MISSION & VALUES We are the Black Jaguar Foundation (BJF). We are driven to restore the balance between nature and mankind. We offer a tangible solution for the drastic degradation of two of our most precious ecosystems: The Amazon rainforest and the Cerrado savanna in Brazil. Our objective is simple, to plant over 1.7 billion native trees to help realize the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor. This will improve access to resources and help to preserve our planet. The impact for each of us, will be huge. But we cannot do this alone, it will take a vast combined effort. We work with global partners who share our values and with the local farmers. It’s too late to be a pessimist.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD This year we have all been affected by the global pandemic in different ways. In relation to our planet, Covid-19 has made it all the more clear that the large-scale destruction of nature and its biodiversity comes at a huge cost. Yet there is so much hope, and this year has also been a reminder of this fact. After years of extensive research, community building, and two successful planting seasons, in which over 76,000 native trees were planted, in 2020 we began to scale up. This year applying all we have learnt so far to our first million trees. From October to December, 50.000 of the first million trees were planted, with more on the way before the planting season ends! Two partnerships have been monumental milestones for us this year. The first is our partnership with Movida, Brazil’s leading car rental, and the second is our partnership with One Tree Planted. Together with these two partners, and our growing community of landowners and local partners along the corridor, we will plant one million native trees by the start of 2022. This year we welcomed several new landowners, with many more to come in 2021. Another highlight for us this year has been the incredible outpouring of support from our donors and existing sponsors, many of which renewed their partnerships this year. Let us not forget our amazing team who make it all happen. Our artists of restoration in the field inspire us each day with their passion and knowledge, and our dedicated team in São Paulo and Amsterdam ensure they’re able to do what they do best, restore nature! The power of nature is unbelievably strong. Within 3 years of planting, we see an impact for biodiversity and ecosystem services. Our grand project and people offer a positive story to the world that it is not too late to act and give nature the chance to revive itself. For us, this year has been a reminder of how connected we all are, and that together, there is more hope, and more life! We hope you’ll join us to plant many more millions of native trees!

2020 ROUND-UP CARLOS EDUARDO OLIVEIRA, BJF FIELD COORDINATOR & DIMITRIO SCHIEVENIN, BJF PROJECT COORDINATOR AT OUR SANTA FÉ NURSERY

One last time, 2020 was an unprecedented year. A year of so many challenges, the support from our community and our ability to adapt proved to be our most valuable assets.

We changed how we interacted with our community, taking our events online, producing more global and local video content, launching our first live series, and so much more. In the field we brought in safety protocols. With these in place, our team could continue to grow seedlings through the year, and reach our planting targets. In addition to the 6,997 trees planted at the start of the year, 50,000 trees were planted with Movida and One Tree Planted as part of the first million trees. An additional 30,000 trees to come before the end of the planting season in March 2021! That leaves 950,000 of these first million to be planted from October 2021-March 2022. During 2020 we saw the first outcomes of investing in our landowner engagement. Our landowner articulators, Elyakin and Phablo have been building strong relationships, resulting in 3 new landowner contracts, totalling an additional 150 hectares of land to restore. Let’s not forget the amazing team that makes it all happen and which continues to grow! As we grow we’re also developing our governance to continue to ensure transparency both in our planting and our partnerships.

2020 MILESTONES: PARTNERSHIPS

SCELTA RENEW THEIR PARTNERSHIP FOR A 6TH YEAR!

Scelta Mushrooms were our very first Diamond Friend, joining our community in 2015. Their support was a vital part of what enabled us to become an established organisation and it is now instrumental in our ability to scale-up and plant many more trees together. Scelta’s commitment to the Black Jaguar Foundation and to the preservation of our planet is evident, and we want to say a huge thank you for that!

SEACON LOGISTICS RENEWED THEIR PARTNERSHIP

In response to our Covid-19 update in May, Seacon Logistics got in touch asking how they could contribute and immediately showed their commitment by renewing their partnership! Seacon’s business model focuses on people, planet and profit, and their sponsorship of the BJF is just one way they are contributing to a more sustainable future.

JAN ZANDBERGEN COMMITTED TO MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Jan Zandbergen has been the proud sponsor of the Black Jaguar Foundation (BJF) since 2015. For them, the events of 2020 were a clear sign that supporting sustainable initiatives is more important than ever. “Exactly with what is going on, we choose to continue to support BJF. Restoring our planet is now more important than ever.” – Peter-Paul Zandbergen, CEO

ACCENTURE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE BJF

Accenture have been instrumental this year in helping us to implement our donate a tree page, among other crucial tasks. Their ongoing support has been crucial to our ability to grow and implement effective systems. In addition we’ve also received the expert support of Accenture’s Financial Consultant, Piet-Hein Goossens this year. Initially on secondment from Accenture, he has now joined the team full time.

