The Seasiders of course pipped us to the South Division title last season after a dramatic final game at New Countess Park, but after losing six of their squad in the close season they have had an indifferent start to their Premierleague campaign. However recent results have shown that they are more than capable of moving up the table and away from the danger zone. As ever, this will be a closely contested contest. Last week at Dundonald Mark and Jamie made a couple of changes to the starting XI from the one which won at Thornton Hibs the previous week, but unfortunately both John Drummond and Craig Young suffered first half injuries which hampered our performance. Craig Young in particular may be struggling to feature today after suffering a heavy knock. That said, we performed well against our Superleague opponents and matched them for long spells of the game. The draw for the third round of this seasons Scottish Junior Cup saw us still in the hat come the final four ties, with Auchinleck Talbot, Beith and Rutherglen Glencairn all still in there, but as fate would have it we drew a home tie against Annbank United or Colony Park from Inverurie. In last weeks match in Ayrshire, postponed originally due to the Inverurie sides bus breaking down en-route, the men from up north came from behind to win 2-1, therefore we will host Colony Park in next weeks match. After leading the way from the very first week, United Ladies sealed the SWFL Division Two title with a 1-0 victory over Motherwell Ladies at the beginning of the month when Kirsten Frew latched onto a loose ball inside the Motherwell box to slam it past the visiting 'keeper and into the corner of the net. That early Frew strike was enough to earn promotion to the SWFL First Division for the Ladies ahead of nearest challengers Airdrie Ladies who fell three points short thanks to a decisive 2-0 Blackburn win at New Broomfield early in the season when goals from Shannon Mulligan and Vicky Wood, United's top scorer, scarcely reflected United Ladies superiority that afternoon. Congratulations to all the girls and to Connor, Nigel and the rest of the coaching staff . Elsewhere, United's second year U19's marched confidently into the Semi Final of the County Cup with an impressive 7-0 victory over Airdrie side Victoria while the U16's also progressed in the County Cup, battling out a 3-3 draw at Armadale Falcons before edging home 4-3 on penalties. The U13's were in County Cup action at Armadale too, winning 6-1 against Armadale Red. Finally, after leading 2-0 in the original tie before it was abandoned when the referee got injured, the Blackburn United Amateurs moved into the last 32 of the Scottish Amateur Cup with a narrow but deserved 1-0 win over Carluke Thistle. Tomorrow, the United's U17's travel to North Lanarkshire to face Jerviston U17's in the Fourth Round of the Scottish Cup while other Community Club fixtures over the weekend are; Blackburn United U13's v Livingston FC U13's Whitburn U14's v Blackburn United U14's Shotts YMCA U15's v Blackburn United U15's Kirkfield United U16's v Blackburn United U16's Victoria U19's v Blackburn United U19's Blackburn United U19's Black v Murieston United U19's Red Enjoy todays game.

