2025 New York Red Angus Association Right on Red Sale Catalog

Page 1

Saturday April 26, 2025 Sale Starts 1:00 PM

Friends and Fellow Cattle Producers:

It’s hard to believe this is our 3rd Annual Right on Red Sale. It started as a vision to provide an opportunity and location for our New York Red Angus Association members develop to their cattle from weaning to yearling. However, as we discussed this plan, the vision grew and expanded to include not only development of quality red genetics, but to also offer these genetics to our customers.

We’ve learned a lot over the last 3 years and we haven’t stopped expanding our vision! The bottom line is there are exceptional red genetics being created by amazing breeders in not only New York State, but surrounding states. Year after year, the quality becomes stronger and deeper. This year is no exception and we proudly invite you to join us on Saturday, April 26, 2025 to evaluate the cattle and take home the genetics that will help you meet your herd goals. If you want more time to evaluate the cattle, they will be ready for viewing at the Seneca County Fairgrounds by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025.

In November 2024, the majority of the yearling bulls and females in this offering began a development program at Erwindale Farms in Waterloo, NY. These cattle have been developed on a high forage diet and continually assessed for structural correctness, optimal growth and measured for carcass characteristics using ultrasound technology. Additionally, all bulls have passed a breeding soundness exam.

Age-Advantaged bulls have been added to the 2025 Sale Offering. These bulls were born in the Fall 2023. They were held to the same strict criterion of the yearling bulls. They, too, have passed a breeding soundness exam.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPD)

EPD values published in this catalog are current as of March 11, 2025. Both the American Hereford Association and the Red Angus Association of America update their EPD values weekly. You can check on the respective websites for the most up to date EPD values.

Many of the cattle offered in this sale have genomically enhanced EPD values. This means the consignors sent into their respective breed associations a DNA sample for individual cattle. This information is added to the actual performance and pedigree information to predict the EPD values. Genomically enhanced EPD values have higher accuracy values for those individuals with no progeny compared to individuals with no progeny and no DNA sample.

The GGP logo indicates the Red Angus bull or female has genomically enhanced EPD values.

The AHA GE-EPD logo indicates the Hereford bull or female has genomically enhanced EPD values.

Effective EPD use is to compare EPD values to another individual of the same breed or to the breed average for a particular trait. Taking the difference between the EPD values will indicate the difference in performance you can expect between individuals or between the individual and the average of the breed. The difference is expressed in the standard unit for the trait (weight, inches, centimeters, square inches, etc.). The current average EPD values for Red Angus and Hereford cattle are as follows:

The Power of Genomically Enhanced EPDs

The American Hereford Association (AHA) has embraced the use of genomics into their genetic evaluation by launching a first of its kind single step analysis that utilizes the marker effects of specific traits. Likewise, AHA is directly estimating accuracy values rather than approximating. The direct estimation of accuracy results in a more conservative value but a more accurate value than previous methodologies. The AHA is producing the most reliable genetic evaluation that is supported by Whole Herd TPR™ and genomics, which will give prospective buyers added confidence in purchasing young and unproven animals.

Buying animals that have a genomic profile incorporated into their Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) offers many advantages that allow for quicker breed and herd improvement. To the right is a table showing the average increase in accuracy when buying a young animal with a Genomic Enhanced EPD (GE-EPD) versus an animal without a GE-EPD. Similarly, an effective progeny number increase is listed by trait that shows how many progeny equate to a genomic enhancement of a young animal (e.g. yearling). That’s right, buying a young animal that has been genotyped is like having 2-17 progeny, depending on the trait. The proof gained on young, non-parent animals, through a genomic enhancement is valuable and greatly mitigates the risk and allows for more directed selection.

Red Angus Guide to EPDS and Indexes

ProS ... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).

HB ..... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value).

GM..... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the postweaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value).
