Fields close, few games played League play ended Sunday with the U16 Boys Shuswap Selects realizing a long-sought goal – claiming first place in their division. The Selects travelled to Kamloops Sunday, where the fields were dry, to play the Blaze and came home with a 2-0 victory. The Salmon Arm boys worked hard, with good possession, hard tackling and a great defensive effort by all. When all the league games were completed, the final tally came down to numbers of goals for and against between Kelowna United and the Selects – and Salmon Arm was victorious. Kelowna and Salmon Arm have met three times this season, with the Selects winning two out of three games, one of them exhibition. Salmon Arm will compete in the final this coming Sunday in Penticton, with the Selects taking on the winner of Saturday’s game between Kelowna and

For possession: U13 Girls Soccer Select player Emily Williams, left, controls the ball in play versus Vernon Saturday at Shuswap Middle School field. Vernon United took the win. Vernon. The winner of that game will head to provincials in July.

Squeaker The U14 Girls Shuswap Selects were looking for redemption versus Vernon on Sunday. Shuswap started quickly, speeding

through and around Vernon. Back and forth, pass after pass, but still no score for either team. In the second half, both teams tried desperately for a goal. Vernon took possession for much of the half. They made play after play, attempting to make the scoreboard, doing

pretty much anything in effort to score, including taking out the goalie several times. One shot bounced off the post and, as the goalie turned and jumped on it, she stopped it just in time before the ball would have rolled over the line, or so she thought. The ref called it no goal, but the linesman

Little Mountain to open June 18 Mother Nature is being a little too helpful. When the fields at Little Mountain were seeded a couple of weeks ago, they were also irrigated, explains Brad Ackerman, the city’s supervisor of parks and recreation. Then, more than 41 millimeters of rain fell in the first eight days of June.

TODAY’S ANSWERS

“We will open up Little Mountain for Monday, June 18,” Ackerman says. “We’re just in the process of drying the fields down again.” He said the seed that was put down has taken well. “It will continue to grow and get established, especially if Mother Nature gives us a little bit of sun to help

that process.” Although all the city soccer fields were closed this past weekend, they have all since been re-opened. “We took the extraordinary step to close the fields down over the weekend. That did help the fields and we didn’t lose any ground,” he said, noting that other communities in the re-

gion such as Vernon and West Kelowna did the same thing. He said overuse of the fields that caused the damage at Little Mountain will be avoided. “As we move forward with getting the fields back open, we’ll manage the wear and monitor the hours so we don’t take any steps backwards.”

seemed to think differently. After the ref discussed the situation with the linesman, he called it a goal, to the goalie’s disbelief. The play hung around in the middle of the field for the rest of the game, making the final score a 1 – 0 win for Vernon.