United's long journey north began in the Dem-master Community Stadium car-park at 9:30am and ended in the shadow of Pittodrie Stadium less than two hours before kick-off with the players surveying an undulating New Advocates Park that was being buffeted by a strengthening North Sea gale. With the hosts sitting atop the North Region First Division with a 100% record after their opening nine games it was going to be a tough ask to justify McBookies pre-match odds of 1/5 but inside fifteen minutes Blackburn commenced doing just that, Richie Hutton running in behind the East End back lot to get onto a Craig Young through ball only to be pushed clumsily to the ground by Donald. For denying a clear goalscoring opportunity the big centre half was dismissed and captain YOUNG made no mistake from the resultant penalty, driving the ball low into the bottom left hand corner. Hutton then ghosted in behind again moments later but just when Danny Campbell's cut back looked like it would arrive perfectly for him Valentine did well to divert it away from danger. However, a second goal always looked likely and arrived when Young found Brian Ross on the left and his pin point delivery found the head of Ross DONNELLY who nodded firmly past an exposed Ellis in the home goal. Aberdeen did then create a half chance but when Todd got in on the right his shot was comfortably saved by Kyle Marley. Not much more than a minute later United were back on the attack and the lead was three, Young again the creator when finding ROSS out on the left once more and his cross come shot swirled high past Ellis and into the top right hand corner with a little help from that gusting wind. Before the half time whistle sounded a Donnelly shot was inadvertently blocked by Campbell as he tried to get out of the way and Campbell himself had an effort disallowed for offside or the margin between the teams would have been greater still. Young started the second period in much the same way he had ended the first, winning a tackle and creating a chance by slipping Campbell in on the right but his shot was blocked by Ellis. Marley too was in early goalkeeping action, touching Todd's half volley past after he had been set up by a Dunbar knock down. However, the next goal was to again be Blackburn's, a quick free -kick by Ross finding that man Young on the left of the area and when his square ball arrived in the six yard box John DRUMMOND was on hand to side foot home. Five minutes later it was 5-0, Campbell making ground on the right to half-hit an angled shot on target that took an awkward bounce in front of Ellis who, none the less, managed to fingertip it away but only into the path of ROSS who steadied himself before thumping it past Petrie on the line. Ross then hit a swerving shot off a James Donaldson pass as he went looking for his hat-trick and Donaldson himself hit the bar with a neat flick from fellow substitute Aaron Gowan's cross before the sixth and final goal of the afternoon arrived not long thereafter and it was the culmination of some fine football, Drummond playing the final, telling pass in front of GOWANS who took a controlling touch before blasting it high past Ellis and into the top right hand corner from around sixteen yards out. Blackburn United lineline-up: Marley, Herriot, Drummond, Mildren, Rarity, Browne (Williamson 53), Ross, Young, Campbell, Donnelly (Donaldson 74), Hutton (Gowans 70) Subs (not used): Ward, Spence Aberdeen East End lineline-up: Ellis, Davidson, Valentine, Petrie, Donald, Wilson, Jopp, Todd, Dunbar, Koshoedo, Duff Subs: Rennie, Masson, Mathers, Coyle, Walker Referee: Mr. Stephen Nicol

Fraser Spence: Fraser stepped up from Whitburn FCA U19’s to play with local rivals Whitburn for two seasons before arriving at the Dem-master Community Stadium for the start of the 2013/14 campaign. Fraser plays primarily in the middle of the park and won a clean sweep of Player of the Year awards at the end of the 2015/16 season. Sponsored by: Michael McDermott Jason Ward: After featuring in the friendly against a Berwick Rangers select in September, 24 year-old Jason signed for United in October 2017. Jason spent last season at Super League side Dundonald Bluebell but before his spell at Moorside Park Jason had also plied his trade at both Oakley United and Sauchie after coming through the youth system at SPFL side Alloa Athletic. Ross Williamson: SPFL side Hamilton Academicals was the starting point for Ross who had a previous spell here in Blackburn back in season 2007/08 and season 2008/09 before moving to Kilsyth Rangers in the west. A perhaps light weight striker when he left, Ross returned in 2012 as a dynamic midfielder who doesn't give the opposition any time or space on the ball. Sponsored by: James West Darren Fleming: Darren began in our own Community Club youth set-up before a season at Stoneyburn was followed by two at West Calder United from where he signed on at New Murrayfield Park at the beginning of October 2016. Sponsored by: Kevin Dewar Chris Marshall: With Stoneyburn until the start of the 2013/14 season, Chris has since been amateur with Whitburn Bluebell, Cross Tavern and Loganlea United and arrived at the Dem-master Community Stadium at the outset of last season. Sponsored by: Sibbald Training Fraser Cormack: A 20 year-old attacking midfielder signed from Broxburn Ath U19s, Fraser has also been on Dundee United and Livingston’s books as a youth.

Sponsored by: Graeme & Fiona McGinty Aaron Gowans: After spending a brief period on trial with Bo'ness United, 20 year-old full-back Aaron arrived at New Murrayfield Park in the summer of 2016 on the back of a youth career that included spells at both Winchburgh Albion and Armadale Thistle Sports Club before a season in the amateurs at Blackridge Vale. Sponsored by: H Mobile Tyres Ross Donnelly: Ex-Stoneyburn and Fauldhouse United man Ross arrived at the Dem-master Community Stadium in November 2016 after a stint in the Super League with Broxburn Athletic had followed his time at Park View with Fauldhouse. Sponsored by: Red Hot Windows Andy McQuillan: Prolific striker Andy is the Club's all time record goalscorer who first pitched up from West Calder United at the very end of the 2006/07 season. Top scorer in all of his full seasons at the Club, Andy has had spells away from New Murrayfield Park with Livingston United, Fauldhouse United and Broxburn Athletic but returned for a third spell in November 2015.

