Today we welcome the players, fans and officials of todays Premierleague encounter.

Today’s visitors have enjoyed a mixed start to the season and currently sit mid table. That said, two five goal performances in the last fortnight against both Kirrie Thistle and Tranent illustrates how dangerous they will be, averaging two goals every away league game. A fortnight ago in the Fife & Lothians Cup at Rosyth, with a much changed line-up, we eventually eased past the home side with a dominant second half display, the next round sees us host todays opponents Glenrothes on a date yet to be decided. Last weekend at Olivebank, Musselburgh we competed well against the favourites and league leaders and probably deserved a point with our second half display but it wasn’t to be, however an encouraging performance none the less particularly as we were a little short-handed and it was our first defeat in any competition for two months. It’s the long winding road next week to Aberdeen for the Scottish Junior Cup 2nd Round tie at East End, who are currently top of the North Region First Division East. The club are running a bus and there are still some seats available, please make contact with the club to reserve yours. There is a social club at the ground so plenty opportunity for a pre and post match tipple and support the Burnie! Assuming there is no replay, this is the start of a three match away run with two trips over to Fife to Thornton Hibs and then Dundonald Bluebell on the following two Saturdays. On the squad front, ex-Celtic youth striker Scott Hay has left the Club by mutual consent. Scott was on loan from local SPFL side Livingston but was unable to force his way into Mark and Jamie's starting XI and will return to the Tony Macaroni Arena and to the Championship sides development team. Everyone at the Club wishes Scott the very best of luck in his quest to establish himself at Livingston. Arriving at the club as Scott departs is Jason Ward who can play in either a defensive or in a midfield role. Jason featured in our recent midweek friendly win over a Berwick Rangers development team and arrives at the Dem-master Community Stadium after spending last season in the Super League with Dundonald Bluebell. Jason has also played with Dunipace, Sauchie and Oakley United after starting out in the youth set-up at SPFL side Alloa Athletic. Welcome to Blackburn Jason. Blackburn United Ladies took part in a 'Show Racism the Red Card' display ahead of their 9-1 win at Hawick Ladies last Sunday afternoon, a comfortable enough win that saw top scorer Kirst Frew net a hat-trick to help maintain their lead at the top of SWFL Division Two Central as they look to hold off Airdrie Ladies with only three league games remaining. Tomorrow the Ladies host Stenhousemuir in another must win game. Elsewhere, our second year U19's went down 3-1 at Airdrie in a top of the table clash that was the boys first league defeat of the season, a failure to take chances hitting hard their hopes of taking something from the game. By contrast, the first year U19's did take their chances to run out 4-2 winners over Syngenta U19's. Similarly, the U17's took what few opportunities came their way to win 2-0 at home to Fauldhouse United U17's, goals from Liam Brodie and Paul Walker keeping their 100% record at the top of the WLAYFC League Division B table. The U16's battled hard last week too, earning a credible 1-1 draw in a 3rd v 2nd clash against Murieston United Red. Also riding high at the summit of their league are the U14's, although their 1-1 home draw with Linlithgow Rose U14's last Saturday saw them drop their first league points of the season. Finally, the U13's beat their Armadale counterparts 4-1. Last weekend the U15's enjoyed a free week. Enjoy todays game.