2020 MILESTONES: FIELD

THE START OF THE FIRST MILLION TREES!

In October we started planting our first million trees! It’s been a year of partnerships and this would not be possible without the support of our amazing partners Movida Car Rental and One Tree Planted!

. A TOTAL OF 56,997 TREES PLANTED THIS YEAR.

From January to March 2020, 6,997 trees were planted. From October to December 2020, 50,000 trees were planted as part of our first million trees. 30,000 more will be planted before the end of this planting season at the start of 2021!

SOS ARAGUAIA: EMERGENCY ACTION TO FIGHT FIRES IN THE REGION

With this year’s forest fires spreading to the Araguaia region we took emergency action in the form of the SOS Araguaia campaign. What started as emergency assistance to fight fires, will now develop into a preventative action plan for next year.

FIRE BRIGADE

Part of the SOS-Araguaia campaign is focused on establishing a new fire brigade to assist our local partners in fire season, a challenge for 2021!

PROVIDING JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR A TEAM OF 36 LOCAL PLANTERS...

From October 2020 to March 2021, the first 80,000 trees are being planted. To do this we needed help from a few new team members!

This season we had an additional 36 local planters join our team. This number will increase to 300 next year to complete the first million trees.

THE GROWTH OF OUR NATIVE TREES & THE RETURN OF THE FOREST!

This year we’ve been checking up on the some of the trees planted in the previous planting seasons, as part of our 3-year maintenance programme. Thanks to our team’s commitment to quality restoration, and the advantages of the environment, our new native trees are thriving!

Watch the video to see trees of just one year old, already starting to rebuild the forest structure. We still have some maintenance work to do on these sites but the first results are extremely promising!

16

2020 MILESTONES: COMMUNITY

OUR LANDOWNER COMMUNITY GROWS...

...thanks to the strong relationships developing between our team and the local communities, we have 3 new landowners on board, already adding an additional 150 hectares of land available for restoration. We started planting at these three news sites during the planting season which began in October and will continue to reforest their land in 2021.

DONATE-A-TREE PAGE

The launch of our Donate a Tree page was a huge milestone for us in 2020. It allows anyone from around the world to get involved and donate. In doing so, becoming part of one of the largest reforestation projects on earth!

NEW LOGO LAUNCHED

In with the new, out with the old! With all the progress happening it was time for an update with a logo that more accurately represents what we do.

OUR FIRST BRAZILIAN AMBASSADOR: TARCILA URSINI

In December we were honoured to have Tarcila Ursini accept our invitation to become the first Brazilian to join our inspiring group of internationally renowned Ambassadors. A huge advocate for our work Tarcila has been helping to grow our Brazilian community and we’re thrilled to officially have her as part of our team.

GOVERNANCE & TRANSPARENCY Crucial strides in our Governance project mean we now have a world-class Brazilian advisory board guiding us in our next steps and are embarking on an audit process to ensure transparency and accountability. This board meets on a quareterly basis to help guide our long-term and short-term strategy. Next step will be an audit with Baker Tilly and certification for all of the trees we are planting in the years to come.

2020 MILESTONES: ENGAGEMENT

WORK EXPERIENCE WITH LOCAL STUDENTS

The BJF receives students from the University of Goiás to learn about the restoration process and experience the life of a forest engineer, first hand from our BJF Field Coordinator. Covid restrictions this year restricted our capacity to take on work experience students however once we can assure safety this will be back up and running.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN THE CORRIDOR

We’re committed to helping to provide environmental education to schools in the regions where our work takes place. This is part of an inititaive with the Secretary of Environment, Fisheries and Tourism of Marianópolis do Tocantins

This year many of our plans have had to be postponed due to Covid, but we hope to continue to offer these educational workshops in the coming years

BJF GOES LIVE!

In response to Covid decreasing our capacity to interact with our community in person, we got active online and released our first BJF live series.

This was featured on all of our platforms and gave our community an insight into our work and the technical aspects of what we do. Expertly explained by BJF Project Coordinator Dimitrio Schievenin.

