facts...

Harrison History:

Interesting facts about Harrison Hot Springs:

• When gold was first discovered on the Fraser in 1858, there was an explosion of activity with miners from around the world racing to B.C. to find their fortunes.

• Harrison Hot Springs is a provincial and national winner of the prestigious Communities in Bloom competition.

• As there were no roads into the interior, the first, and only route to the gold fields was by sternwheeler up the Fraser and Harrison Rivers, up Harrison Lake to the newly established town of Port Douglas. Disembarking there, miners faced a long and arduous journey over 162 km (100 miles) of rough tracks and more lakes to Lillooet. • When the Caribou road was built in 1863 through the Fraser Canyon to Barkerville, this difficult water route was eventually abandoned. Although the gold rush faded, Harrison Hot Springs continues to flourish!

• Our local sturgeon can grow over 14 feet in length, and weigh in excess of 1,500 pounds. • Harrison Lake is 60 km long and 275 meters in depth in some areas. It is sparsely populated and boaters are urged to stay tuned to VHF channel 68. • Our hot springs can be enjoyed year-round by visiting the indoor public pool or Harrison Hot Springs Resort, where the pools are sourced by the two hot springs at the south end of the lake. • The Potash spring has a temperature of 40˚C (120˚F) and the Sulphur spring is 65˚C (150˚F). View the source by walking along the west side of the lake. • Harrison Hot Springs is a mecca for musicians and artists, who flock to the area each year for the Harrison Festival of the Arts.

Welcome to our gem of a Village; home of the famous hot springs and the natural hot spot for adventure!

Harrison Hot Springs is “live and play” central for active, healthy people; which is only natural since the hot springs have long been revered for their healing properties. From fun times splashing in the lake and quiet times gathered on the beach, to chasing each other down the slopes of majestic snow-covered Hemlock Valley Resort. Here life’s a beach and a lot more, all revolving around the sparkling waters of the region’s largest lake, home to world class fishing and amazing sporting and recreational pursuits. You’ll also love our rich history and heritage, as Harrison plays host to vibrant year-round events celebrating the arts, culture and diversity.

fun on the

water... Found at the southern end of the 60 km long, glacier-fed Harrison Lake, the Village is a water-lover’s paradise.

Swimming Jump in for a refreshing dip in our glacier-fed lake or the warmer Harrison lagoon and Hicks Lake in Sasquatch Provincial Park. Paddling For a relatively safe adventure, canoe the Miami River through the Village or head to Hicks Lake. The Harrison River is an incredible outdoor wilderness trip that takes you past stunning scenery. While Harrison Lake can also be paddled, it can be extremely treacherous with high winds and large waves, and should only be attempted by experienced paddlers. Boating As the longest lake in southwestern B.C. there is plenty to explore by boat, including coves and beaches, beautiful waterfalls, two islands and the connected Harrison River. With a public boat launch, complete with restroom and sanistation, several marinas and a large public dock; boating here is a breeze.

more fun on the

Fishing paradise Harrison Hot Springs is truly a sport fishermen’s paradise! Located in the heart of the Fraser Valley Harrison Lake drains into the Harrison Rver where 18 kilometers downstream it connects to the mighty Fraser river. It is a year-round fishing location with steelhead, trout, salmon and sturgeon all available

at different times of the year. The Harrison River sees all 5 species of Pacific salmon each year and with some of the healthiest returns in the province is the first officially designated Salmon Stronghold in Canada. The sturgeon population is stable and actually showed a slight increase in 2013, largely due to the positive

water... effects of a catch and release only fishery that started back in 1994. Sturgeon can live up to 200 years and can reach lengths of over 14 feet making them one of the most unique sport fish in the world today. These fresh water dinosaurs are a fantastic challenge for thrill seeking anglers often jumping several times and taking long,

reel screaming runs, before tiring for a quick photo session and healthy release. Another gem of the Fraser Valley is the World class trout fishing in the area. Harrison River has been a favourite among fly-fishers for years providing some of the best Cutthroat Trout found anywhere in the lower mainland.

