What a friend:
Garry Olavi Liimatta
Our beloved Garry passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, September 28, 2012, at Eagle Park Residence in Qualicum Beach, B.C. He was sixty eight years young. Born in Oulu, Finland, Garry came to Canada with his parents Helmi and Jaakko Liimatta, moving to Kyuquot, B.C., a small fishing village on Vancouver Islands wild west coast. He grew up loving the ocean and being out on it. By the age of eighteen, he had his own boat, The Anaa L. Commercial fishing was his life, and generally messing about on boats. He had also become a shipwright, having attended Burnaby Tech, and worked on many wooden boats over the years. In 1993, he and Liz Waring became reacquainted, having originally met in the mid 60’s. They lived together blissfully for twenty years, enjoying their home and property and all the creatures large and small that shared the land. When Garry planted his veggie garden, it was for all of us, including deer, rabbits, yes, even slugs. He enjoyed working on the property, building a Finnish Sauna, a large shop, a garage and rental house. Those people fortunate to have Garry in their lives, knew what a kind, gentle, generous man he was, who loved good times with his pals, of which he had many. Curling and golf were his past times and he was very proud of the hole in one he scored at Arrowsmith Golf club. Garry was predeceased by his mother and father and sister Meeri. He is survived by his children, Jack (Renatta), Marie (Mike), Patty (Mike) and Joe, and five grandchildren, Adriana and Wyatt, Liam and Sean, and Leila. Being part of a blended family, Garry also leaves behind his “Sweetie” Liz and her children Nicky (Hugh) and Tim (Jody) and grandchildren Dionne, Drew, Hannah, Matson and Nathan. Brothers Allan and Norman, and sisters Leila, Linda, Nina and Inga also survive Garry.
Garry’s family thank the staff at Eagle Park who cared for him. You were his “earth angels” and your patience and thoughtful caring was remarkable. Thank you all very much. We were so fortunate to have Garry stay with you. As his good pal Earl said: “They don’t come any better than him”. A celebration of Garry’s life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Pacific Coast Wild Salmon Society, Box 339, Sointula, B.C. V0N 3E0.
C. Dennis Goddard
October 1, 2012 Dennis, born in Vancouver, attended schools across Canada, finished with his law degree (UBC 1972) and became a well-respected senior partner in a prestigious Vancouver law firm. In 1976 Dennis married the love of his life, Milly, who shared his joy in hiking and mountaineering. Dennis’s other passions were fast cars, history, reading, golfing, cycling, and photography. In 1994 he and Milly made a major lifestyle change, moving to Valemount where he became the Village Administrator. They enjoyed 12 great years by the Rocky Mountains. They retired to Qualicum Beach where they hiked, cycled and golfed. After a year long struggle with cancer he died at too young an age. He is survived by his loving wife, Milly, Aunt Arta, cousins, and numerous friends who will miss his warmth and humour. Deckhand, driver, lawyer, administrator, community leader and faithful husband, Dennis was truly a man for all seasons. Celebration of Life, October 20 at 1:00pm at Yates Funeral Home, Parksville. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation, Palliative Care or Oceanside Hospice Society in Qualicum Beach. Details at www.yatesfuneral.ca.
BURTON, Alexander David Arthur May 5, 1924 - Sept 29, 2012 It is with great sadness we announce David passed quietly away on Sept 29 with family at his bedside, succumbing to injuries he received when struck in a crosswalk. David was born in Abernathy, Saskatchewan, but soon moved with his parents to BC and grew up farming in the Peace region. In 1943 he enlisted in the RCAF and spent the war as an armourer in fighter-bomber Wing 144, landing in Normandy the week after D-day. After the war, he tried his hand at farming before rejoining the RCAF as an airframe mechanic, later moving back to Vancouver. In 1975 he married Brynice Agnew, becoming father to Tom (Leilani), Susan (Dick), and Cathy; and later grandfather to Colin (Shirley) and Laura, great grandfather to Ian. Following the death of his beloved Brynice in 2005, David moved to Qualicum Beach and became an active member of the QB Lawn Bowling club. He especially enjoyed working in the kitchens at both the club and QB Senior’s Center. David was always active, at age 61 he completed the Vancouver Marathon, and at age 81 & 82 completed the Parksville 10km run. In 2011, David moved into the new Hustwick Place in Parksville, but remained involved in Qualicum Beach. He will be sorely missed by many friends and acquaintances in both Parksville and Qualicum. His family will miss his desire to make others happy, his zest for living, his infectious sense of humour and his love. Heartfelt thank you to QB Lawn Bowling for their tribute.
No service or flowers by request.
