ASHMORE, Keith Stuart Keith passed away suddenly on April 29th 2012. He was born in Sarnia, Ontario on June 6 1947. He was predeceased by his Mom and Dad, Evelyn and Roy Ashmore. He is survived by his daughter Sarah, sister Sheila and his brother Bruce and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. There will be no funeral at his request. In lieu of flowers may we suggest donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Keith had a heart of gold and a wicked sense of humour. He will be fondly remembered by Vanessa and the staff at Brugos where he had his weekly “brew.” Betty, Merlin and Doris who were his “special” friends and finally his extended family, Craig Little and the staff at Arbutus R.V. Sales who took him into their hearts. Many thanks to the kindness and dedication of his physician, Dr. Patricia Seymour. May you fly with the Eagles, Keith. We will miss you. H.W. Wallace 251 Jubilee St. 250-701-0001 LAWSON, Edna Alois Dec. 14, 1905 – May 4, 2012 With heavy hearts we mourn the passing of our beloved Mother. She was Grandmother to 101 Grandchildren. Predeceased by her loving partner George Whitaker, daughter Ruby, son Robert, brothers Ralph, Manford, Harold and sister Alma. Survived by sons Bud (Doreen), Harold (Birdie), Bill (Irene), daughter Evelyn Dey, daughter-in-law Elma, sister-in-law Pat Rosenberger and numerous nieces and nephews. Edna arrived in the Cowichan Valley in 1933 with five children. Mom cooked at the King’s Daughter’s Hospital, and Totem Fountain Lunch. She was never idle, always busy with her many crafts. She was an avid reader. Her secret to longevity was keeping active and eating well. She was a life time member of Tops. The family would like to thank Home Care, and the staff of Cairnsmore Place. Special thanks to Dr. Dan Philippson. A Memorial Service will be held at Sands Funeral Chapel 187 Trunk Road, Duncan, BC on Friday, May 11 at 1:00 pm. BROWN, Ruby Lily (née) Wayne Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother died peacefully in her apartment at Sherwood House in Duncan, BC on April 28th. Ruby was predeceased by her husband Jim (James Dobie Brown) in 1979, her younger brother Robert Wayne in 2008, and her sister Eileen Wayne in 2011. She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Christofferson and husband Ken in Mill Bay, and Elizabeth Kerr and husband Steve in Portsoy, Scotland; two grand-daughters, Rebecca Christofferson and her husband Trevor Husband in Lake Cowichan and Amy Christofferson in Geneva.; and by one great grand-daughter, Raven Sonamara Husband. Mom was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star, holding all the offices in Camrose chapter, where she and Jimmy raised their children, as well as Esther at Grand Chapter in Alberta. She was also a life member of the Camrose UCW, her church home for over fifty years. She was a singer and music teacher as well as an office and business manager, and loved music, enjoying concerts and musical outings with her many, many friends and family from Alberta and the world who continued to visit her and share her enthusiasm for conversation, debate, and intellectual stimulation until the very last day of her life. Services will be held to remember Ruby in Camrose on May 16th at 11:00 AM at the Masonic Hall and on May 21st at 1:00 pm at St John the Baptist Anglican Church in Cobble Hill. There will also be a Memorial Tea at Sherwood House in Duncan on May 23rd at 2:00 pm. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Cowichan District Hospital, Cairnsmore Transitional Unit, VIHA, the Canadian Red Cross and most especially Sherwood House for their countless acts of kindness to Ruby and to all of us in the past four years.

MARCOTTE: Shirley Lorraine – passed away peacefully with her family by her side on May 3, 2012. Born in Vancouver BC on December 28, 1939. Predeceased by her mother Narg Green; Stepfather Floyd Green; Son David McDonald; grandsons Damion McDonald and Dustin Engel. Lovingly remembered by her family; husband Larry Marcotte; children; Douglas McDonald (Nancy), Deb McDonald, Darryl McDonald, Sharlene Hogland, and Clint Marcotte (Carla); grandchildren, Beth, Noelle, Mathew, Britt, Ian, Ryan, Chantel, Lecey, Dyson and Laura as well as great grandchildren. BRAND, Adam Gordon January 11, 1911 - May 7, 2012 Born January 11th, 1911 at Falkirk, Scotland. Passed away peacefully in his sleep at Chemainus Health Care Centre. Predeceased by his wife Eva in 1988 and brothers George, Fred, Henry and sister Monica. Survived by his son Ian Brand (Islay) of Saltair, daughter Elizabeth Martin of Kelowna, granddaughter Julie Lopez Brand (Franscico), great granddaughter Hannah, great grandson Sebastian, of Queretaro, Mexico, also by several nieces and nephews in England and Victoria. Gordon and Eva married in 1939 and raised their two children in Chemainus. He worked for M&B as General Foreman and later as Mill Manager. They moved to North Vancouver in 1964 and Gordon continued to work for M&B at head office until his retirement. Gordon enjoyed fishing, gardening, travelling, lawn bowling, tennis, camping especially on Tent Island with the family. He was also involved with the Scouts in Chemainus as leader for many years. Gordon was so happy that he got to live out his last years in Chemainus and enjoy the beautiful view from the deck of the Health Care Centre. We would like to thank the Chemainus Health Care Centre Nurses, Doctors, Staff, Activity Staff and Volunteers for their kindness, compassion and care to Gordon. Thank you also to Dr. Murray Archdeacon for taking Dad on as his patient and for his compassion and care. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Chemainus Health Care Centre if you so desire. Lorna Broughton will be held at the Cobble Hill Hall at 2 Pm Friday the 11th of May. As our Mother loved gardens and hats, it would be a wonderful gesture if you could wear a hat; a garden hat, a tractor cap. a hockey hat, a curling hat and bring one flower from your garden. We will use those flowers later in the day when we inter her ashes. Please join us for tea and memories.