Harrison Lake Harrison Lake is much longer than it appears when you look at it from Harrison Hot Springs, at 60 kilometers long it covers over 250 square kilometers. While it is now a freshwater lake thousands of years ago it was not a lake at all, but an arm of the sea. It varies in depth from just a few feet to a maximum depth of 279 m. (916 ft.).

It supports a rich bio-diversity of both seasonal and permanent animal species including: Cutthroat Twrout, Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Pink, Chum, Coho, Sockeye, and Chinook Salmon, Sturgeon, Harbor Seals, Canadian Geese, Herons, and too many different types of water fowl to list. While the Lillooet River is the

main waterway flowing into the lake, the lake also receives a constant supply of cold clear water from Mount Breckenridge glacier. So the lake can be cold particularly in winter although in August it offers a refreshing swim. As well, storms can make the lake a dangerous place to be, so exercise caution and common sense when boating or paddling.

The view from the lakefront is dominated Breckenridge Glacier in the distance and by Echo Island, so called because there is a sensational echo on its western flank. The south end of the lake is very shallow, almost out to the island. Beyond that, the depth drops off to more than 900 feet.

fun for nature

lovers...

Harrison Hot Springs’ ecosystem is diverse and abundant. Discover the ‘wild’ side of Harrison with a self-guided or group tour

Deep in the heart of “Sasquatch Country” you will find North America’s largest gathering of bald eagles. Starting in October the raptors are drawn to the area by the millions of spawning salmon that travel up the Fraser River to tributaries such as the Harrison River. Their numbers peak in November and December. In December of 2010 7,362 bald eagles were counted in a small section of this area. Over 10,000 were estimated to be in the normal Festival count area from Harrison Bay northward along the Harrison River to the Chehalis Flats. This incredible world record aggregation of a large predator is an annual event. The estuary is also home to incredible wildlife such as trumpeter swans, ducks, seal, bear, coyote, deer and the great white sturgeon. To celebrate this incredible event the monthly long Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival kicks off the third weekend in November. The Bald Eagle Festival weekend in November matches the build-up which peaks in December and wanes, as the salmon carcasses are eaten out, through January and February. What really drives the eagles to our area is the freezing up of the northern rivers – the eagles can’t get at the dead salmon under the ice. Southward the eagles come by the thousands and our incredibly productive Chehalis – Harrison River complex provides food for thousands of eagles, usually for months. Other adult eagles return to be closer to their breeding territories in southern BC and Washington State. Over 370 pairs of eagles now nest in the lower Fraser Valley. Eco tours Harrison Eco Tours offers both jet boat tours and guided kayaking on the Harrison River. Shoreline Tours will show you why Harrison Lake is so amazing. Cascade Adventures offers hikes into the back country in the eastern wilderness of Harrison Lake. Bird watching Harrison Lake is a major resting area on the north-south migration of many bird species. In the fall, Harrison River is also home to one of the largest congregations of Bald Eagles in North America. Bring your binoculars and start counting.

The Harrison River is one of the most pristine and productive Rivers in BC, with all 5 species of Pacific Salmon, it brings in thousands of Bald Eagles every fall. Tony Nootebos – Angling Guide

Quest for the Sasquatch Harrison Hot Springs has been a hot-bed of Sasquatch sightings for centuries. Sts’ailes, a local First Nation band uses the Sasquatch as its symbol and believe it to be a spiritual being. With local Sasquatch investigators Bill Miller and Thomas Steenberg providing talks and guidance, maybe it’s time to look for yourself. See Tourism Harrison’s event calendar for information on the upcoming Sasquatch Days, p20.

Salmon & Weaver Creek For a truly amazing sight, visit Weaver Creek spawning channel in October, in Harrison Mills. You will be treated to the beauty of red and green salmon spawning by the thousands. Waterfalls The mountains around Harrison provide spectacular waterfalls. Rainbow Falls — a truly remarkable gem hidden at the base of Slocan Mountain, accessible by a 20-minute boat ride. Bridal Veil Falls, the sixth largest in Canada, is a short 20-minute drive from Harrison.

