can raise our fundraising target, we will have the film finished by the end of this year.” Emerson himself is on board with the film as executive producer and will be writing some new material for the film, however, he has taken a back seat in so far as the direction of the film. “As far as Keith is concerned, we have to do all the work to make this entertaining,” joked Woodford. “And this has been a very independent film from the very beginning.

We pitched the idea, he has given us the rights to his story, but all funds raised have either been personal or raised through social media.” For more information about the fundraising efforts, check out the website www.progrockdoc. com.

The B.C. Orchard Industry Museum in Kelowna has a live bee hive to show visitors the inner workings of bees and how a hive is constructed and maintained. Over the winter, the bee hive has been fairly quiet. The queen has been hiding in the middle, laying only a few eggs to keep the population at a minimum. A few worker bees lazily roam around the hive, doing a bit of housekeeping and a few hive repairs. But now, with the arrival of warm weather, the hive is about to spring into action. The beekeeper, Vic from Bees Inc., has checked on his little pollinators and brought a new