Showing four changes from the side that had drawn with Haddington Athletic in the league seven days previously, United were on their heels early against their South Division opponents as they adjusted to an unfamiliar back three formation and Hampson was just too high with an effort from Gilfillan's knock down. Moments later Blackburn too came close, Michael Browne finding Brian Ross and surging into the box to get his head on the resultant cross only for Morrison to head clear. Ross then wriggled free on the right to pull a ball back into the path of Fraser Cormack but he dragged his shot past the left hand upright. Seven minutes later Aaron Gowans was the creator when Ross got onto his square ball from the right only to crack his half volley over the top. Sixty seconds later an off the ball incident resulted in both teams being reduced to ten men when referee Mr. Addy dismissed both Ewan Herriot and Hampson for going chest to chest in the aftermath. Before the break the hosts came close when McCann strode forward unchallenged to unleash a twenty five yarder that flew narrowly over. With James Mildren on for Cormack at the restart United were able to settle into the second forty five minutes quickly and were in front on forty eight minutes when Ross beat the offside trap on the right to square for the supporting Ross DONNELLY to guide past Rowbotham from close range. Moments later it was Gowans who found space on the right to square onto the edge of the six yard box but Browne's clever back heel flick was held by Rowbotham. At the other end Russell drove from right to left across the Blackburn eighteen yard box but his parting effort flew over the left junction of post and bar. However, this was only a momentary respite for the hosts and United moved two in front on sixty one minutes when Richie Hutton, Donnelly and Gowans linked on the left to create the chance for ROSS to lash a fantastic volley from a tight angle high across the 'keeper and in at the top right hand corner. Ninety seconds later the lead was three and the tie done and dusted when Ross set up Gowans to fire a low one across the face of goal that HUTTON got to to direct past the despairing dive of Rowbotham. Only a further three minutes had elapsed when a fourth Blackburn goal arrived, Donnelly rolling in ROSS to draw Rowbotham and slide a shot out of his reach and into the waiting net. Substitute Danny Campbell then hit the base of the left hand post before ROSS completed the scoring and his hat-trick when Campbell raced clear of a flat footed back four to unselfishly draw the 'keeper and square for him to roll the ball into an empty net. Five minutes from time it really should have been six but after Callum Heath had did well to pick out Campbell for a close range shot Rowbotham did well to save. Blackburn United lineline-up: Marley, Herriot, Drummond, Rarity, Browne, Cormack (Mildren 46), Gowans, Young, Donnelly (Heath 70), Ross, Hutton (Campbell 64) Subs (not used): Ward, King Rosyth lineline-up: Rowbotham, O'Connor, Robertson, McCann, Morrison, Clark, Gilfillan, Pratis, Hampson, Russell, Slimmings Subs: Page, Johnstone, Cowie, Houston, Franklin

Fraser Spence: Fraser stepped up from Whitburn FCA U19’s to play with local rivals Whitburn for two seasons before arriving at the Dem-master Community Stadium for the start of the 2013/14 campaign. Fraser plays primarily in the middle of the park and won a clean sweep of Player of the Year awards at the end of the 2015/16 season. Sponsored by: Michael McDermott Jason Ward: After featuring in the friendly against a Berwick Rangers select in September, 24 year-old Jason signed for United in October 2017. Jason spent last season at Super League side Dundonald Bluebell but before his spell at Moorside Park Jason had also plied his trade at both Oakley United and Sauchie after coming through the youth system at SPFL side Alloa Athletic. Ross Williamson: SPFL side Hamilton Academicals was the starting point for Ross who had a previous spell here in Blackburn back in season 2007/08 and season 2008/09 before moving to Kilsyth Rangers in the west. A perhaps light weight striker when he left, Ross returned in 2012 as a dynamic midfielder who doesn't give the opposition any time or space on the ball. Sponsored by: James West Darren Fleming: Darren began in our own Community Club youth set-up before a season at Stoneyburn was followed by two at West Calder United from where he signed on at New Murrayfield Park at the beginning of October 2016. Sponsored by: Kevin Dewar Chris Marshall: With Stoneyburn until the start of the 2013/14 season, Chris has since been amateur with Whitburn Bluebell, Cross Tavern and Loganlea United and arrived at the Dem-master Community Stadium at the outset of last season. Sponsored by: Sibbald Training Fraser Cormack: A 20 year-old attacking midfielder signed from Broxburn Ath U19s, Fraser has also been on Dundee United and Livingston’s books as a youth.