Sponsored by: Blackburn United Ladies & Girls Danny Campbell: 24 year-old Danny was an absolutely prolific striker while coming through the youth ranks at Murrayfield Park and netted his first goal for the 'big' side as a 16 year-old in the win at Dalkeith Thistle at the end of 2009/10. Manager Dad Mark eased him in gently in his first full season during 2010/11 and this helped him to become the potent goal threat he is now, whether playing through the middle or in a wider role. Sponsored by: Angie Campbell James Donaldson: James is a 31 year-old striker with Super League experience at Sauchie, Bo’ness United, Broxburn Athletic and Camelon and was signed in the summer of 2017 to add to United’s attacking options. Sponsored by: William Henderson Brian Ross: 22 year-old Brian is a front man who started out in Motherwell's youth system before spending a little time at both Forth Wanderers and Fauldhouse United. Brian then signed for SPFL side Cowdenbeath where he enjoyed a prolonged run in their first team during the 2016-17 season. Brian joined the Club early in September 2017.

Captain Craig Young and wide man Brian Ross returned to the starting eleven after missing the game at league leaders Musselburgh seven days previously while striker Andy McQuillan surprisingly started on the bench as United looked to recover from that defeat at Olivebank and it was Blackburn who were the first to show, a quck break upfield by John Drummond allowing Danny Campbell to find Richie Hutton who smartly swapped passes with Ross Donnelly before seeing his shot blocked. Another neat piece of interplay, this time between Michael Browne, Campbell and Donnelly ended when the latter skied a shot way too high from the edge of the area. The visitors then found a way forward, McDonald seeing a shot blocked that fell kindly for Walker but he guided his effort past the left hand upright. Young was next to creat an opportunity for United, setting in train a move that ultimately came to naught when Donnelly took one too many touches and was closed down before shooting. The striker, though, after a deep Ewan Herriot cross was missed by Campbell but fell for him to curl just over the junction of the right hand post and bar. After the opening forty five minutes failing to produce a goal it took only five second half minutes to produce two, the first coming when Ross found space on the left to cut inside and hit an effort goalwards that spun up into the air with the aid of a def lect i on wh ich HUTTON was onto quickly to nod past Small from six yards and open the scoring for United. The second arrived at the other end not much more than sixty seconds later after Kinnes slalomed forward and found NAPIER who took a touch and lifted a cracker over Kyle Marley's head and into the net from the edge of the box. A terrifc pass inside the full-back by Hutton was then taken on the run by Campbell but his first time shot was saved by Small low down to his left. A Young corner then made it to the back post where Callum Rarity met it with a header that Small blocked on the post and James Mildren couldn't squeeze the follow-up between that same post and a clutch of defenders. Glenrothes, too, came close but Walker nodded a Leslie corner past when in acres of space. With seventeen minutes remaining Drummond was strong in the tackle to win possession and release Ross on the left and when he squared across the eighteen yard box Campbell took a touch before having a pop that the 'keeper held. The winner, though, arrived just a couple of minutes later, Donnelly holding up play on the left until support arrived in the shape of Ross who clipped a pass into Browne and gathered the return before smacking the right hand post with a curling right footer that cannoned against the unfortunate Anderson to fly back into the waiting net to seal the points. Part 6:

19871987-88 The bulk of the previous seasons squad was retianed , with the additions including ex Whitburn and Raith Rovers winger Chic Spence, striker Brian Fleming and 18 year olf Stvie McElhone a re-instalment from Hibs. The season started off well with three straight league victories and progression to the League Cup quarter-finals after a play-off win over Whitburn. Just two league defeats were suffered by February, although crucially these were at the hands of Livingston United and Stoneyburn, both fellow promotion candidates. By that time the quarterfinals of the St.Michaels (MRS) Cup had been reached and Broxburn Athletic were edged out by the odd goal in three. Another Division A club Fauldhouse United were swept aside 5-1 in the semi-final at Murrayfield Park in April. Meanwhile, the promotion campaign was fizzling out with the inability to record victories against the three other main contenders being a major factor. Coach Allan Riley left in December and Jim Henderson ran the team on his own. In the Junior Cup, a visit to Largs Thistle in the second round resulted in a 2-0 defeat. The final match of the season took place on 28th May at Broxburn’s Albyn Park against Ormiston Primrose in the St.Michaels (MRS) Cup Final. With the league’s top goalscorer Colin Penman (on 29 goals) in top form and raring to go hopes of a first cup success were high. Sadly, it was not to be as Ormiston, who finished third in Division A, broke hearts with their 2-0 victory. 19881988-89 Squad: Paul Kerr, Keith Shanks, Gerry Ganner, Brian Hannan, Alan “Audie” Simpson, Stevie Carr, Davie Bell, Jamie McCormick, Paddy McLaughlin, Paul Donlon, Jim Baker, Jim Woods, Colin “The Bear” Penman, Stuart Dunn, Brian “Kiddie” Fleming, John Craig, Peter Walker, Kenny Slater, Drew Elliott. Jim Henderson appointed John Callan as his new assistant and some new arrivals include Gerry Ganner from Boghall Aces, Paul Donlon from Whitburn and ex-Bathgate Thistle striker Davie Bell from Fauldhouse United. Hugh Temperley left to join Livingston United and Frank Close to Shotts Bon Accord. The campaign started with a disappointing 3-5 home defeat to Preston Athletic and an away draw to Dunbar, whilst the League Cup campaign didn’t progress past the group stages. Despite the indifferent start, the team were beginning to gel and 10 points out of 12 from the next 6 league matches saw steady progress towards the top of the table with Davie Bell banging in the goals supported by Colin Penman and Brian Fleming, promotion prospects looked good despite the departure of Keith Shanks in Febuary to promotion rivals Armadale Thistle in a swap deal for Jack Brown. With the season drawing to a close, the last two league games were against promotion rivals Camelon at Carmuirs Park and Armadale Thistle at Murrayfield Park 3 days later. Two wins would secure promotion but despite a Davie Bell double and a strike from Brian Hannan, only a point was secured at Camelon. Against the Dale, Davie Bell’s 20th goal of the season was enough to claim the two points, but in a cruel end to the season Camelon went to Volunteer Park in their last league game needing the two points to overtake Blackburn into the second promotion spot, which they duly aquired. East Region Premier League - Saturday 14th October 2017 Musselburgh Athletic Blackburn United

Thomson 16 & 65 McQuillan 72(pen)

