“What specific learning needs and opportunities exist in the valley when it comes to farming, food production, and food security?”

“What kinds of educational programs, services and facilities would best meet local needs?”

Those questions will be addressed in community agriculture learning needs assessment (CALNA) when data is collected from March to August this year.

In a presentation to town council at the March 12 meeting, College of the Rockies employees Nigel Francis and Laura Hannant said there is a lack of relevant educational programming, “not just in Creston, but across the country.”

“There is an opportunity in the Creston Valley to capture this new market and become a destination for agricultural education,” Francis said.

The purpose of CALNA is quite specific, he said.

oswell resident Luanne Armstrong’s memoir, The Light Through the Trees: Reflections on Land and Farming (Caitlin Press), has been shortlisted for the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize, one of seven prizes presented annually to B.C. authors and publishers at the Lieutenant Governor’s BC Book Prizes Gala.

Armstrong, MFA, PhD, is the author of 14 books, and she has worked as a feminist researcher, a freelance journalist and a writing instructor. The Light Through the Trees is a deeply wise reflection on land, farming, a sense of place, connecting with nature and what it means to live on this earth.

Town approves market location, will consider possibly becoming city

Creston town council approved the permanent move of the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market to town property adjacent to the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce at the March 12 regular meeting.

Approval was recommended by town manager Lou Varela, who also proposed a funding method to ensure adequate water and electricity are available. Some grading and gravelling of the site, as well as dust control in the summer, will also be needed, she said.

Funds should come from the Community Development Program funds, which are allocated to regional areas and municipalities by the Regional District of Central Kootenay. In 2011 and 2012, the program funds were used to pay for murals painted in the downtown core.

“We now know what an important economic asset the farmers’ market is and moving it to the downtown core, where it will have more visibility, will benefit everyone, including downtown businesses,” she said.

Klassen said there are no direct benefits to the designation, but there are costs, including changing legal documents and all signage and stationery. Such a move would require approval of 50 per cent of those voting in a plebiscite, which would also have a cost, he said.

Coun. Scott Veitch asked that council consider the issue, saying it was an opportunity to decide how Creston can best market itself for development.

“This might be an important message to deliver to developers or investors,” he said. “We have to decide whether we see ourselves as a small rural community or a more dynamic place.”

•Toyota, Coun. Tanya Ducharme and engineering manager Colin Farynowski toured the new state-of-theart waste management recycling plant in Spokane last week. RCMP seeking information on vandalism suspects

Mayor follows recycling trail to Spokane

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff Creston Mayor Ron Toyota admits to being fascinated with how public systems work — how transportation systems move people around, how water gets from creek to tap, and so on.

So it is no surprise that he recently arranged a visit to a new state of the art recycling plant in Spokane.

“I’ve always wondered what happens to the bins full of recyclables that are collected by Waste Management three times a month,” he said on Tuesday. “Every once in a while I would get a complaint from someone who heard from someone else that some or all of it just gets taken to the landfill in Cranbrook. I didn’t believe it,

Earlier this year, a visit to Waste Management’s facility in Cranbrook allayed any concerns that the bins’ contents aren’t really being recycled. Paper, plastic, glass and metal are collected from around the East Kootenay, then compacted in Cranbrook before heading south to the company’s recycling plant in Washington.

•A man reported losing his wallet, but had no idea where he lost it.

•A white Mig welder valued at $800 was stolen in a break-in to a Stace Road resident’s garage.

•Both cars were damaged, but no injuries resulted when a Ford turned onto Highway 3 in the 3000 block and collided with an oncoming Plymouth.

•Police located and warned a person in a vehicle who had aimed a laser light into another vehicle in the 1000 block of Canyon Street.

Management, one of North America’s largest recycling companies, the SMaRT plant is built to handle about 6,000 tons a month, processing about 11 pounds per second.

“The SMaRT plant opens the bales, fluffs them and everything goes into the processing line where the latest technology processes and separates cardboard (different types), paper, metal, glass and plastics,” Toyota said. “These products are then baled and sent out to the different destinations. Glass goes to Seattle.

Metal products are sent to U.S. plants.

Plastics can go to China or other source locations.”

Materials are sorted by a variety of means. Air currents float off cardboard and paper, plastic bags are sucked into

vacuum tubes and hand sorting separates other items into separate streams.