Sponsored by: Graeme & Fiona McGinty Aaron Gowans: After spending a brief period on trial with Bo'ness United, 20 year-old full-back Aaron arrived at New Murrayfield Park in the summer of 2016 on the back of a youth career that included spells at both Winchburgh Albion and Armadale Thistle Sports Club before a season in the amateurs at Blackridge Vale. Sponsored by: H Mobile Tyres Ross Donnelly: Ex-Stoneyburn and Fauldhouse United man Ross arrived at the Dem-master Community Stadium in November 2016 after a stint in the Super League with Broxburn Athletic had followed his time at Park View with Fauldhouse. Sponsored by: Red Hot Windows Andy McQuillan: Prolific striker Andy is the Club's all time record goalscorer who first pitched up from West Calder United at the very end of the 2006/07 season. Top scorer in all of his full seasons at the Club, Andy has had spells away from New Murrayfield Park with Livingston United, Fauldhouse United and Broxburn Athletic but returned for a third spell in November 2015.

Sponsored by: Blackburn United Ladies & Girls Danny Campbell: 24 year-old Danny was an absolutely prolific striker while coming through the youth ranks at Murrayfield Park and netted his first goal for the 'big' side as a 16 year-old in the win at Dalkeith Thistle at the end of 2009/10. Manager Dad Mark eased him in gently in his first full season during 2010/11 and this helped him to become the potent goal threat he is now, whether playing through the middle or in a wider role. Sponsored by: Angie Campbell James Donaldson: James is a 31 year-old striker with Super League experience at Sauchie, Bo’ness United, Broxburn Athletic and Camelon and was signed in the summer of 2017 to add to United’s attacking options. Sponsored by: William Henderson Brian Ross: 22 year-old Brian is a front man who started out in Motherwell's youth system before spending a little time at both Forth Wanderers and Fauldhouse United. Brian then signed for SPFL side Cowdenbeath where he enjoyed a prolonged run in their first team during the 2016-17 season. Brian joined the Club early in September 2017.

East Region Premier League - Saturday 30th September 2017 Blackburn United Haddington Athletic

McQuillan 25 OG 39mins

After the resounding win at Park View against the league leaders seven days previously Mark and Jamie went with an unchanged starting XI in this game against third placed Haddington Athletic, but with the Millfield men boasting an impressive recent record in Blackburn it was a cagey start from both sides and fully twenty minutes had elapsed before any semblance of a threat arrived at either end, Ewan Herriot and Danny Campbell linking to good effect for the latter to whip in a cross cum shot that was forced out for a fruitless corner. By this time, Blackburn had already been forced into a change with the luckless Fraser Spence picking up an injury and hobbling from the pitch to be replaced by Richie Hutton. However, not many more minutes had passed before United eased ahead in what was continuing to be an exceptionally tight affair, Craig Young and Brian Ross working a short corner on the right for the latter to clip in a delivery that John Drummond forced goalwards and that Andy McQUILLAN was onto in a flash to thump into the roof of the net from only a few yards out. The visitors then came close when Hill's free-kick was blocked and his follow-up was touched past by Kyle Marley and closer still when Moffat headed Devlin's resultant corner onto the top of the bar. An equaliser duly did arrive though only a few short minutes later, Marley failing to hold onto a corner from the left that ended with another corner being given away. This time from the right, the dead ball arrived at the near post where a bit of miscommunication between Marley and Herriot ended with the full-back getting his clearance header all wrong and unwittingly diverting the ball into his own net. Just before the interval the Hi-Hi looked all but sure to move ahead but Callum Rarity did brilliantly to chase back a scuffed Brown shot and clear it to safety with the aid of the left hand upright. Blackburn resumed matters very clearly in possession of the whip hand and when Ross spun into space on the left to flight in a ball from which McQuillan engineered a shot that was only half cleared Alysandratos in the visiting goal had to be at his best to turn away a James Mildren effort at full stretch, the ball brushing against the right hand post on its way past. A terrific piece of play down the United left then saw Drummond swap passes with Young and set Hutton in on the left of the Haddington box but when his square ball arrived invitingly for McQuillan his first time, side foot effort was blocked a yard from goal by the lunging Hamill. Heading into the closing ten minutes and with Blackburn piling on the pressure Aaron Gowans and McQuillan combined to get the ball into the Hi-Hi's box where a bit of a stramash ensued and only came to an end when the hand of the visiting centre half helped divert the ball to safety. It was, though, an offence that went entirely unpunished by referee Mr. MacDonald who seemed to indicated that the hand ball had been unintentional. Before the end Hutton set up Ross for a twist and a turn that resulted in a shot from the edge of the area that was held by Alysandratos and then Rarity, up supporting the attack, saw a half chance blocked on the line as honours ended even. Blackburn United lineline-up: Marley, Herriot, Drummond, Mildren, Rarity, Spence (Hutton 24), Browne, Young (Hutton 78), McQuillan, Campbell (Gowans 77), Ross Subs (not used): Heath, Cormack, Hay Haddington Athletic lineline-up: Alysandratos, Berry, Hamilton, Hamill, Wilson, Hill, Wright, Brown, Moffat, Devlin, Jones Subs: Tufail, Temple, Gillan, Chapman, Cockburn Referee: Mr. George MacDonald

