Kayakers tear through Tamihi The Chilliwack Centre of Excellence hosted the Rich Weiss Memorial slalom races last Sunday, with paddlers taking on the Tamihi Rapids in 10 races. On the men’s K1 (kayak) side, John Allen took the open race with a time of 111.19, beating Joel Martin (116.69) and Ken Daugherty (129.49). The K1 cadet class went to Avery Wilkins and the junior class went to

Sam Fletcher, with a time of 135.00. The K1 masters race was won by David Zimmermen with a time of 123.77, edging David Johnson (129.57) and Rufus Knapp (131.10). The C1 (canoe) race went to Craig Allen with a time of 122.21. On the women’s side, Jazmyne Denhollander took the open race with a time of 117.85. Ally Moore won the open plastic

division at 317.94. The masters race went to Lisa Day with a time of 159.47. The women’s K2 race, teaming a cadet with an adult, went to Isabel Taylor and John Allen. Golden gymnasts Abbotsford’s Twisters Gymnastics Club hosted their 18th annual Gymnastics Invitational this past weekend, with several Chilliwack natives competing. More than 650 athletes, competitive and recreational, made the trip to the Fraser Valley, and Twister gymnasts hauled in 24 gold, 38 silver and 29 bronze medals. Chilliwack’s Jeremy Gaspar tackled the national open division, getting gold on the vault and silver on the floor, pommel horse, rings, high bar and all-around.

Two local girls competed in level three argo. Ella Palmer took gold on the floor, silver on the beam and bronze on the vault and all-around. Brienna Gaspar won gold on the beam and all-around, adding silver on the vault and bronze on the floor. Lexi Gaspar (level two open) won gold on the bars, silver on the vault and all-around and bronze on the beam. Leanne Hellewell (level two tyro) claimed gold on the beam and Heather Vanhouck (level two argo) earned bronze on the beam.