Volume is key for recycling sorting operations, the Creston group learned.

The contents of 42 green Waste Management bins in the Creston Valley eventually arrive at the SMaRT plant, along with recyclables from southern B.C., Idaho and Washington. Alberta recyclables are also being considered for the Spokane facility.

“Another most interesting discussion was Agilyx,” Toyota added, “a company based in Beaverton, Ore., with an operating plant in Tigard, Ore. WM has partnered with this company and its purpose is to extract pure crude oil from waste plastics that are already in our landfill sites. It is an amazing vision and process.”

“With what little we have left.” It was a phrase I heard twice on Monday morning, and one that said volumes about our community.

Two speakers used the phrase at a cross-cultural workshop presented by the Lower Kootenay Band. I was one of about two dozen invitees who were engrossed for over three hours as we learned about Ktunaxa history, right back to the Creation Story, culture, language and community. It was as satisfying and moving an experience as I have had in a long time.

Kudos once again to Chief Jason Louie for having enough trust in himself and the people around him to reach out to the larger community around Lower Kootenay. Along with his wife, Angie, his band council, LKB chief administrative officer Linda Berg and other residents, Louie did a masterful job of enlightening the audience.

The morning started with a brief introduction by Louie and a prayer from band Coun. Anne Jimmie. Then the floor was turned over to Joe Pierre Jr. The son of long time Lower Kootenay resident and employee Joe Pierre and Sophie Pierre, now chief commissioner of the BC Treaty Commission, Joe Jr. has been telling the Creation Story, and about how he learned it, to audiences for more than a decade. Nobody, repeat nobody, who lives in the Kootenays, should not have a chance to hear the legend.

It is part of our own history and gives us a much greater appreciation for our geography and natural history.

Angie Louie has built up a strong reputation with her health and wellness work. She spoke about the history of the Ktunaxa people before they were “discovered”, she said ironically, by the explorer David Thompson. Of note is the fact that the Ktunaxa were not a nomadic people, with archeological and anthropological evidence of their residing in this area more than 10,000 years ago. The language is a rarity in that it was not blended with or influenced by the language of other tribes.

Once white settlers moved into the region life changed dramatically for the Ktunaxa, and rarely for the better.

The Regional District of East Kootenay is also disturbed with the idea that members from Jumbo have a seat on the board and can thus influence regional land use decisions.

They passed a resolution letting the government know that they oppose the section of the letters patent, the legal function to create a municipality, giving Jumbo a seat at the Regional District of East Kootenay without residents.

Jumbo’s Council was appointed by the legislature’s strongest opponent to Jumbo Wild, Kootenay East MLA and Minister for Community, Sport and Cultural Development Bill Bennett. Finding no problems with the lack of democracy in all of this, he responded to my questions in the legislature, saying it’s about jobs (to view the exchange, go to www. michellemungall.ca).

Use foresight to make good choices To the Editor: We are all born with a sixth sense and gain foresight as we live. We don’t use it or apply it enough each day. We all have choices and use them every day.

Easter is coming soon. Does that mean an early spring? Start planting.

I can’t help thinking what Easter means. Have you asked yourself what would you have done had you been there when they crucified our Lord?

Would you have shouted out with the crowd, “Crucify him”? Would you have feared the lash and yelled out again? Just maybe, would you help carry his cross? Too afraid? Maybe you would go stand by his mother, Mary, and give her support. When you believe in the heavenly Father, that makes Jesus your heavenly brother.

You don’t have to go to church to believe, just read your Bible. Jesus lay in the ground three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. That does not make three days, for he was raised up early Sunday morning.

In Mark chapters 15 and 16, you will read that one went for spices the day before the Sabbath and one after. Two days between gives us three days. So the Bible does not lie. Writers speak and write; the reader must use his common sense.

Think of planting seeds in the spring and the harvest in the fall. Think of Halloween, a really fun night for children to remember.

Go to a door, knock and teach your child to say “Trick or treat”, as I did.

big man said, “I have a real one for you,” and hands him a baggie.

I looked in and saw seeds of all kinds, and a half-eaten apple core, chewed in someone’s mouth, full of germs. He laughed and I said, “You should be ashamed of yourself, giving children such a dirty trick, spreading germs.” He slammed the door and we threw the seeds on his veranda, and said, “You keep the seeds, apple cores, peach pits, grape seeds and germs.

