BLACKHAWK MAGAZINE

Message from the PRESIDENT

Welcome to the Blackhawk Magazine, a vibrant peek at the wonderful activities and accomplishments occurring at your community’s college. Encapsulated within this edition, you will find stories about our outstanding students, world-class faculty and staff, generous supporters of the college, and activities that underscore the impact your college has on our community. This magazine also stands as a testament to the innovation, knowledge and skill our graduates encompass that make our region a beacon to organizations looking for a skilled and motivated workforce. It is hard to believe it’s been over seven years since I joined the Blackhawk Technical College team and moved into this welcoming and energetic community. Seven years ago, we embarked on a plan to create an institution that is both sustainable under the current economic climate and positioned for significant growth. Each year has brought new opportunities to expand our services to the Rock and Green County communities and, with this expansion, the college continues to gain momentum as we transform your community’s college into a dynamic asset to the economic development of our region.

of our manufacturing programs from Milton to our Central Campus will allow the college to enhance the quality of our services to all students. As you embark on this review of the college, immerse yourself in the excellence of our students, faculty and staff, and the voices echoing the spirit of our campus. I hope this issue of the Blackhawk Magazine ignites your curiosity, educates you on the impact the college has on our community, and serves as a motivator to learn more about what Blackhawk has to offer.

Tracy Pierner, Ph.D. President, Blackhawk Technical College

If you haven’t been by the campus recently, I recommend taking a drive out to our Central Campus and look around. Momentum is one word that describes the activity occurring as we gather steam with the Public Safety + Transportation Complex nearing completion and the new Innovative Manufacturing Education Center (I-MEC) construction underway. The I-MEC project was made possible by a generous $6.85 million contribution by the Blackhawk Technical College Foundation. The relocation

The power of partnerships continues to fuel Blackhawk Technical College’s growth and sustainability. Most recently, Blackhawk and Mercyhealth joined forces through a new scholars program that awards full-ride scholarships to students in programs that will lead to a career in healthcare. The scholarship program, named Mercyhealth – Making Lives Better Scholarship and established in partnership with the Blackhawk Technical College Foundation, includes tuition, fees and books, and is awarded to a cohort of students each spring semester. Mercyhealth donates $40,000 each year to fund the scholarships and provide paid internships at Mercyhealth locations in positions that align with the scholarship recipients’ program of studies. “We are grateful for Mercyhealth’s partnership and generosity as we work together to prepare future health care workers,” said Dr. Tracy Pierner, President of Blackhawk. “This scholarship is a powerful way to ease financial burdens and set students up for success in the health care industry. The added internship component of this program ensures that the students gain valuable real-world experience.” Four students were chosen last spring as the scholarship program’s first recipients. To be considered for the scholarship, students needed to be enrolled in a minimum of six credits and in either Nursing, Radiography, Surgical Technology, Culinary Arts or Phlebotomy Technician. Preference was given to students who demonstrated a financial need.

LINH TRINH – Radiography

LINH TRINH

In 2021, Linh Trinh found herself drawn to the world of medical imaging. After her father’s near-fatal battle with COVID-19, Linh discovered a connection to radiography, a field that became a source of hope for her family. Witnessing the daily improvements on her father’s chest x-rays ignited a passion for medical imaging that eventually led her to pursue a new educational journey. A native of Beloit, Linh initially graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree. However, feeling disconnected and unsure of her path, she realized the need for a change. Her father’s journey prompted her decision to return to school. Choosing Blackhawk for its small class sizes, personalized learning opportunities, and effective teaching methods, Linh said she appreciates the ability to be a hands-on learner. As a recipient of the Mercyhealth – Making Lives Better Scholarship, Linh has been working as a radiography intern.

“I like being able to practice, practice, practice and learn from my mistakes at school with my instructors, then master the skill directly in the field,” she said. “I’m grateful for this scholarship and the experiences that have come with it.” With her eye on graduation in 2024, Linh then plans to apply for Blackhawk’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography & Vascular Technology program.

