We regret to announce the passing of Dorothy Muriel Cheavins, on August 21, 2012 in the Victoria General Hospital after a prolonged illness at the age of 91. Dorothy was predeceased by her infant son, Richard, and her husband Tom Cheavins. Tom and Dorothy moved to Quesnel in 1951 where Dorothy was employed by School District #28 as secretary to many District Superintendents over her lengthy career. Dorothy was active in the community. She was a dedicated member of The Royal Canadian Legion serving as the President of the Ladies’Auxiliary and was a long standing member of the Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed her last term as President of the Rebekah Assembly of B.C. which enabled her to visit many lodges throughout the province. She was a participant in the development of The Quesnel Seniors Center enjoying the socialization and challenges in making this project a success and took pride in the value it provided for the community. In her later years, Dorothy chose to share her life with her daughters and their families and spent time in both Vernon and the Victoria area. Dorothy is survived by her daughter Sandra Rysen (Rod), of Vernon, daughter Lori Heaton (Max) of Sooke, grandchildren, D’Atra Hunt (Matt), Matt Rysen (Shari), Tyler Pilling (Mikhaila), Great Grandchildren Brandon, Alexa, Aidan, Ashton Rysen and Baylee and Justin Hunt. Dorothy loved animals. She was never without her dog “Maggie” which gave her comfort and constant affection. The passing parade of wildlife was something she missed after leaving Quesnel. There will not be a public memorial service. If you wish to honor Dorothy’s memory you can do so by making a donation to the Quesnel SPCA.

1925 - 2012 It is with utmost sadness, that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Joanne “Hannchen” Pickel, on August 23, 2012, in her sleep, at the Hospice House in Vernon. Mom was born in June, 1925, in Neuses, Germany. Her first marriage was soon doomed through no fault of hers, yet she stayed home to raise 2 children, until they were ready to leave the house. In 1976, she moved to Canada to meet up with an old friend, Herb. This friendship grew into mom’s second marriage and life was finally good to her. While Herb managed certain aspects of large construction camps, such as Mica Dam, Swan Hills, Medicine Hat, etc, mom would always be with him, working in the camp commissaries. A few years after retiring to North Vancouver, Herb passed away and, in August 2000, Joanne moved to Vernon to live with her son and his family. While she was passionate about sewing, being well dressed and organized, gardening and roses, we will remember her most for her unconditional love for her family and her ever-present, infectious smile. She was our supreme source for encouragement, wisdom and inspiration while never asking for anything in return. We will miss her so much. Mom leaves behind her son Herbert Mehl, his wife Inge, who tirelessly supported her whenever the going got tough, daughter Gertraud Schultes (Germany), her sister Gerda (with children Willi (Holger) and Margit (Juergen) with son Max, and husband Georg, all from Germany), grandkids Alexander and Stephanie (Kelowna) and Christoph and Andreas (Germany), great-grandson Max, and many extended family members and friends on both sides of the Atlantic. Thank you to the wonderful staff at the Vernon Hospice House, who made her last few days with leukemia more tolerable. Following cremation, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home Tea Room, with refreshments and snacks served. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Vernon Hospice House. Cremation and Memorial arrangements were entrusted to Pleasant Valley Funeral Home.
