After an up and down season, the Vernon Under 14 Venom girls played their best volleyball when it mattered most, winning the Volleyball B.C. club championships last weekend in Abbotsford. Led by coaches Renee Cooke and Tim Proctor, the girls entered the 10-team tournament with high hopes and finished by sweeping the Focus Adrenaline 2-0 (25-22, 25-23) in Sunday’s final at the Tradex. Sunterra Sista’s had everything working wonders Thursday night in a 4-1 North Okanagan Women’s Soccer Association Division 2 victory over Capri Insurance at Marshall Field #2. Central midfielder Amanda Gaythorpe was awesome as she made plays to keep the ball moving up field, while Jen Currie and Kim Sylvester offered lots of speed and threat on the wings. Capri took an early lead on a quick surprising penalty kick from outside the 18 that sailed top corner past keeper Susan August. Andrea Zubot equalized with a high corker and Sista’s went ahead when Currie buried a low blast after a strong run up the flank. Both Tania Wirachowsky and Becky Birbilis, after switching from defence to striker for a stretch, rounded out the scoring. Carmen Kinniburgh, Miranda Dalhuisen and Sam Skeene showed great versatility, while Red Robin Player of the Match Sarah Ehman also sparkled while taking turns on the back and front lines. In other Division 2 play, the Green Rockets got a hat trick from Shauna Hagen as they stopped Centerline Attack 4-0 at Marshall #4. Lindsay Smith also scored for the Rockets, who clicked well as a team, getting gutsy run-till-ya-drop efforts from Kaitlyn Cameron, Casi Stanley and Hagen. Centerline Attack played hard the whole game as Tammy L’Heureux put her Crossfit training to good use and was unstoppable on the defensive line. Monika Jatel – despite recently returning after years away from the game – made some lovely runs and stellar passes, while smiling Natalie Lussin hustled and made some intelligent plays.

brushed back the LVC Marloes of Vancouver 2-1 (21-25, 25-19, 15-13) in the semifinals after grounding the North Shore Stars 2-0 (25-14, 25-19) in the quarters. Vernon placed second in their Division 4 Tier 1 pool after defeating the Campbell River Crush 2-0 (257, 25-21), icing Power West of West Vancouver 2-0 (25-4, 25-23) and falling 25-21, 26-24 to Focus Adrenaline. Shay Peterson was voted Most Inspirational Player by her teammates, while the Venom were also one of the winners in the Banner Contest. The coaches and players gave special props to hard-working manager Cathy Scott.
Rookie Terry Lowe made a five-star debut as Vernon Kal Tire grounded the Summerland Rockets 4-1 in Okanagan Men’s 50+ Soccer League play Thursday night in Lake Country. Lowe scored the Tiremen’s third goal and made several nifty turns and passes up front as he made a smooth transition to 50s after a decade with the 45+ league Camels. Lowe was chosen the Burger King Man of the Match at Reiswig Park. Denis Chabot, Kevin Mitchell, with the winner on a 10-yard toe-poke corker, and Jenne Huberts also scored for the Tiremen (3-1), who got clutch goalkeeping from Roger Irving and masterful defence from Rob Parkin. Ernie Blumke opened the scoring for Summerland with a gorgeous strike top shelf from a tough angle.
King named to student squad
Vernon’s Savannah King is one of 38 studentathletes who will represent Canada in swimming at the Summer Universiade, July 6-17, in Kazan, Russia. King, a former Vernon Kokanee Swim Club member, is the reigning two-time CIS female swimmer of the year from the UBC Thunderbirds. She is also a two-time Olympian, competing at the 2008 Summer Games in China, and again last summer in London.
Locke lights up Devils
Melissa Locke cranked four hits as the White House Mortgage Gators doubled Dave’s Mobile Mechanic Devils 12-6 in Vernon Women’s SloPitch League action Wednesday night at Kin Park. Taryn Robertson (3-for-3, two RBI) and Jenn Thatcher (3-for-3, 1 RBI) also had hot bats for the Gators. Keona Joe went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and Jennifer Doyle hit a timely triple for three RBI to secure the win. Lumby’s Ted Luszcz Bulldozing Dozers bowed 24-21 to the Ice Cold Pitches in the other Wednesday game. Wendy Sherman was a force at the plate, going 4-for-5 with four ribbies and a triple, while Tara Young also hit 4-for-5 with three RBI and a double. Vanessa Bostock and Sherry Kineshanko were both 3-for-5, with Bostock smacking a double and Kineshanko hitting a pair of doubles for two RBI.
Angels fall in Enderby
Enderby brushed back the visiting Vernon Legion #25 Angels 13-9 in Under 19 girls fastball action Thursday night at Riverside Park. The Angels pushed across two runs in the first inning with Dayna Hanley ripping an RBI-single to centre field. Allie Crandlemire and Rhianne Busslinger scored, while Enderby answered with five runs. In the third, Allie Crandlemire smashed a triple to right field, while Busslinger and Lexie Edward hit run-scoring singles as Vernon got runs from Allie Crandlemire, Morgan Vanderzwan, Busslinger, Hanley and Keara Crandlemire. Allie Crandlemire and Shelby Munk both stroked RBI-singles to score Lexie Edwards and Hanley in the fourth. The Angels’ pitching was shared by Dallyce Edwards and Munk with Hanley catching. Vernon Army Navy Airforce Spitfires lost 15-6 to Penticton and bowed 9-8 to the West Kelowna Warriors in Bantam girls play. Sydnee Hughes and Bailey Wiliamson both went 4-for-4 versus Penticton. Sarah Jones took the loss. Shayle Routley and Landrey Bickel each went 3-for-3 against the Warriors, while Miranda Blatney was 2-for-3 with a double. Ali Roine and Alabama Chevrier each went 2-for-2. Routley suffered the loss.