FARMER ENGAGEMENT ALONG THE CORRIDOR

Brazil has some of the strongest environmental legislation in the world, at the same time, we know that the implementation of this law (environmental regularisation) is somewhat complicated for the rural owner. Therefore one of our challenges this year and going forward is our local communication. This year we produced and launched our first video WhatsApp campaign, along with radio advertisements, and billboards in the region.

IMPACT STUDY WEBINAR LAUNCHES THE RESULTS OF THE 2019-2020 RESEARCH STUDY (SEPT 2020)

On Wednesday 9th September, 89 guests attended from around the world for our first webinar! At the start of 2020, 11 internationally renowned scientists completed the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor Impact Study. In this webinar, we explored the results of the study and discussed the impact for Brazil, and the world. In a year where deforestation in the country is set to reach an all-time high, we chose to focus on how ecological restoration can become part of a more sustainable future for Brazilian Agribusiness.

CONSCIOUS CAPITALISM, MOVIDA AND THE BJF EXPLORE SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS AND CARBON CAPTURE (OCT 2020) The webinar focused on the role of business in global climate change mitigation. After an introduction to the Conscious Capitalism Institute, BJF Founder Ben Valks shared the story of the Black Jaguar Foundation and our latest updates. Next, Renato Franklin, Movida CEO, discussed their developing strategy to reach their Carbon Neutral commitment by 2030, including their choice to support the Black Jaguar Foundation by planting 1 million native trees!

OUR IMPACT

IMPACT In 2019, the BJF commissioned the Impact Study to estimate the total cost of implementing the Araguaia Corridor, in relation to the total economic, social and environmental impact. The research was conducted by eleven renowned academic researchers led by Andrea Lucchesi, professor of Economics and Quantitative Methods at the University of São Paulo, and Madhu Kanna, professor of Environmental Economics at the University of Illinois. A huge thank you to the global advisory board who oversaw the study, in particular the chair Bianca Nijhof. The study identified 13,148 private rural properties with an environmental deficit in the Corridor area. An estimated 930,704 hectares of land needs to be restored in order to realize the Araguaia Corridor. The results of the study showed the total monetized value of all the benefits associated with the landowner, the communities, and the planet, only exclusing the positive impact on water sources, this will be a key area for future studies.

KEY IMPACT STUDY RESULTS Not only will this project result in 262 million tons of carbon being removed from the atmosphere, but almost 38 thousand jobs will be created. In terms of economic return, the monetized environmental benefits together with additional revenue to landowners equals US$ 21.1 billion. When compared to the overall cost of completing the project, US$2.2 billion, there is a net benefit of US$ 18,9 billion. YEAR 1985

OUR LANDOWNER HEROES We work together with landowners to create a restoration model that works for them. Providing technical and financial support to incentivise restoration and create a win-win. “BJF’s initiative to reforest and assist in this process is very important and will greatly accelerate the recovery of areas of the forest. As a consequence, the fauna will also benefit, with birds, turtles, mammals, and reptiles being allowed more space and more food to survive.” Regina Molke, Fazenda Cedro “We are proud partners of the Black Jaguar Foundation because we believe in the Araguaia Corridor project, which we support and are proud to participate in, being one of the actors in the movement in favour of biodiversity conservation in Brazil”. Marcus Mariani, Fazenda Santa Fé “It gives me great joy to be part of this movement of transition, things have to change, they need to be stirred up and we have to act differently. We have to start giving back what we’ve always taken from nature. I imagine the example we’re setting with this process!’ Daniela Tiezzi, Tiezzi Family Farms REGINA MOLKE, FAZENDA CEDRO

OUTREACH

TIME TO TELL THE WORLD ABOUT THE BLACK JAGUAR FOUNDATION! THE FIRST BLACK JAGUAR FOUNDATION BILLBOARDS LAUNCHED IN DECEMBER 2020 You’ll now be seeing even more of the Black Jaguar Foundation with our first national Billboard campaign in the Netherlands! With the launch of our Donate a Tree page, anyone can now donate any number of trees and become part of this huge reforestation mission. Now we just need to spread the word. Look out for our billboards around the Netherlands as we’ll have more launching throughout the year!

While so much of our amazing community exists around the world, all of our work is for the purpose of planting millions of trees in Brazil. To do this we need local partnerships with landowners who allow us to restore their land. And so, we also have billboards in the Araguaia region in Brazil, promoting partnerships to local landowners. This is one small part of our increasing work to increase engagement with these local stakeholders!

