The Gardens in Qualicum Beach thanked its many volunteers with a special tea on April 18 that included a skit of The Wizard of Oz performed by staff members. One of the actors who took part in the performance was a regular volunteer at the facility. Sophie played the part of Toto and her owner, Marcella Andrews said her dog is a natural when it comes to putting smiles on peoples faces. She said the two of them enjoy visiting with the residents at the facility on a regular basis. There was cake, a chocolate fountain, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a fashion show, beauty demos, shopping opportunities and so much more at the second annual What Women Want event April 19 at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. The trade fair had a wide array of booths highlighting the many services and shops available locally in the community. Some of the finest offerings from Oceanside restaurants were being savoured on April 20 when the Rotary Club of Parksville AM held its annual Taste of Oceanside at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. One of the restaurants participating was Parksville’s La Vida Vegan which served a drink called Kombucha. Owners Sheila and Oswaldo Aviles make the raw unpasteurized fermented green tea at their shop. The tea is known for its wide variety of health benefits including increased energy and improved digestion. La Vida Vegan will be closed for a few days in mid May as Sheila is expecting her first baby and the new parents will be taking time off to celebrate their bundle of joy. It was a day for the dogs and cats and birds and all sorts of pets at Bosley’s Pet Food Plus in Parksville which held a pet appreciation and adoption day on April 20. There were several rescue organizations on hand with pets looking for their forever homes. Island Moments Photography donated their services and for a donation of $5.00 pet owners received a professional portrait. There was a packed house at Nanoose Place April 21 for a presentation of SPOIL. The powerful documentary on the Great Bear Rainforest includes the amazing photography of Nanoose Bay photo journalist Paul Nicklen. He was part of a mission by the International League of Conservation Photographers and the Gitga’at first nation people of British Columbia to gather images of the illusive spirit bear and the ecosystem that it relies on before a proposed oil pipeline from the Alberta tar sands threatens to SPOIL it. The film focuses on Nicklen and his quest to photograph the rare white bear. It was produced by Nicklen’s partner Cristina Mittermeier. If you were at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre April 27 you may have thought you went through a time machine and wound up in the 1950’s. A rock n roll dance party hosted by the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association had the dance floor packed with couples in retro attire. Parksville’s Zachary Stevenson performed two energetic sets for a crowd of some of the community’s best jivers including Sue Sanderson and Ron Kyle who won first place in the dance contest.

The Scarecrow, Dorothy with Sophie as Toto, the Tin Man, the cowardly Lion, the Wizard and Glinda the good witch performed a brief skit of the Wizard of Oz April 18 at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach as a way to say thank you to their many volunteers.

Michelle Brown (left), Liz Jenkins and Lana Tryon enjoyed an evening of fashion, food, drinks and more and the second annual What Women Want event April 19 at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre.

Rotarians of all ages volunteered their time at Taste of Oceanside on April 20 including eight year old Ramsay and six year old Hamish Lock of Parksville who also took time out to sample the Mac and Cheese with Crab and Bacon from The Cedar Room at Tigh-NaMara.

Shawna Smythe of Parksville with her little dogs Bellini and Teddy strike a pose and make a donation to the various pet rescue organizations Bosley’s Pet Food Plus in Parksville was fundraising for on April 20.

Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen call Nanoose Bay home but the two are hoping SPOIL a film they played a major role in creating will bring attention to Hartley Bay home of the Great Bear Rainforest and plans by Enbridge ship oil through the region.

Sue Sanderson (left) and Judy Williamson were among the guests who donned outfits from 1950’s for a rock n roll dance party at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre April 27 featuring the music of Buddy Holly performed by Zach Stevenson.
