Mayor Teunis Westbroek doesn’t take credit for how the Town of Qualicum Beach has taken shape over the years. In fact, he’s quick to point out that it has been the leadership shown by councils, mayors and townspeople before him that have contributed to the town’s current layout and character. He does say that he — and the rest of town council, and the citizens it represents — are only the current caretakers. Future generations, he says, will look back on his and others’ time on council and judge if what they did added to that sense of place. In an interview with THE NEWS on the state of the town, heading into the busy season (children back to school, more council business ahead), Westbroek said it has been a year of celebration in Qualicum Beach — with plenty more to come. Events, such as St. Mark’s Fair marking 40 years, the 100th birthday of The Old School House arts centre building, and more, have been at the forefront this year.

that is the envy of some other Island communities. Case in point, Westbroek, as mayor, has been invited to attend a meeting in Chemainus on September 11, called a Con-
gress on Economic Development through the Arts, Culture and Tourism. He will take part in a mayors’ round table on revitalization and economic development in small towns. In a letter to Westbroek, North Cowichan mayor Jon Lefebure stated Qualicum Beach “is well known for its beauty and commercial successâ€? and asked Westbroek to give a 10 to 15 minute presentation on the town’s success to date and looking forward. “It’s a compliment,â€? Westbroek said of the invitation. Westbroek said he knows there have been plenty of changes in town in recent months, but said he feels in spite of his personal disagreement with some of the issues on the table today, they won’t change the village character of Qualicum Beach — something so many of the town’s founders and leaders worked hard to create.
