2012 Home Expo How to be ‘safe and sound’ at home When it comes to home improvement, many products promise to save you time and money, but only a rare few can boast that they might actually save your life. Security film is one of those products. Nicole (not her real name) had just broken up with her boyfriend, a man known for his fiery temper. So perhaps she shouldn’t have been surprised when he showed up at her Campbell River home in a fit of rage and attempted to get inside by smashing her window with a baseball bat. He hammered at the frontdoor window, his angry yells growing louder and ever more terrifying. The glass buckled and erupted in cobwebs of splintered glass, but the window did not give way. After more than a minute of pounding, and still unable to gain access to the home, Nicole’s exboyfriend left even more enraged than he’d arrived. Several months earlier, Nicole’s mother had security film installed on the home’s windows, making them nearly impossible to smash and creating an invisible barrier against intruders. “She told me quite frankly that she believes the window film saved her daughter’s life,” says Dave Barlow, who owns Safe and Sound Window Film in Comox. “I tell people all the time about the benefits of window film, but it’s really quite something when you hear such vivid examples from your own community. The

security benefits of this film are truly amazing.” While Barlow is expected to be biased, there’s no arguing with the framed letter that sits above his desk from A.K. Massey, a former constable with the Courtenay RCMP’s Crime Prevention Unit. “Safety and Security Window Film is an excellent crime prevention tool,” it reads. “It reduces the chance of a burglar gaining access to your home via windows and also reduces the risk of injury in circumstances such as vandalism or natural disasters such as earthquakes.” Security window film has long been popular with businesses and for commercial applications, says Barlow. He’s installed the

film on more than 60 schools between Nanaimo and Campbell River, and he notes that the film he installs on Vancouver Island is the same product that protects the priceless treasures of both the Smithsonian and the Louvre. Security film is now gaining popularity in the residential market as well. One explanation is that technology has improved drastically since window film was introduced in the 1950s, so that a single inexpensive film can now offer myriad benefits in addition to security. Today’s films can block UV radiation that causes furnishings and artwork to fade, reduce energy consumption by increasing the insulating effect of windows and provide one-way visibility for additional privacy and security. “There are down sides to installing security film,” warns Barlow. “I had a customer in Fanny Bay who locked herself out her house and so decided to take an axe to the cheapest window. Her window ended up in a sorry state, but she never was able to break in!” For more information, or a free quote, call 250-339-7003 or look for Safe and Sound Window Film at the Campbell River Fall Home Expo, October 26 to 28 at the Campbell River Sportsplex.
