Ktunaxa assembly open to public Submitted

From sweet to tart - delicious apples If you are looking to add some style as well as flavor to your yard this year, consider planting a fruit tree. A full tree will give you shade and add interest to your landscape with spring blossom and fall colour. And there is just something about going out into the yard and picking an apple, plum or even cherries off the tree and eating them fresh. It is very satisfying to know how the tree has been taken care of and where the food you are eating has come from. Many people think you cannot successfully grow fruit trees in Cranbrook and the region, because it is too cold or too dry or too something. However, there are lots of different types of fruit trees that you can grow in this area, from apples to plums, pears, cherries and even walnuts – providing you have selected the right location and are prepared to use good amendments and fertilizer when planting and can water the tree as much as it requires for the first couple of seasons. You must also make sure that your tree or trees are protected from deer. They will eat the flowers, the fruit, the leaves and even the bark, so a fence around the tree or some other suitable barrier is a must, and this barrier must go up as soon as you plant the tree. I have heard so many stories of people saying that they were going to put the fence up "tomorrow" or "next week" only to come back out the next day and see the damage the deer have done. So do yourself a favour and protect that investment by protecting your tree from the time of planting. According to surveys, apples – along with bananas – are the most popular fruit in Canada. Rightfully so! There are few fruits as versatile as apples – eat them in pie, serve them with cheese, add them to a savoury stew or make them into juice. There are numerous varieties of apples, from sugar-sweet to tart and crisp. One of the tried and true favourites is the Honeycrisp. Its sweetness and firm texture make it a great choice for eating raw and in cool and dry conditions, this apple can be stored for up to seven months. Tart flavour, red and green skin and tender white flesh make the McIntosh apples stand out. This variety produces a great amount of fruit that is well-suited for pies and cider and the unpeeled apples make a signature pink applesauce. A couple of newer varieties are Hazen and Beacon apples. Beacon is a wonderful eating apple which is juicy and has a showy bright red colour to the skin. Hazen reliably produces dark red fruit with very sweet, medium firm flesh that is wonderful for eating and makes a great cooking apple. If you cannot decide what flavour of apple would best suit your taste, there is an answer for you as well with combination apple trees. Five different varieties of apples are all grafted onto one tree – what a perfect choice for someone who wants multiple kinds of apples, but cannot plant more than one due to space restrictions. Make sure that you do your research and make sure that the tree you choose will have a pollinator, otherwise you may not get the fruit you are after. With a little bit of preparation and good planting techniques, you too can have an orchard to harvest from in a few short years. Till next time… happy gardening. Submitted by Tara

Chief Jason Louie of Lower Kootenay demonstrating a traditional dance in full regalia. Lower Kootenay will be hosting the 34th Ktunaxa Annual General Assembly Pow Wow on the evening of Wednesday July 24th. The public is invited to attend.

You might be noticing a lot of Ktunaxa pride in the Creston area between July 24-26, as the Ktunaxa Nation will be hosting their 34th Annual General Assembly in Lower Kootenay. The AGA rotates between the Ktunaxa Communities, and the last time it was held in Lower Kootenay was in 2007. The AGA is a time for Ktunaxa Citizens to connect with each other, and learn more about the programs and services available to them through the Ktunaxa Nation Council. Although the daytime meetings have a Ktunaxa focus, the pow wow on Wednesday July 24th will be open to all residents in the surrounding area. The pow wow will take

place at 7 p.m. at the Lower Kootenay Arbour, and will feature many drum groups and dancers from around the Nation. There will also be an opportunity for “inter-tribal” dances, in which nonKtunaxa guests will be invited to get up and dance as well. “This as great opportunity to connect with our neighbours who live in Ktunaxa Territory,” said Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Nation Chair. “We welcome you to come to the pow wow and learn more about Ktunaxa, and enjoy in the dancing and celebration.” For more information visit www.ktunaxa.org/ aga