OTTOSEN - Inger Marie (nee Hansen) died surrounded by family on May 3, 2012, in Duncan, BC. She was born in Ringsted, Denmark, on March 30, 1929. Inger followed love to immigrate to the Cowichan Valley in 1950 and was married to her husband Henning for 61 years. She devoted her life to raising a loving family, running a productive farm and creating one of the most stunning gardens in the Valley. Her determined and feisty nature will not be forgotten by those who loved her. Inger is survived by her husband Henning; sister Gerda in Ringsted; children Annie Fisher (Barry), Allan Ottosen (Debbie), Karen Garnett (David), Margaret Walker (John), Sonia Ottosen (Gordon), foster children Frances Nash and Peter Wallace and their families; grandchildren Heather (David), Alison (Jesse), Rita, Desmond, Timothy, Raynor, Julia, Ole and Hamish; great-granddaughter Kalena; much-loved family in Denmark; and hen and chicks in her garden. Inger is predeceased by sisters Rigmor and Mary. Thank you to the Shawnigan Lake Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service and Cowichan District Hospital for the wonderful care provided. A small private memorial will be held at a later date, near the sequoia tree Inger propagated so many years ago. April 28, 1951 - April 25, 2012 Garnet was born near the little prairie town of Fairlight, Saskachewan. He was predeceased by parents Harry and Vera Lee, brother Ivan, and father-in-law Oliver Dubois. He leaves his wife of 36 years, Kerry, daughters Rhonda (Mike) and Sandra (Dylan), sister Ila (Barry), mother-in-law Ella Dubois, and sister-in-law Kathy Mouat(Gerald). He also leaves many cousins East of the Rockies, and many friends on Salt Spring Island and in the Cowichan Valley. Garnet spent most of his working life as a mechanic for the Municipality of N. Cowichan, while raising his family in Crofton. The past 19 years were spent farming on Salt Spring Island. He was a volunteer fireman on Vancouver Island for many years, and an active member of SSI Farmers Institute and SSI Farmland Trust. His passion was the Fall Fair. Garnet was always willing to help out friends and neighbours. He was well known for his integrity, honesty, generosity, practical skills, sense of humour and “Garnet wisdom”. Thanks to so many friends and neighbours who are helping our family over these difficult months, Doctors at RJH, and Victoria Hospice and their incredible team. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a SSI Community Group of your choice or Victoria Hospice. Please join us to honour Garnet and share your stories. Celebration of Life will be held at the Farmers Institute, 351 Rainbow Rd. on June 2, at 2:00 p.m.

ERICKSON: Catherine Henrietta (Kay) Oct. 31, 1919 - May 5, 2012 Passed away peacefully at Cowichan District Hospital, May 5, 2012. Kay was born October 31, 1919 in St Benedict, Saskatchewan. She was the ninth of 11 children born to Otto & Barbara Seufert. Predeceased by nine of her brothers and sisters and husband, Andy in 1976. Survived by daughter, Denise (Donne), granddaughter, Shelley (Raymond), grandson, John (Tanya), great grandchildren, Brayden, John, Madison & Morgan. Many nieces and nephews and a large extended family. Kay was an enthusiastic volunteer in her community being recognized for her long time service by the Cowichan Valley Seniors Organization and Royal Canadian Legion for 50 years service as an auxiliary member. Kay was an avid afghan crocheter, enjoyed a good game of cards and loved to bake, and participate in Cowichan Valley Seniors and Legion events. Kay was a loving Mother and Grandmother and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Many thanks to the Doctors and Nurses of CDH, Cowichan Home Support and the Management and staff of Sherwood House for their kindness shown to Kay. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in St. Edward’s Catholic Church, 2085 Maple Bay Road, Duncan BC on Saturday May 12, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Father Alfredo Monacelli Celebrant.
