Using colourful paints, brushes and canvas, an Okanagan legend has been honoured by young artists this summer. The Ogopopogo Art Contest invited youngsters from throughout the Okanagan to submit their entries, with the only requirement that the piece be related to the Okanagan’s most recognizable symbol. “We are proud to support various community events in the beautiful Okanagan valley,” said Andy Matysiak, president and general manager of Ogopogo Environmental & Engineering Consultants Ltd., which sponsors the contest. “And we are happy to recognize the beautiful work of those who enriched the Ogopogo as a true Okanagan legendary creature.” After evaluating more than 100 pieces, the contest jury named the following North Okanagan residents as win-

ners: in the one to six age category, first place went to Kimmimela Louis from Vernon, with her sister, Kimora, taking fifth place. Second and third place, respectively, place went to Vernon residents Tomasz Ociepa and his sister, Veronica. In the ages seven to 12 category, first place went to Sophie Wiebe of Vernon, while third and fourth place, respectively, went to Vernon residents Kristen Ciurka and Micah Martens. “Ogopogo Consultants, with supporters, hope this event is a successful and rewarding experience for our children and to encourage them to learn more about our legendary Ogopogo, and thus, our community,” said Matysiak. On Saturday, first place winners will be taken with a parent on a search for Ogopogo, exploring the Squally Point area of Okanagan Lake, said Sophie Wiebe with her winning painting in the ages seven to 12 to be home to the legendary category and Andy Matysiak, president of Ogopogo Envrionmental & creature.
