Assistant Fire Chief Dave Rivett said the rescue was difficult due to the steep, slippery slope and the fact that darkness had set in. AFRS technical rescue crews were lowered to the location using a rope system. The dog and the owner were then hauled up the embankment. Rivett said the rescue took about one hour, and Mary appeared to be in good condition.

Abbotsford firefighters came to the rescue of a dog named “Mary,” who had fallen down a steep embankment on on Sumas Mountain on Sunday afternoon. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) responded at about 4:20 p.m. to a report that Mary had fallen over a cliff on the north side of the mountain.