Shame on you!” We didn’t go much farther around the corner toward home, and looked at all our treats and decided we should say “Sweet and treat” hereafter.

Look at what happened over the years — lethal objects put in treats to hurt children by real spoilsports using cruelty to teach one dirty tricks.

Was common sense used? Do people give parties because they lost trust in a fun night? I’d say someone had no foresight. We do have six senses.

Daylight time could make us healthier To the Editor: Just when you thought the daylight time issue was over and you have many reasons for not wanting to be in synch with the rest of the province and country, here are some interesting facts and benefits to be considered.

I am very surprised that environmentally- and conservation-minded people of the area have not picked up on these facts let alone those caring for a healthier life style. The real reason and benefits for daylight savings time

seem to have been long forgotten by Creston and area so here is a short history lesson.

Daylight time was introduced by Germany during the First World War in 1916 to conserve energy for the war movement; it was so successful that Britain followed less than a month later. When the U.S.A. entered the war in 1918 it almost immediately brought in daylight time to conserve energy. It was repealed in the U.S.A. after the end of the First World War only to be reintroduced again a month after Pearl Harbor in the Second World War, this time to stay.

Over the course of time. this energy saving action has proved to be so successful that daylight time has been extended, not once, not twice, but three times, to now cover eight months of the year.

Although I have not found any studies on the health benefits, they could only be positive as more time in the evenings would be spent on outdoor activities like playing ball, golf, any outdoor sport, fishing, cycling, gardening or sitting around a campfire,and the list goes on and on.

Even if you’re not an outdoor person there would be one hour more of daylight during your waking hours that you are not using lights.

In eight months, this adds up to 240 hours of being active rather than sitting in front of a TV, computer or even reading a book, all of which use electricity and have a negative rather than positive impact on our bodies. The winter days are short enough — why make the summer days short as well?

Perhaps instead of daylight time it should be renamed energy saving time.

Think about it, folks. It’s your money and your body. I would even go so far as to say it could have an impact on health care costs! Let’s get out and enjoy those beautiful summer evenings for an extra hour.

Survey reveals library users’ wants

First, an announcement: The library’s annual general meeting will be held on March 28 at 7 p.m. in the library meeting room. Anybody with a library card is welcome to attend and help elect new board members, hear the latest reports from the librarian and board, and mingle with some of the finest minds in Creston.

In January and February, members of the library board and staff hit the streets to ask you what you wanted to see in the library in the future. We received hundreds of responses, and while we are still sorting through the results, here is a preview of some of the things you said: First, despite all of the competition from the Internet, ebooks and all of the other modern gadgets, folks in Creston still love to sit down with a bound and printed book. I just want to say that we love them too, and I can guarantee that a big part of our budget in future years will be spent on good old-fashioned books!

Second, you want better furniture and seating areas, preferably a coffee bar, and one person suggested a waterslide. Well, I would personally love to be slipping down a waterslide sipping a latte and reading Jose Saramago but, to be realistic, we are actively exploring options for a coffee bar, and new furniture is definitely on the horizon (yes, when the time comes, we will ask you to help us choose the furniture).

You said that you want the library to be the hub of the community, and to play an active role in building a stronger, more vibrant community. We are working with a number of community

Aaron Francis organizations, including the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, Family Place, the Lower Kootenay Band, local schools and others to collaborate on programs and share our limited resources. We already provide hands-on computer training, access to free income tax assistance, a venue for local artists, opportunities for youth volunteering, documentary film screenings and much more.

In short, we are deeply invested in this community, and we will continue to explore new opportunities and keep listening to your ideas.

Lastly, many of you said that we are already perfect, and to just keep doing what we are doing, and to that, all I can say is thank you. We are grateful.

A full report of what you said and what we are going to do about it will be presented in our strategic plan 2013-

2015, expected to be completed by June.

On a different note, I am proud to announce the start of a new program at the library called the Living Books speaker series. The idea behind this series is that stories and knowledge are not only in books and websites, but also in the people around us. Just as the library provides access to books and websites, we want to provide a venue for these stories and knowledge to be shared throughout the community.

Although I am new to Creston, I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing, wonderful and colourful individuals with fascinating stories to tell.