25

IN THE PRESS Building on the growing public interest and the progress we are making with our project, we are keen to raise our public profile and recognition. In September we were featured in Forbes magazine with the story that Arsenal football player Hector Bellerin is donating trees to our project through our partner One Tree Planted. This year we were also featured in the ‘Prestige Awards magazine’, a publication for professionals in the corporate finance and business community, after wining their award for ‘reforestation project of the year’. In August 2020, we were awarded the ‘Best International Wildlife Conservation NPO - Netherlands’ by the 2020 Benelux Enterprise Awards. In September, we actively promoted our webinar among Brazilian journalists about the results of the Green Capital Study and the positive impact of our project. Articles were published in Valor Econômico, the largest financial newspaper in Brazil, and Envolverde, a popular online news platform. Journalists from Mongabay, Reuters and Amazonia.org also joined the webinar with an interest in publishing about our project and the results of the 2019-2020 Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor Impact Study.

FUNDRAISING EXCLUSIVE CORPORATE GIVING We are so excited to have signed our first big corporate sponsor partnership with Movida, the 2nd largest car rental company in Brazil. The company is part of JSL, Brazil’s largest logistics company. It is Movida’s first step to offset its carbon emissions in its mission to go carbon neutral by 2030. We also signed a 2-year sponsor partnership with OneTreePlanted, one of the leading tree-funding platforms in the USA and Canada, and in December they agreed to co-fund the first million trees. As part of this partnership, we were matched with Arsenal football player Héctor Bellerín, to be the recipient organisation for his campaign to donate £ 3,000 per Arsenal win this season. In addition to our one million tree partnerships, donations continue to grow from TheFirst600 Campaign. More notable partnerships from 2020 included new sponsorships from the Finish Profiles Group and Porticus, and so many amazing partnership renewals from companies such as Seacon Logistics, Scelta Mushrooms, Jan Zandbergen and Plant Health Cure. All of our partnerships from the year showed an amazing commitment to our future and the preservation of our planet, even in such unprecedented times, and for that we want to thank each and every one of our donors. A special thanks to our unofficial Ambassadors Floris and Natascha Wouterson who have been helping to grow our donor community for many years now!

DONATE A TREE While most of our funds are still raised through corporate giving, as we grow we want more and more people to be able to become part of this huge reforestation mission, and so, in July 2020, we are thrilled to launch our donate-a-tree page. For a €5 donation, we are able to cover the full costs of the twelve steps included in the reforestation cycle, including 3 years of after-planting forest maintenance. The campaign is in four languages: English, Portuguese, Dutch and German. In November, we officially launched our Donate a Tree page. When you donate a tree with the BJF we offer the option to give your trees as a gift. Over the festive period we asked people to give a gift that makes an impact and donate trees to their loved ones for Christmas. From the launch of our Donate a Tree page until the end of 2020, 3638 trees were raised..

OUR PEOPLE

Meet the green team Since 2018, the BJF has been growing its core team and was able to start paying cash as remuneration for their full-time services. Both the expansion of the core team and the ability to pay remuneration has greatly improved the quality of the team as a whole. The multitude of tasks, initially taken on by a few core members who showed immense commitment are now distributed amongst a larger team of full-time professionals that. NEW TO THE TEAM IN 2020...

Carlos Willyan : Field Supervisor, Santana do Araguaia Originally from the state of Pará, Carlos Willyan joined our team in June and will be helping to expand our operations in the states of Pará and Tocantins, where our work is currently based. Supervising the planting of your new native trees, not to mention the crucial job or monitoring and caring for these new trees for 3 years after they enter the ground! Carol Sacramento : Development Coordinator, São Paulo As of August 2020, Carol became a crucial part of our growing team in Brazil and is helping us develop and build the partnerships that will allow us to plant many more trees. She’s focusing on institutional development and economic sustainability as she helps the Black Jaguar Foundation to scale up our activities in the coming years. Piet-Hein Goossens : Financial Consultant, Amsterdam Piet-Hein has over 14 years of experience at Accenture, consulting finance departments of multinational firms. our ambassadors We are honoured to be supported by a dedicated group of seven diverse ambassadors. Knowledgeable and experienced in their fields, they serve as role models for our society. They all play an active role in supporting us, promoting our project, and providing us with their expert advice. Our team of ambassadors includes HRH Princess Basma bint Ali of Jordan, who has fully dedicated herself to advocate for biodiversity conservation. Named Hero for the Planet by Time Magazine in 1998 and in 2002, elected as a laureate of the Global 500 Roll of Honor for Environmental Achievement (UNEP). BJF Board members and Ambassadors do not receive any cash remuneration. They are only reimbursed for basic expenses such as transport to attend BJF meetings.