If you’re the type to be inspired by nature, welcome to paradise. Every hill and valley, every trail and riverside, is waiting to be discovered here. But there are a few things you should know before heading into the great outdoors. The Harrison Hikers have been meeting weekly for the past 20 years. Each week, they set out on various levels of hikes, from easy walks along dike systems to advanced treks into the woods. If you go, here are a few words from those wise walkers. • Never hike alone. • Travel in groups of at least four. • Hike at the speed of the slowest member of the group. • Stay on the trail. • Resist the temptation to collect trees, plants or flowers. • Respect wildlife. • Never approach or feed bears or other wild animals. • Always pack out what you take in. Don’t bury your trash. • Keep pets on leash at all times. • Tell someone where you are going and when you will return. • Carry a cell phone or VHF radio to communicate, if possible.

BEAR SAFETY: Most bears will leave if they are aware of a group’s presence so make some noise. Stay in the open as much as possible. Keep children close at hand on trails. If you do meet a bear, don’t run and do keep calm. Make a wide detour and leave the animal a way to escape. To find out more about Harrison Hikers and its upcoming hikes, check in with the Visitor Centre.

sasquatch

Described as a bi-pedal mammal of exceptional size (sometimes reaching 14’) with great strength and reddish hair covering its entire body, the Sasquatch is legendary in Harrison Hot Springs with many regional sightings. The word Sasquatch is thought to be a mispronunciation of the Sts’ailes First Nations word ‘Sasq’ets’, meaning ‘hairy man’. For centuries, the Sasquatch has occupied a unique niche in the oral traditions of the First Nations communities of Harrison Lake and Harrison River. The Sts’ailes believe the Sasquatch is a spiritual being that can vanish into the spirit realm at will, which may explain why the elusive being is so difficult to track down. The home of the Harrison

Sasquatch and location of some sightings are the caves of Mystery Valley on the West Side of Harrison Lake. Local lore says the Sasquatch hold a reunion every four years, beginning on the night of the full moon in July. For four nights in succession the Sasquatch meet and signal fires are kept burning. The last year fires were seen burning was 1940, however reported sightings in the area have been as recent as 2009. Harrison Hot Springs is not only home to the Sasquatch

but also to Sasquatch Days, a great weekend celebration. This annual event brings the local Sts’ailes First Nation band to Harrison for a weekend of Canoe races, salmon barbeque and Sasquatch story telling. Harrison has a long history of passionate Sasquatch investigators including the

legendary Mr. Sasquatch, John Green. Our current Sasquatch investigators, Bill Miller and Thomas Steenburg, have been combing the local mountains in search of the elusive being and are happy to take you along. Visit their website www.sasquatchcountryadventures.com for more info.

The history of the Harrison Hot Springs region stretches back for thousands of years with our local First Nation people. Harrison Hot

Springs was revered as the “healing place” by the local First Nation long before they were “discovered” by Europeans in the 1800’s.

During the 1850s Gold Rush, Harrison Lake was the intitial route most prospectors took to the gold fields, taking a paddlewheeler from New Westminster they would follow the Fraser, then head up the Harrison River and Harrison Lake to Port Douglas. From Port Douglas to Lillooet, a mixed land and water route was built named the Douglas Road, aka the Lillooet Trail, Harrison Trail or Lakes Route. During its rowdy heyday, Port Douglas had thousands of residents. Many of the BC mainland’s first companies had their start here, including the famous B.X. Express and other major freighting companies. These companies relocated to the Fraser Canyon with the completion of the Cariboo Wagon Road in the mid-1860s. Settlers are said to have ‘discovered’ the hot springs in 1858 while enroute to the gold fields. Their boat capsized, expecting to meet their doom in the frigid waters, they instead discovered that the lake at that spot was not freezing... but rather warm. Local Indians called the Hot Springs Kwals, meaning boiling water. The hot springs were revered as a “healing place” by natives of the Coast Salish people, who travelled by canoe to benefit from their waters. To learn more about the fascinating history of our region visit our local museums and historic sites.

services

When in the Village of Harrison Hot Springs, make sure your first stop is the Visitor Information Centre, located on Hot Springs Road, on your way to the beach. The friendly and knowledgeable staff can provide current

community information, brochures, maps, internet, public washrooms and a small selection of souvenirs. The Village of Harrison Hot Springs has been designated by the Province of B.C. as a Resort Municipality. Due to the