OUR Students LYNN LANGER – Surgical Technology For Lynn Langer, the pursuit of a college education has always been a dream. After dedicating more than 25 years to a career as an accounting assistant for MercyCare Health Plans, Lynn found herself yearning for a change. She started researching patient-facing health care careers and said Blackhawk’s Surgical Technology program was a good fit. “I like to help people, and this career helps with saving a life,” Lynn said. Crucial to Lynn’s career change has been the Mercyhealth – Making Lives Better Scholarship. “Blackhawk Technical College is the biggest factor in affording to even go to college and obtaining my goal. This scholarship from Blackhawk through Mercyhealth has given me the opportunity to go to college without as much financial constraint,” she said. Lynn, who has continued to work as an accounting assistant, also is working as an intern in surgical technology, gaining hands-on experience.

Blackhawk Technical College is the biggest factor in affording to even go to college and obtaining my goal.

“Working for Mercyhealth has taught me about commitment, passion, teamwork and focus. All of Mercyhealth’s partners have one thing on their minds – to help patients and family members receive wonderful care,” Lynn said. Lynn expects to graduate in 2025 and plans to transition from her role as an accounting assistant to a professional in surgical technology.

opportunity has been opened, and I can freely walk down whatever path I choose. Being a recipient of this scholarship shows that a community cares about my education and wants to help me and see me succeed. It is a wonderful blessing and I’m very thankful for the support of Mercyhealth,” Emily said. Emily has been working as an intern in Mercyhealth’s kitchen, making meals for patients. “Working in the culinary profession at Mercyhealth is unlike anything else I have done. It is a gratifying experience, knowing that I am directly helping someone in need,” she said. Through Blackhawk, Emily also participated in an externship in Fargo, North Dakota at Nichole’s Fine Pastry and Café where she advanced her skills in cake decorating and pastry making. Emily plans to graduate in May and hopes to one day work in a French bakery or at a fine dining restaurant.

MICHAEL DURAN – Nursing When Michael Duran received a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease in 2017, it became a catalyst for his decision to pursue a meaningful career in healthcare. He started working as a certified nursing assistant, and now he is on the path to becoming a nurse. Driven by a desire to assist others facing debilitating illnesses, receiving the Mercyhealth – Making Lives Better Scholarship is “reaffirmation to myself that I am on the right path,” he said. “Working at Mercyhealth has taught me how to put my learned skills in the classroom into real life practice. My confidence builds up every shift that I go to, and I believe that the experience gained here at Mercyhealth will help me greatly when I become an RN,” said Michael. Michael plans to graduate this year and continue working for Mercyhealth. He also hopes to one day be a traveling nurse, experiencing different healthcare facilities and units. He’s especially interested in neonatal care.

“One could say that was heavily influenced - more years ago than I can count on my fingers - by my Easy Bake Oven (thanks Grandma). As I’ve grown up, I’ve come to appreciate that cooking and baking isn’t just about doing it for myself or for the money. This is my way of serving others and hopefully making someone’s day a little bit brighter,” Emily said.

Working at Mercyhealth has taught me how to put my learned skills in the classroom into real life practice.

Originally from Clear Lake, in northern Wisconsin, Emily moved to the Janesville area to attend Blackhawk Technical College’s Culinary Arts program. She called the Mercyhealth – Making Lives Better Scholarship “truly life changing.”

“Sometimes, we all feel as if we fall into a dark pit that seems almost impossible to climb out of. I want to show everyone who feels that way that it is possible, and we are capable of changing our own outlook on life from a negative view to a positive one,” he said.