Edinburgh & District League

United travelled east and to a first league visit to Olivebank in 16 years without captain Craig Young and influential wide man Brian Ross and the enforced changes appeared, at least in part, to contribute to a sluggish start that saw hosts and league leaders Musselburgh boss the early part of the game but without creating anything in the way of chances. Indeed, it was Blackburn who carved out the first real opportunity when Richie Hutton got in on the left from where his cut back was cleared when perhaps a pop at goal might have been the better option. However, Musselburgh's early monopoly of the ball did eventually end in the afternoon's opening goal, ex-United man Jed Davie delivering from the left only for Moffat's angled effort to be well off target and land back out at Davie's feet and when his second cross skittered across the six yard box and wasn't cut out THOMSON bundled an effort home from six yards. The hosts continued with a surfeit of possession and continued to do not so very much with it, a couple of long range efforts flying over Kyle Marley's bar. Just before the half hour mark it was again Blackburn who carved out an opening and again it was Hutton getting in on the left, this time after Andy McQuillan had got the slightest of touches on a Ewan Herriot cross from a Danny Campbell pass to head it into his path, but his shot was blocked. Two minutes later United came closer still but Callum Rarity was unlucky to see his header from a Campbell corner hit the crossbar. Five minutes from the interval Ross Donnelly set up Campbell for a cross which was overhit when both McQuillan and Hutton were unmarked on the back post and hoping for a better delivery. The hosts resumed the game on the attack but after Moffat and MacDonald had linked well King's shot from the latters cut-back was blocked by Herriot. At the other end a quick and clever free-kick by Fraser Spence put McQuillan in on the left but his shot from a tightening angle was saved. With Blackburn now enjoying much more possession and territory than before it was then perhaps against the run of play that Musselburgh moved two in front not long after the hour mark, a looping delivery into the box not being adequately cleared and dropping kindly for THOMSON to hit shot into the ground from the edge of the box that bounced one more time as it squeezed past an unsighted Marley and into the bottom left hand corner. The deficit, though, was halved seven minutes later when substitute Aaron Gowans and Herriot combined for the full-back to try and get the ball across the face of goal and when his attempt to do so deflected back to him he was uncerimoniously sent sprawling by a clumsy Donaldson challenge. From the resultant penalty McQUILLAN confidently netted. With little more than quarter of an hour remaining Athletic nearly found a way past Marley again but when MacDonald held off Rarity to roll a ball back to Thomson he could only side foot wide. A Campbell hitch-kick from a Gowans cross was then way too high as Blackburn looked for an equaliser with the Olivebank men beginning to try and run down time, although King had a gilt edged opportunity to kill the game from only a few yards out but somehow couldn't get the ball past Marley. However, with Musselburgh content to run the ball into the corners thereafter the win was already theirs.

Ex player Geoff Jones was appointed Manager in the summer of 2014 after spending many seasons at the club before ending his playing career with Haddington Athletic and he is assisted by Derek Aitken who was previously with Haddington Athletic. Geoff has appointed two ex Dunbar players, Graeme Lennie and Ryan Grant as his coaches joining Dunbar based Sandy Inglis who steps up after years of experience with Dunbar United Colts.. Liam McCathie: Goalkeeper. Liam signed for the club in the summer after stepping up from Bonnyrigg Rose Under 21's. and has taken the move in his stride with some excellent performances in his limited appearances. John Johnstone: Goalkeeper. 'Jinky' returned to the club in 2015/16 after finishing his studies in Aberdeen where he had been playing for Banks o' Dee. Local Dunbar lad first signed in season 2008/09 before leaving for university at the end of season 2011/12. Currently out with a fractured wrist. Keith Tait: Dunbar based defender or attacker who played 3 seasons with amateur sides West Barns Star and East Linton before signing for Dunbar in September 2011.Almost an ever present since then and friendly rivalry with his brother Steven who is the club Captain. Sam Young: Originally from Stenton near Dunbar he signed for his hometown club in October 2009 but left after a season to join Berwick Rangers Reserves. Returned to the club at start of season 2012/13 and has been a prolific scorer since then. Big and strong his goal scoring exploits speak for themselves. 235 Appearances and 146 goals. Steven Tait: Played 5 seasons with Tranent Juniors before signing for his hometown club in October 2012 having played 3 games as a Trialist in 2007. Teamed up with his brother in the Dunbar side and made Captain for last four seasons. Midfielder who has now reverted to playing full back. Dean Ballantyne: Musselburgh based youngster who was signed in the summer of 2015 from Juvenile side Musselburgh Windsor where he was a prolific goalscorer. Very hard worker up front he knows where the goals are and after taking time to adjust to this League he is finding the net on a regular basis. 105 Appearances and 68 goals. Steven Kean: Another 2015 summer signing from Musselburgh Windsor this Haddington based midfielder has again taken the step up to Juniors in his stride. Been playing full back recently and likes to push forward at every opportunity. Darren Handling: The third summer of 2015 signing from Musselburgh Windsor who had played previously with Dean Ballantyne and their partnership up front is a delight to watch. Darren Gillon: Berwick based midfielder who has a wealth of experience and signed at the beginning of season 2015/16 from Newtongrange Star. A great signing for the club but has missed a large part of this season with an ankle injury. Chris King: Another astute piece of work by our Manager after signing him from Newtongrange Star in the East Super League. Another striker with a wealth of experience who can only benefit the rest of the squad. Always dangerous in front of goal. 100 Appearances and 57 goals.