On March 16 (already passed, I know), our first “living book”, Jim Smith — a charming, down-to-earth retired forester with a deep respect for the land — told his story. For decades, Jim photographed the natural beauty around him in order to promote a gentler, more holistic vision of forest management. Nowadays, together with his son Howard, Jim specializes in fine art nature photography. His outstanding works have been shown throughout the Kootenays and beyond.

In April, we are fortunate to have Rachel Beck, a local herbalist and College of the Rockies instructor. Rachel has an extensive background in natural medicine, and has written for a number of publications about natural health.

New golf pro’s job a family affair

As all local golfers will know by now, Randy Panton has retired as the Creston Golf Club head professional after 29 years of dedicated employment. Members wish him a relaxing, happy retirement.

Experience Phil Thomas Many applications were received to fill the position and after very careful consideration, the selection committee appointed Brian O’Keefe from Shuswap Lake Estate Golf and Country Club near Salmon Arm. Brian has been a Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association professional for the past 27 years, with the unique asset of having his family as pro shop co-workers. His wife, Janet, is a keen golfer with pro shop experience and his two sons, Karson and Kowan, presently attending college on golf scholarships, will be behind the counter during the summer months.

Brian’s golfing skill is indeed impressive.

As an outstanding junior, age 15, he won the BC Juvenile Championship at Capilano Golf Club and a year later carded his best round to date of 64 (eight under par) at Vernon Golf Club, evidence enough for his career decision.

After a year at Oral Roberts University, Brian completed his CPGA apprentice professional training at Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops. As a professional, he continued his strong play in the ’90s; his most recent

success was in 2002 at Aberdeen Hills Golf Club in Kamloops in the King of the Hill Pro Am with a seven-under-par score.

Of course, playing competitively is only a small part of the job, and Brian is well prepared in all areas of this complex position.

Golf instruction, pro shop management and merchandizing, customer service and visitor promotion are a few of the areas of expertise he has developed over the years.

In addition, his personable, friendly manner will ensure good relationships with all

his co-workers, the club executive, the course superintendent, visitors and, most importantly, members.

Brian, a family man first and foremost, lists his interests as hockey and coaching kids sports. He likes to golf socially as well as competitively.

We wish a warm welcome to the O’Keefe family, surely a great asset to our golf club and our community.

Living books at library

From page 7 More than just a living book, Chief Jason Louie is a living library of local indigenous knowledge. His fluency in the local dialect of Ktunaxa, deep knowledge of Ktunaxa stories and knowledge, and generosity and dedication to traditional ways of life make him an inspiration to the whole community. We are honoured to have him present his story at the library in June.

Lastly, I am embarrassed to include myself among this illustrious group, but I will be sharing my story with you in May. As some of you may know, music is a passion of mine, and I have spent a number of years studying various forms of music from around the world, primarily in Korea and India. My talk will focus on understanding North Indian classical music.

Last of all, an apology. In my previous column, I erroneously referred to Gordon Lawrence of New Life Church as Gordon Anderson. My sincere apologies to both Gordons.

Government committed to defibrilator access

Heart disease is a major problem in Canadian communities. That’s why our Conservative government is committed to both helping prevent the disease, and ensuring that when heart attacks occur the proper lifesaving equipment is available.

From Parliament Hill David Wilks According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, approximately 40,000 Canadians are affected by sudden cardiac arrest each year. The risk of experiencing sudden cardiac arrest is increased during intense physical activities such as hockey, and is especially prevalent in people with high blood pressure and other risk factors.

Unfortunately, the survival rate for those 40,000 people is only five per cent on average.

That’s why, in 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper pledged to place automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in hockey arenas across the country. Recreational arenas are often a hotbed of physical activity in smaller communities and they’re used for numerous events other than hockey, making them a likely location for sudden cardiac arrest victims.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation notes that survival rates for those who experience sud-

den cardiac arrest can be increased by up to 75 per cent if they’re given CPR or treated by a defibrillator within the first three minutes of a heart attack.

Recently, the prime minister followed through on this commitment by announcing our government’s partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. This partnership will help ensure that community hockey arenas across Canada are provided with defibrillators and appropriate attendant training. This initiative has the potential to save the lives of thousands of Canadians.