Part 5:

19851985-86 A few new faces arrived at the club in preparation for a first tilt at Division A. Brothers Jamie and Steve McCormick arrived from Strathbock Juveniles, midfielder Peter Walker from Boghall Aces and Eric Burton from Stoneyburn. 19 year-old Michael Leydon also arrived, having been farmed out by Falkirk. Jackie Brown provided sponsorship of the new home kit, with Lothian Plant sponsoring the change kit. Things started well with only one defeat in the first nine matches, which included progression to the semi-finals of the League Cup, and a midtable position in the league. This run didn’t last however and after Preston Athletic had been overcome on the League Cup quarter-final on 28th September, another victory didn’t arrive until 1st February with a 2-0 win over Haddington Athletic. During this time Linlithgow Rose dished out a thumping in the League cup semi and we exited the Junior Cup after a replay to Fauldhouse where a 2-0 lead was thrown away at Park View in the final minutes of the match, leading to a 4-1 defeat in the replay at Murrayfield Park, with a certain Jim Woods notching a hattrick. In January, manager “Kitty” Dunnigan handed the club a shock in the form of his resignation and was replaced by Dick Hodgson, who was once on the books of Grimsby Town. This precipitated a good run-in to the season which saw three wins in the last six games to ease any relegation worries, and saw the signing in March of striker Colin Penman from Whitburn, which would turn out to be an astute piece of business. Steve McCormick ended the season top of the scoring charts with 13 goals, his brother Jamie was Players Player of the Year.. 19861986-87 Jim Henderson replaced Dick Hodgson in the managers chair and appointed former Bristol City and Airdrie player Allan Riley as his assistant. Top scorer from the previous season Steve McCormick left to join Fauldhouse United, with striker Jim Woods coming the other way. Other new arrivals included Richard Morrison, Colin Blackley and Sam Peden all from Harthill Royal Bar and Stuart Dunn from Stoneyburn. The season opened badly with only one point coming form the opening three league matches, including a 71 thumping at the hands of Edinburgh United. The first league win came at the fourth attempt when Jim Woods scored the only goal against his old club Fauldhouse United. However that was to be the last league victory until Dalkeith Thistle were overcome 3-2 at Murrayfield Park in February, a dreadful run that ultimately sealed our fate. The indifferent form continued and despite 5 points being collected in the final 4 games, it was too little too late and Division B beckoned once again. Jim Woods and Colin Penman ended the season as top scorers with 8 goals apiece. Colin was Players Player of the Year along with goalkeeper Paul Lerr, who also was awarded Player of the Year.

