My own son (Marc) played for him and Sean often would check on him and help guide him. “He has just been so large for so many people.” Yacoboski’s son will be playing another year for the Whalers, after Hines helped

ensure he received another season of eligibility after getting sick. Hines said apart from the 2002 title, his biggest accomplishment has been getting to know his players and their families on and off the field, and helping young men finish high school and graduate.

“Not everybody is wired for university or can go on to another level in football,” he said, “but they all have the ability to focus and get their Grade 12 done.” Hines admitted it was a tough decision to step away form the game as a coach, but did not rule out a return to the game —
until he’s gone on with the next stage of his life. For now, Hines said he’s slowly making the adjustment to being away from the inner circle of football at Ballenas Secondary. He added he has great memories of his work with the program and will maintain the friendships created through football. “So many of my closest friends have been made through football,” he said. “I’m the blessed one. “I was fortunate enough to come up to coach at the high school and be a part of their inaugural season.”

Midgets prep for the playoffs PARKSVILLE — Parksville’s Midget B lacrosse team was out at the box in the Community Park for a mid-week practice, gearing up for their last league game in Nanaimo on June 20. Coach James Smith said the team will finish in fourth or fifth this year and the top eight teams make the playoffs, to be held in Peninsula this summer. The boys were clearly having fun, down on their faces doing pushups. — Steven Heywood
