BAKER, Clara Alvina With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear mother, Clara Alvina Baker, (nee Hartwig) at Menno Home, on April 9, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl in 2001 & son Jim, in 2002. Clara was born in Kuroki, Saskatchewan, on 13 July 1923 to August and Emelie (Radke) Hartwig. She was the 9th child of 11 brothers and 3 sisters. She came to Abbotsford in 1943 working on pioneer Karl and Minnie Baker’s 44 acre Raspberry Farm (now the home of the University of the Fraser Valley who named their student’s residence, “Baker House” in their honour). Clara married the Baker’s eldest son, Carl, in 1944 and they spent most of their married life in Abbotsford. Clara was a Special Lady, always caring for and about others. She was a devoted volunteer at Maplewood House for over 20 years, serving at luncheons, assisting residents on outings, calling Bingo, running the Tuck Shop and doing the resident’s mending. She carried out these activities up to the age of 88 years with love and devotion. She also volunteered at M.S.A. Manor, Sherwood House and the Red Cross loan cupboard. She was a frequent visitor to people with mobility issues who were in need of a visit or a hug! She is survived by her daughters, Shirley (Mike) Hewat of Williams Lake, Betty (Larry) Seebach and Sharon (Jaime) Toscano of Abbotsford; 5 grandchildren: Debbie, Tracy, Melanie, Bryan and Michael; 4 great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Stephen, Ashley, & Matthew. Also siblings: Tillie Baker of Surrey, Clarence (Barbara) Hartwig of Central Lake, Michigan, Harold Hartwig of Williams Lake and sister-in-law Margaret Baker of Abbotsford. Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 2pm at the ABC Restaurant Banquet Room, 32080 Marshall Rd. Abbotsford. We would like to thank the Menno Home staff on West I for their loving care. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Menno Home Benevolent Society.

OBITUARIES

Alice Bauman Krahn July 17, 1925- April 10, 2013 Born Dalmeny, Saskatchewan to Alexander and Elizabeth (Quiring) Bauman. Died at the Cottage Pavilion, Abbotsford, age 87 years. Predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband Henry, and brothers Edward and Clarence. Alice was a determined and energetic person who lived life on her terms. She wanted to learn, was determined to accomplish something in life, and above all, was fiercely determined to care for her family. She finished high school at the Mennonite Educational Institute in 1945 despite having to stay at home for several years and look after her younger siblings. She obtained an undergraduate degree and trained in nursing at the University of British Columbia, putting off marriage and family until her studies were complete. Together with Henry, who grew up on a farm across the road, she received a call to serve as a missionary for the Mennonite Brethren Church. They completed theological and practical training in California and Oklahoma before serving in India at Mahbubnagar and Hyderabad between 1955-1961. Returning to North America, she supported the family by working as an acute-care nurse in Seattle, and finished her BSc in Chemistry, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Washington. When the family moved to Fresno California, she worked as Director of Care in a Long-term care facility, and as a Nurse Practitioner. In the early years after India, she financially supported and raised the family as well as supporting Henry as he completed graduate studies in history, and began his academic career. When Henry was called to be the President of the Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg MB in 1974, she retrained as a teacher. Until 1985, she taught Kindergarten in New Bothwell, MB, commuting steadfastly 45 km each way through the bitter winters in her diesel Chevy pickup. She excelled as a hostess, creating a home that was welcoming to many students and friends, as well as faculty. On Henry’s death in 1985, she moved to the family farm in Abbotsford and began a new career as raspberry farmer. Many were the employees and acquaintances who were bemused and charmed by the tiny old lady with the beret, wispy grey hair, and large purse, who was still driving tractors and bossing people about well into her eighties. Alice knew both great love and great sadness. She loved her Henry deeply and powerfully, and carried that flame until her last days. She also knew great loss. She buried two infant daughters, one in India, and one in California. Grief at Henry’s loss was still keen after nearly 30 years. She is deeply mourned by Stan Krahn, Valerie and Stewart Pierce, and Murray and Linda Krahn, as well as sisters Mathilda and Alma. She will be missed by grandchildren Matthew, James, and Andrew Pierce, and Thomas, Philippa, and Henry (Harry) Krahn. Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford.