“I can achieve my goal of graduating college with less stress and a new experience under my belt with the internship. It means a door of

UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS Expand Blackhawk’s Offerings to Include Bachelor’s Degrees

Three Wisconsin universities now offer a comprehensive array of bachelor’s degree programs that grant Blackhawk Technical College students access to a four-year education while fostering a seamless transition from associate to bachelor’s level studies. In August, Blackhawk announced partnerships with Concordia University, Lakeland University and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Rock County. These partnerships are the cornerstone of Blackhawk’s visionary initiative, the University Center. Housed within the heart of the College’s Central Campus, the center is a hub where students can access transfer information, receive guidance from advisors and engage in activities related to their educational goals.

“These transformative alliances signify an extraordinary step forward for Blackhawk,” said Dr. Tracy Pierner, President of Blackhawk. “Our collaborations with Concordia, Lakeland and UW-Whitewater at Rock County stand as a testament to our commitment to fostering accessible, highquality higher education for our community. The University Center is poised to redefine the trajectory of our students’ academic journeys, granting them an avenue to seamlessly pursue their bachelor’s degrees without having to leave home.” The presidents from Concordia and Lakeland, as well as the chancellor from

UW-Whitewater, joined Dr. Pierner and other Blackhawk staff, faculty and students for a grand opening celebration of the University Center in late August. State Rep. Jenna Jacobson, State Sen. Mark Spreitzer, Mark Holzman, Superintendent of the Janesville School District and Blackhawk District Board member, and Rachel Andres, Executive Vice President of Prent and Blackhawk District Board member, also were in attendance. “We look forward to collaborating to see how this partnership impacts not only the communities locally but across the state, and as Concordia University and Blackhawk Technical College work together and work

Dr. Beth Borgen, President of Lakeland, said she was excited to see private and public institutions working together. “We’re excited to help students achieve their educational goals while aligning regional workforce development needs, especially in the areas of computer science, accounting and education,” she said. And Dr. Corey King, Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, said the partnership with Blackhawk and the subsequent collaboration with Concordia and Lakeland is an “application of the Wisconsin idea” to solve problems and critically think about how to help communities. “It’s important that we understand that the partnership is about students. At the end of the day, those students are going to be benefited with an education that will allow them to go into the community and solve and serve,” he said. After a comprehensive application process, the three university partners were chosen for their academic excellence, range of disciplines and dedication to providing Blackhawk students with a seamless transition from their associate degree. Public Safety Center Opens August 2024 Blackhawk Technical College’s new Public Safety Center (PSC) will open in August, housing the college’s emergency services, fire and police programs as well as a track, gym and fitness center. This is the final project within the Public Safety + Transportation Studies Complex (PSTC), which already includes the Center for Transportation Studies, an Emergency Vehicle Operator Course, a Fire Tower, an observation building and a scenario training village.

In 2018, Blackhawk purchased the land at West Sunny Lane and Prairie Street to address the growing demand for additional training spaces. After reviewing all needs, Blackhawk proposed a multi-purpose training complex for EMS/EMT, Fire Protection Technician, Law Enforcement, CDL/Truck Driver Training, Auto Technician, Diesel & Heavy Equipment Technician and Motorcycle Rider Safety. The complex also serves select workforce and community development offerings.

On Nov. 3, 2020, about 60 percent of voters favored Blackhawk’s $32 million referendum to create state-of-theart facilities for the Public Safety and Transportation programs. Construction began in March 2021. By June 2022, nearly all of the projects on the main training grounds were complete and open for use. Construction on the Public Safety Center began in October 2022.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! SEPT. 26 • 4-7 P.M. Check out the new Public Safety Center on Thursday, Sept. 26, between 4-7 p.m. This open house will be held during Blackhawk’s Annual Fall Fest. Both are free and open to the public.

CRAFTSMAN WITH CHARACTER: Transforming Lives through Workforce and Community Partnerships Dave Hataj, owner of Edgerton Gear and a Blackhawk Technical College alumnus, never anticipated the impact his initiative, Craftsman with Character, would have on the community and the lives of young individuals. “I’m a small business guy, and when I developed the course, it worked for our shop. CWC began as an idea to bridge the gap between education and practical skills, aiming to develop a pool of potential future employees distinguished by their strong character.
