BREAKING NEWS ‘Offensive’ football criticism spurs city to eye new policy Faced with renewed criticism of a public arena being used for a sport that features scantily dressed female football players, city hall will embark on an effort to define what’s acceptable in taxpayer-funded facilities. Richard Peachey, an Abbotsford resident, made a presentation to council on Monday night, encouraging the city to stop the Legend Football League – formerly known as “lingerie football” – from using the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre due to its “offensive” content.
The B.C. Angels of the Lingerie Football League, now called Legends Football, played their inaugural game in Abbotsford last summer.
Coun. Henry Braun proposed a motion for a written policy to be developed, saying it would help guide staff decisions on what organizations can use public properties. Mayor Bruce Banman disagreed, stating that the city is “not the morality police.” Peachey said the contract between the LFL and Global Spectrum – an American corporation that manages the sports centre – states that the AESC will be used for “professional indoor football games.” He said the team is “not professional
in any way,” citing “skanky” uniforms, lack of proper equipment, and the fact the athletes are not paid by the league. Peachey said Global’s contract states the centre will not be used for “dangerous, noxious or offensive trade or business.” Peachey said the LFL’s use of the facility contradicts this contract. Banman asked that council proceed with extreme caution, stating that cancelling everything that could possibly be offensive is a “dangerous slope.”