Through a four-year program our government will give $10 million to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The first $300,000 will be used to scout ideal arenas and locations for the defibrillators, with a special emphasis on rural communities. After these locations are found, the remaining money will be used by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and its partners to place defibrillators in arenas nationwide and train associates how to use them.

This coincides with actions being taken across the nation to increase the number of AEDs in high traffic public locations. It also coincides with action being taken by our government to combat heart disease: $5.2 million annually to the cardiovascular disease program, increased research investments, and increased investments in promoting healthy, active lifestyles.

Leading an active lifestyle, maintaining a healthy diet and quitting smoking are three of the biggest ways one can cut back on their risk of heart disease. However, when an emergency occurs it is important that there is access to the proper life-saving equipment. That’s why our government is committed to ensuring community arenas have access to AEDs. Since coming to Creston, I have watched this community continuously share limited resources, work together to develop needed facilities and programs, and strive for the susTerry tainability of a strong and healthy community.

Community groups, individuals and families benefit when services are co-ordinated through partnerships. Activities and programs are cost-effective and, therefore, sustainable. People’s skills are used and appreciated. Positive relationships develop and grow. Funding agencies obviously benefit, as well.

Duplication of services is expensive and gaps in services lead to more expensive problems in the future.

Efficient operations attract other resources and these are leveraged to supply even more positive benefits to a community.

The Creston Lions Club Nowak hosts breakfasts at the TAPS site and this year we are going to assist them with the Creston Valley Blossom Festival. A project that involves TAPS gentlemen working with the Lions on a woodworking task is underway. We feel proud to be able to continue to contribute to our community.

These partnerships have allowed TAPS to work towards sustainability for our valuable program. They also have benefitted the community because it values the wisdom and skills of its elders.

Plan to attend the Lions breakfast at TAPS on March 23. Have a good meal, visit with old friends and share your enthusiasm for this community.

The BC Hockey Peewee Tier 3 championship kicked off on Sunday morning at the John Bucyk Arena, with an opening ceremony that evening MCed by John Kettle.

The festivities included members of the Creston Valley Figure Skating Club, Lower Kootenay Band dancers, a parade of the Creston Chiefs and 10 other teams from B.C. and the Yukon.

The Chiefs played their second game of the series following a ceremonial puck drop by Alexis Folk, and lost 1-0 to Quesnel. As of press time, the Cheifs had lost two other games, 2-0 to Dawson Creek on Sunday morning and 5-1 to the Burnaby Winter Club on Monday night.

Carmen, by Georges Bizet, is an opera with much gaiety and many well-known arias including the famous Toreador Song. It will be shown on the big screen at Creston and District Public Library on March 30 at 7 p.m.

This Deutsche Grammmophen DVD is a Metropolitan Opera production with conductor James Levine. Mezzosoprano Agnes Baltsa performs the title role and tenor Jose Carreras is the corporal with whom she falls in love.

The story takes place in Seville around 1820 and portrays a passionate and somewhat ruthless heroine. She fascinates, you love her, and you abhor her.

Supporting roles are performed by Leona Mitchell, Samuel Ramey and Vernon Hartman.

Gail Southall and librarian Aaron Francis will do the necessary preparation and Jasmine Lothien will introduce the opera.

There is no charge for admission and everyone is welcome.

Dorothy Phyllis Douglas (nee White) passed away suddenly at her Lister, BC residence on March 8, 2013 at the age of 78 years.

Dorothy was born May 29, 1934 to Florence and George White at Lake Alma, SK and received her education at Lundbreck and Pincher Creek, AB. Dorothy married Stewart Douglas on December 7, 1951 at Lundbreck, AB. She was an active member of the Livingstone Ladies Club, 4H and the Creston Riding Club.

She was predeceased by her parents Florence and George White; brothers Don White, Ralph White, Russel White, Bill White and sister Shirley Farnholz.

Dorothy will be dearly missed by her husband of 61 years, Stewart Douglas; sons Glenn (Leona) Douglas of Victoria, BC, Lyle Douglas of Leduc, AB, Alan (Tanya) Douglas of Lundbreck, AB; daughters Linda (Wayne) Danser of Rimby, AB, Lorraine Nickel of Lethbridge, AB and Cheryl (Todd) Wigemyr of Barrier, BC; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The Memorial Funeral Service was held on Saturday March 16, 2013 at 10:00 PST at the Christ Church Anglican, Creston, BC with Rev. Robin Celi] oIÀciating.