Young 14, Ross 23, McQuillan 72 & 77

United made the short journey to Park View for this West Lothian derby against a side top of the table at kick-off and around twelve minutes in had debutant 'keeper Kyle Marley to thank for the scores remaining level when he touched away a MacLeod eighteen yarder that looked destined for the top corner. Two minutes later the value of that save was underlined when Blackburn took the lead from a Ewan Herriot throw-in, Michael Browne heading it on into the danger area and when Brady could only head it half clear Craig YOUNG tamed the loose ball before slamming it high past Hutchison. A glancing Andy McQuillan header from a Danny Campbell cross moments later then almost doubled the Blackburn lead but Hutchison clung onto it before Young and John Drummond linked to set up Browne at the edge of the area but his side foot effort flew over. However, the second goal was only delayed and in an almost identical move to the first, Browne again knocked a Herriot throw into the heart of the Fauldhouse box where Brian ROSS was on hand to rifle the ball home on the volley. Before the interval the Park View men carved out a half chance when Bennett forced the ball to Dunn but he hit his effort over the junction of post and bar. On the resumption Blackburn's pace going forward continued to cause the hosts all sorts of problems and when Campbell began a move that involved Young, Drummond and Ross it was the latters pass that provided Drummond with the opportunity to hit an angled drive goalwards that Hutchison touched past the upright. When O'Donnell got onto a long ball and delivered for Bennett his shot was lifted over the top as Fauldhouse tried to get back into the contest but it was Blackburn who continued to set the tempo and a fine piece of hold up play by McQuillan saw the striker roll a pass back to Ross whose effort flew across the face of goal and past. Next, McQuillan held off Watson to turn and curl in a shot from the edge of the box that Hutchison saved before his hard work was eventualy rewarded at a Young corner kick, McQUILLAN peeling into space to power a header beyond the 'Hoose goalkeeper. Five minutes later it was four and it was the head of that man McQUILLAN again, finishing off a move that ended with him nodding a Ross cross past Hutchison despite the 'keeper getting a hand to it. Before the end McQuillan almost claimed a hat-trick but, after Young had won possession and picked out Ross to slip a pass into the strikers path, Hutchison was quick off his line to block his shot.

The club was formed back in May 1964 when Brigadier R.S Doyle, the chairman of Glenrothes Development Corporation, decided the town had grown large enough to have its own junior football team. The Corporation donated £250 to get the club started and on August 15, 1964, the Glens played their first competitive match in the old Fife Junior League, a derby with local rivals Thornton Hibs at Dovecot Park, which they lost 3-2. Glens would go on to become one of Fife’s most successful sides winning almost every regional title available. Glenrothes greatest success as a club came in 1975 when they won the Scottish Junior Cup, defeating Rutherglen Glencairn 1-0, in front of a crowd of 17,776 at Hampden Park. Glens had also been runners-up in 1968, losing after a replay to Johnstone Burgh with a combined attendance of 50,000 over the two ties, an impressive achievement given that they had only been formed a mere four years beforehand. The club moved from Dovecot Park to a new home, Warout Stadium, in 1971, one of the larger grounds in Junior football, with room for around 5,000 spectators, 730 of whom can be seated. Their record attendance came in 1974 when 5,600 watched a sixth round Scottish Cup tie against Cambuslang Rangers. The club’s success dried up during a 10-year barren spell in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, but the club eventually got back among the silverware, with the most recent success coming in 2010 when they lifted the Fife League Cup.

NEXT SATURDAY

One of the top clubs after re-organisation of the league set-up in 2002, they were relegated from the Superleague in season 2005–06 but they returned to the top flight after clinching the Premierleague title the following season.

However relegation again came on the last day of the 2009-10 season and they even spent season 201516 in the North Division but it was a short stay and they bounced back as runners-up to Downfield. Last season they finished the Premierleague in eleventh position, comfortably above the relegation zone.
