ORGANIZERS CANCEL KIBT DUE TO LACK OF TEAMS Kamloops International Baseball Society (KIBS) members have cancelled the 2013 Kamloops International Baseball Tournament. “Without an eight-team draw, we cannot run the tourna-

ment successfully and, unfortunately, despite major efforts, we have been unable to secure enough teams to make up an eight-team draw,” a KIBS press release said. “We will endeavour to secure eight teams for a 2014 tour-

nament. Our annual general meeting will be held on Sept. 30 at the North Shore Community Centre (730 Cottonwood Ave.) in the Willow Room at 7 p.m. and we invite any interested parties to attend.”

The Kamloops Rugby Club Raiders are provincial champions. Kamloops downed the Nanaimo Hornets 34-10 in Vancouver on Saturday, May 4, claiming the B.C. Rugby Union Big Kahuna Women’s Division One championship and the Karen Moore Cup. “We’ve had some great seasons and been in the final a few times now, but this is the first time that we’ve finally won the title,” Kamloops captain Kelsey Winter said. “It’s just so great for our club to have an undefeated season. “Nanaimo was a strong team and that was a great battle.” Kamloops, which posted a perfect 8-0 record en route to the title, exploded out of the gate and earned a commanding 24-0 lead by halftime.

Nanaimo responded with a valiant effort in the second half. Kalea Nokleby and Danielle Plysiuk scored two tries apiece for Kamloops in the championship game, with Erin Connelly-Reed adding a single. Jess Oldenburger added one penalty kick and three conversions. Angela Buick had a strong game for the Hornets, scoring a pair of tries. “We brought champagne and some former Kamloops players who were there gave us some more,” said Connelly-Reed, noting the party continued at The Commodore on Saturday night. “Everybody who was there definitely took a nice big drink out of the Cup.” — with files from BCRU