Cremation preceded the service.

Katrina Windels passed away in the Creston Valley Hospital on March 7, 2013 at the age of 78 years.

Katrina was born to parents Justina and Peter Elias on August 24, 1934 in Aberdeen, SK. Katrina married Charles John Windels on April 30, 1961 in Waldheim, SK and together they had three children, Ron, Jerry and Joe. Katrina was a member of the local Seventh-day Adventist Church. She loved gardening, knitting for others and spending time with friends and family.

Katrina was predeceased by her brother Pete; sisters Mary, Margaret and Justina and her husband, Charles.

She will be lovingly remembered by her brothers John Elias and Jake Elias; sons Ronald (Lil), Jerry (Jeannie) and Joe; eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Ronald Gerald Toews

May 19, 1938 ~ March 7, 2013 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Ronald Toews announces his passing. He was deeply loved and will be missed. Ron had an inner strength and joy of life.

His kindness, humor and generosity was obvious to everyone. Anyone who needed help, Ron would give it. This was evident to neighbours, friends and family. A few years ago he took care of a neighbours' yard while they were gone. He did it without their knowledge. He was concerned for the other neighbours because of thistle seeds and other nuisances. He was also known for his small orchard of peaches and pears which he generously shared with all he knew.

Ron was born to Henry and Margaret Toews. Their family moved around BC to various places such as Salmo, Nelson, Arrowcreek, Vancouver and Renata (his favorite). He was very adventurous and loved outdoor life. He tended the family orchard and farm, hunted, Àshed and drove machinery. In Renata (teen years) he spent countless hours hauling fruit to Castlegar in a small boat. The fruit was very heavy and the boat motor not too sound, making deliveries long. He also owned his own logging truck. The mountains of Vancouver Island and Creston are beautiful but can be hazardous, making logging very challenging. Ron was an expert driver though; very brave and dedicated.

He had a passion for music. As a boy in Renata he found an old accordion someone left behind. He strapped it on and was hooked. He dedicated hours to learning and playing popular waltzes, polkas and schottisches.

Life was exciting, booking for dances and family gettogethers. Ron loved to share his music and really enjoyed playing with others. He played accordion with Henry Toews on Àddle or drums or the Summit Band.

Angalea remembers playing her violin with him. What a marvelous and wonderful time for all! As he got older it became harder to carry and play the accordion. This past summer was the last of his playing. We will all remember and treasure his music.

As a family, Dad took us on a variety of activities.

Especially remembered are wrestling, parachuting, car races, festivals, visiting people, trips, Àshing and camping. He supported and taught his children in driving, going to hockey and skating competitions. We had a summer house in Tye at Kootenay Lake where we would go water skiing, swimming and berry picking.

Dad loved to travel and we vacationed in Florida, Mexico, different places in BC and the States.

We all shared in family life; the joy of the births of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to heartbreaking times of sorrow with the death of his parents, siblings, one child (Patty) and his wife Ruth. He accepted his sorrow and was strong for all of us.

He met a friend and with her help he could begin to enjoy life and not be so lonely. Dad and Alice shared life together for a time. They went on trips, were strong for each other and enjoyed building their relationship.

Our family is truly grateful and thankful to her and love her dearly.

Everyone who knew Dad (Ron) will have their own memories of him.

We will all treasure and keep him in our hearts.

Last call for Kootenay Music Awards nominations

If you’ve been considering nominating a band or DJ for the Kootenay Music Awards, now is the time to do it.

All artists who live in the Kootenays are eligible to enter a song in one of the 10 award categories that recognize the range of musical talent coming out of the region.

There’s a category for everything from best DJ to best roots and blues band.

More than 70 songs have already been submitted online at kootenaymusicawards.com and KMA president Chad Hansen hopes to see many more roll in before nominations close on March 29.

“If you’re an artist yourself or even just a fan of a local band, I’d encourage you to go to the website and submit an MP3. Let people hear it; you never know what could happen,” Hansen says.

Fans can check out the music that’s been submitted so far by clicking the “nominate” tab at the top of the page, then going to “view entries.”

Hansen has listened to many of the submissions and is impressed by the variety.

“There’s some really eclectic, interesting music that’s been posted up there,” Hansen says.

