Okanagan Gymnastics Centre’s Trevor Stirling and Tyler Vermeulen made it to the podium at the Elite Canada trampoline and tumbling event held recently in Quebec City. Stirling and Vermeulen captured the silver medal in the men’s synchronized trampoline event. This competition is an open event with Canada’s elite athletes in each event, with no age categories or level divisions. Vermeulen also earned seventh place in the men’s tumbling event. Two other Kelowna athletes competed at the event: Samantha Smith finished in tenth in the women’s trampoline event, although after preliminary competition, she was going into finals in second place; and Luke Friesen finished eleventh in the men’s double mini event.

Kelowna Rockets head coach Ryan Huska has called Jeff Thorburn the “pulse of the team.” Now, after seven seasons as the WHL club’s athletic therapist and strength/conditioning coach, the 38-year-old Thorburn is moving on. Thorburn, who joined the Rockets for the 200607 season, is assuming the role as head athletic therapist at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna. “This is a huge loss for our organization,” said Rockets president and GM Bruce Hamilton. “Jeff has worked hand-inhand with our players and is very close to our doctors. It’s going to be very hard to replace him.” During his time with the Rockets, Thorburn established himself as not only an important part of the Rockets staff but also as a well-respected member of the Canadian hockey community. He worked at several different Hockey Canada events, including the World Junior Hockey Championship, the Subway Super Series and the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. He also trains several current and former Kelowna Rockets as well as other players at various levels of professional hockey “I have truly enjoyed my time and experiences with the Kelowna Rockets hockey club,” said Thorburn, a native of Dalhousie, New Brunswick. “It has been a tremendous group of people to work with and they have always treated me as part of the Rockets family. It certainly was a difficult decision for me to move on yet I am excited for the upcoming opportunity. I would like to sincerely thank Bruce Hamilton and all the members of the Rockets organization.” The Kelowna Rockets are now accepting resumes for the position of Certified Canadian Athletic Therapist/Strength and Conditioning Coach.
