BASEBALL TEAM holds home opener today (April 7).
The Nanaimo Pirates start a new season with high hopes and high expectations. The ball players feel good about themselves, but they’ll need results on the diamond to maintain their swagger.
The Hub City Paving Pirates hold their home-opening doubleheader today (April 7) at Serauxmen Stadium against the Victoria Mariners. “It you lose a game or two quickly, all of a sudden that confidence is down and it puts you on guard and you don’t play the way you can,” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. “So a good start is key.” In other words, the B.C. Pre-
mier Baseball League’s 2011 pennant holders are winners until someone can prove otherwise. Players are already talking about trying to reel off win streaks and excitement is at a fever pitch. “It’s crazy,” said Colby Morgan, Pirates pitcher. “Everyone wants to be in that first game.” With another Island team providing the opening-day opposition, there should be a sizable crowd.
“It’s going to be good if we can get lots of fans out there, get a really good atmosphere going and basically get rolling with two wins right off the bat,” said Chris Faber, Pirates first baseman. GAME ON … Today’s game times are noon and 2:30 p.m. … Admission is $5 for the day, or $3 for a single game … A season preview was published in Thursday’s Bulletin and is still accessible online at www.nanaimobulletin.com.

Beban Park golf adds girls’ club Augusta National still won’t allow female members, but most golf courses are a little more forward-thinking. The Beban Park Golf Centre announced a partnership with the Royal Canadian Golf Association’s Future Links junior program to start a club for girls aged 7-17. The 15-event developmental program runs May 6-Aug. 26. “[The] program will not only introduce children to the game, but will make it more affordable, accessible and give kids a chance to learn the game in a high energy, fun-filled environment,” said Hélène Delisle of the Beban centre.
