On Sunday, November 25th in the afternoon, Kimberley RCMP were called to a report of a bear mauling in the area of Woods Road outside of Kimberley, B.C. Upon police attendance, a male in his 80’s and a female in her 60’s, were located suffering from injures inflicted by a bear, possibly with one or two cubs. Both persons were seriously injured and transported to Calgary Foothills Medical Centre where they are currently listed in stable condition. In speaking to the Conservation Officer Service, it was determined that the bear attack happened along a creek in thick brush where a deer kill was located. This kill site was within 5 m of the attack location. It is believed that the attack was defensive and based on evidence at the scene, it is believed it was a grizzly with at least one cub. The bear that is believed responsible for this attack escaped detection on Sunday The bear is believed to be in the Cherry Creek/Meadowbrook area and caution is urged for anyone travelling in the wooded portions of this area. The Conservation Officer Service will not be seeking out the bear because officers explained it was exhibiting normal behaviour by defending both a kill and her cubs. However, if people in the area happen to see a grizzly sow with one or two cubs in the area, they are urged to contact the Conservation Officer Service. The public is encouraged to continue to be ‘Bear Aware’ as not all bears have denned-up for the winter. Bear encounters are still very possible at this time of the year.