our brazilian advisory board In Brazil, our restoration practices are governed by our Brazilian Advisory Board consisting of renowned experts from prominent institutions such as WRI Brasil and the Brazilian Agribusiness Association (ABAG). It provides strategic support for long-term and current challenges, through in-depth, quarterly meetings and focused commitee sessions. In addition, given the country’s complex bureaucracy and history with corruption, the Advisory Board supports our credibility and transparency. The seven-member Advisory Board consists of experts in governance, ecological restoration, agribusiness, environmental compliance, corporate sustainability, the nonprofit sector and social enterprise. The board meets quarterly with BJF management and members of the BJF core team, to discuss issues ranging from new compliance policies and the appointment of an auditor to potential donors and local operational challenges.

FINANCIALS 33

8.1 GENERAL This is the first year that the Black Jaguar Foundation is presenting its combined financial statements in a single report. The Dutch and Brazilian entities are separate legal entities and administer their finances in two separate systems. Although we are not legally an integrated organisation, we act as such and have therefore decided to present you our combined financial statements here. In 2020 the Black Jaguar Foundation installed its own accounting system, Exact, for the Dutch entity. Accenture generously sponsored the implementation and running of the system for the year. We now have more timely and deeper insights into our finances, allowing for swifter action and more control. Amstelstad, and especially Geert Hoes, continue to be our accounting partners, for which we are very grateful. The Brazilian entity’s finances are administered by our long-standing partners, Pró Result. They have supported us since the inception of the Brazilian entity in 2016, know our Foundation well and fully support our mission. João Bosco and his team’s expertise have provided us with the comfort needed from a finance team. Many thanks to them. These partners are of great help, but to ensure we are fully compliant with all rules and regulations and to provide additional reassurance to our existing and future stakeholders, we engaged Baker Tilly to audit our Dutch and Brazilian Finances before publication of this report. Please find a summary of their report here.

37

8. 4 NOTES TO THE INCOME STATEMENT 2020 INCOME The Black Jaguar Foundation more than doubled its income in 2020. The main source of this increase was the restricted funds coming in from our new partners Movida and One Tree Planted. These funds are restricted to planting the first million trees. Many existing donors renewed their partnerships, providing a stable base for further restoration efforts. NET INCOME CAN BE DIVIDED INTO: • Non-Restricted Donations, which the Black Jaguar Foundation can spend in any manner that fits its mission to create the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor • Restricted Donations, which the donor/grantor has earmarked for a specific purpose. Of the funds that were restricted by donors, € 30.000 was earmarked for housing and the rest for Biodiversity Planning and Reforestation • Each of the above can be provided by private sponsors, corporations, and non-profits. OPERATIONAL EXPENSES While income more than doubled in 2020, Operational Expenses only increased by 32%, mainly due to increases in field supplies and human resources, both in the field and working on promoting the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor. In the coming years we expect the costs for field supplies and human resources in the field to increase further as our planting efforts gain speed. THE PURPOSES FOR OPERATIONAL EXPENSES WERE: The purposes for Operational Expenses were: • Biodiversity Planning and Reforestation – referring to all expenses and investments made in the field or directly related to the field work for both Biodiversity Planning and Reforestation tasks • Proposition Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor – referring to all expenses made related to communicate, promote, share the importance of the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor, to successfully build a community of landowners, development partners and institutional partners • Fundraising – referring to all expenses related to raising the funds required for realising the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor • Overhead referring to expenses which do not have a direct impact on the realisation or the promotion of the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor, such as office-rent and utilities. .

8.5 NOTES TO THE BALANCE SHEET 2020 The initiator of the Black Jaguar Foundation has kindly provided an interest free loan, to help the foundation start up. The loan totals € 384.639. It has been agreed that no more than 15% of the loan can be claimed per year and that the amount is subject to affordability by the Black Jaguar Foundation. In 2020 the total loan decreased by € 3.796. A provision of € 40.274 has been set aside for 2021 for the use of the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor concept. This will be paid in kind. The Black Jaguar Foundation, its employees and board are not affiliated in any way with the institute receiving the funds. Social Equity strongly improved thanks to increased income in the past year that is set to be spent on Reforestation in the coming year. Our reserves were negatively impacted mainly because the positive reserves of BRL 86.667 in Brazil were devalued against the Euro.
