Tell us about any accomplishments (in or outside of university) in your program field or discipline. I am the President of UKC-EAES, a society dedicated to uplifting and celebrating Ethiopian and Eritrean culture. I am the youngest committee member of Black Women in Law, an organisation headed by Barrister Alexandra Wilson. I was the Commercial Awareness Officer for Kent Student Law Society (as well as Editor of the Advisor). Tell us briefly about any issues on mental health or well-being that you faced. In my first year at University, I struggled. I considered taking a year out and switching universities. I even went as far as writing a personal statement for a University in London as I was worried about future career prospects. I consistently felt as if I was not good enough.

Tell us about any accomplishments (in or outside of university) in your program field or discipline. Throughout my university life I have maintained an overall first class distinction in my academics while participating in numerous society & student groups activities: as a member of the Kent Caribbean Union Committee, Afro-Diasporic Legal Network and as the Kent Union’s BAME Network Chair. Along with this I have managed to gain the opportunities of interning at the Barbados Parliament under the Clerk of Parliament as well as interning at the Barbados Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade where I have been able to cultivate my passion for International Affairs outside of the classroom

Tell us about any accomplishments (in or outside of university) in your program field or discipline. I was recently nominated by the university as exceptionally talented for the Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship 2020. Although I was not awarded the scholarship, I took up the opportunity to attend a coaching and feedback session where I was given excellent feedback. Following this, I was able to take part in a work placement at Freshfields as well as the opportunity to take part in a mentoring scheme offered to candidates as part of the scheme Tell us briefly about any issues on mental health or well-being that you faced. I have been dealing with stress related issues which have been due to the increased workload during the period of online teaching, particularly with upcoming deadlines and exams. I believe that we have not received adequate support from the university to deal with the issues that students are facing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic

DONG MALWAL Tell us about any concerns you may have on campus related to ADLN's demands which were published in the summer of 2020 I am particularly concerned with the lack of anti-oppression initiatives, training and facilitations. I also believe that the implementation of a physical BME student space would be useful to serve as a community service hub for black students. This would provide greater support for BME students as it would allow staff to gain more of an understanding of issues faced by the black community as well as providing greater support for black students

Tell us about any concerns you may have on campus related to ADLN's demands which were published in the summer of 2020 I am concerned with the campus' lack of diversity and representation of BME counsellors pursuant to demand 10. As someone who reached out to the universities support and well-being centre, I found it hard to use their resources in a way that would truly benefit me due to the lack of representation.

AMIRA YUUNI Tell us briefly about any issues on mental health or well-being that you faced. I have Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) so when I moved to England from South Africa, I struggled to get a prescription for my medication for about 2 years. I was put on a 6-month waitlist to see an ADHD specialist with the NHS before they could give me my medication in the UK. I was never able to get an appointment after the waitlist. Thus, throughout my whole second year, I struggled massively with my academics in terms of organisation, meeting deadlines, and poor academic performance in comparison to years when I’ve received my medication. I failed two modules in my second year and temporarily withdrew to re-sit the modules I failed, so as to not repeat my second year as a whole. I re-sat two exams during summer 2020. ADHD when gone un-treated (especially for someone who has been previously on medication and then suddenly off it) can be really tough to deal with as there are a lot of symptoms that come with it that aren’t commonly known such as, anxiety or depression. These are things I suffered with during my second year.

With the current fundraising I'm doing, the challenge has majorly been physical, and till this I hadn't really experienced the physical really affecting my mental well-being and it might be a bit ironic being that I'm raising money for a mental health charity. Tell us about any accomplishments (in or outside of university) in your program field or discipline. As the fundraiser for the University of Kent basketball team, my team and I raised money £560 for Kobe Bryant's charity (Mamba & Mambacita foundation) and a local charity (Books2Africa). Basketball has played an incremental role in my development and shaping the person I am today. Therefore, I have always desired to enable other Black youths, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds, to have the same opportunities that I was awarded. Furthermore, I believe that it's incredibly important to create a culture of giving and fundraising within sports. We are in a privileged position to be able to play a sport we love but many young people do not have this privilege. Through fundraising initiatives like these, I have made it my duty to help provide these opportunities for all.

This scheme aims to ensure that black students are mentored by people who are of a similar background, have the same legal interests and are therefore likely to have had similar experiences as students at Kent. I hope that this programme provides the support system and networking opportunities necessary for students to unlock their full potential.

It is in the interest of future Black students that the university provides the proper training for professors so they know how to better approach these topics in the classroom and avoid the awkward, insensitive conversations that usually happen that can be upsetting and demoralizing for the Black students in the room

Additionally, from what I have seen, there is a lack of knowledge and understanding about covert racism and unconscious bias. To deal with that, there needs to be multiple lectures for all students and staff members to understand and be aware of covert racism and unconscious bias.

Tell us about any accomplishments (in or outside of university) in your program field or discipline. I failed a module. This may not seem like an accomplishment but failing showed me that I hated doing it and that driving myself insane trying to master it was only going to bring me distress. It showed me that basing my whole life on the outcome of my academics was a joy killer. And because of that I have more clarity in what I want for my life and where I wanna go moving forward. It made me want to explore other, more creative sides of myself that had nothing to do with academics. From that I've created a YouTube channel and bookstagram, two things that now bring me joy.

The past year has been really rough and I am still struggling with how to get handle on things and understand that reaching out for help is sometimes necessary. With everything happening in the world I have really struggled with feeling overwhelmed and like I'm expected to continue to give a 100% in all aspects of my life as thought things are "normal" when that is just not the case. But my mental wellness is a work in progress and despite the many setbacks, something that I strive towards and I will always advocate for others to get the help they need to get there.