After nominations close, the panel of five industry judges will shortlist their favourites for public voting. The judges include music festival producers Christine Hunter from Shambhala and Lea Belcourt from Starbelly Jam, Nelson live music venue managers Ryan Martin from Spiritbar and Paul Hinrichs from the Royal, and Kootenay Co-op Radio program manager Jay Hannley.

The Automation was named Best New Artist in the 2012 Kootenay Music Awards and has nominated a track for this year’s awards, as well. The final day to send nominations to the KMAs is March 29.

“These are great people to get your music into the ear of,” Hansen says.

So far the nomination page is dominated by Nelson-based artists. But Hansen is encouraging bands from every corner of the Kootenays to get their music in. Bands who entered last year are also welcome to enter again.

Shane Johnsen, frontman for the Automation — winner of best new band in last year’s KMAs — says he saw a surge in new listens on the band’s Soundcloud page during the public voting period.

“We had about 2,000 unique listens, which is huge boost for a band just starting out,” Johnsen says. “We recorded everything ourselves, without a producer, so we were really proud to be recognized last year.”

The Automation has submitted an early release off their next album for this year’s awards and will be playing at the awards gala event, along with last year’s best artist winner Shred Kelly, on May 10 at Spiritbar in Nelson.

PCSS grad entering competitions through VIU

NANAIMO — With the support of Vancouver Island University’s dedicated culinary arts faculty, students are sharpening their cooking and baking skills to prepare for a variety of culinary competitions that will take place over the next few months.

Brian Kremer, Adam Long, Shaun Saunders, Allegra Jimenez and Connor Berg are among the students who will be putting hundreds of collective overtime hours in, to perfect recipes and dishes they hope will lead to medal success at the different competitions.

Saunders, who was raised in Creston, feels the competitions are a great place to network and meet potential employers.

That’s why he’s planning on devoting at least 100 extra hours to prepare for the Eat Vancouver cold salon competition in May. “I’m a firm believer in the idea that the more you put in, the more you get out and our instructors encourage us to do that by also putting in extra hours,” said Saunders.

“It’s a big commitment but they’re always willing to help us out.”

Kremer, graduating this month, has already proven his cooking mettle by taking silver at the recent BC Chefs’ Association junior chapter’s 17th annual hot competition. He’s now back in the kitchen preparing for more competitions and attributes his dedication — and success — to VIU’s instructors.

“If I had gone it alone in trying to prepare for the Vancouver hot competition, I wouldn’t have done as well as I did,” says Kremer. “I started preparing a month before

and stayed for hours after class, trying to get it just right. My instructors were a huge support, also staying after class in order to give me feedback and suggestions on how I could make the dishes even better.”

Other students feel just as strongly as Kremer about the support they receive from VIU’s instructors.

“VIU’s program is great as the instruc-

tors encourage us to set high goals and then help us reach those by putting in extra time after class,” says Long, a Grade 12 student taking part in the school district’s career technical centre, which allows students to begin post-secondary trades and technical programs during their Grade 12 year.

Long is planning to compete in the Skills Canada high school competition in

April. There, he’ll be tasked with preparing a two-course meal in three hours.

“We’re given the menu and rated on how well we prepare the food, if we put our own twist on it and, of course, how good it tastes,” he said.

According to culinary instructor chef Debbie Shore, not every culinary program encourages students to compete.

“Competitions aren’t part of the curriculum, but we feel it’s really important to create these opportunities for students,” said Shore. “It’s a great way for them to hone the skills they’re learning in class such as team-building. Competitions also give students an opportunity to network with chefs from across Canada.”

One event all five students plan on entering is the Pear Excellence culinary student competition. To enter they must create and submit a one-of-a-kind recipe using pears. The winner from each region (VIU’s students compete in the B.C. region) will head to Ottawa to prepare their dish in hopes it captures the taste buds of the judges and nets them the $2,500 grand prize and the $300 bursary to the winning school.

Jimenez is already busy planning what she hopes will be the winning recipe.

“Sometimes I’m working for six hours after class to prepare for both the pear competition as well the Skills Canada competition for post-secondary students,” she said. “It sounds like a lot, but for me the competitions are an opportunity to test myself. I also appreciate having extra time with the instructors because they help me translate the ideas I have in my head into reality.”
