“Mom, I want to go home now!”
It was March 2006 and my little girl was sobbing in my arms. Our very ill nine-year-old daughter had just been through a total colectomy. As spring turned into summer, her health needs increased, culminating with multiple hospital stays, and even requiring an emergency surgery. Because of my daughter’s numerous health issues, my husband and I decided to educate our children at home and began researching the best curriculum to support us in this new endeavor. That fall, the Lord led us to try the BJU Press Homeschool Video Courses. We began that journey with two babies, a preschooler, and five children from kindergarten to 6th grade.
Although homeschooling these past 16 years has been very challenging, BJU Press Homeschool has offered us incredible resources to help us be successful.
One of the biggest challenges for me was teaching multiple ages simultaneously. The year our eleventh baby was born, we were homeschooling eight children with a child in every stage of life: newborn, preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, and college. Because the BJU Press Homeschool Video Courses are taught directly to the child, the curriculum gave us all the resources to educate each child in every developmental stage of their education: expert teachers, visuals, full-color textbooks, scheduled assignments, testing, lesson plans, and grading. With the new BJU Press Homeschool Hub, I can create class schedules for multiple children and keep better records. I spend less time preparing and more time just being a mom.
Another big challenge is balancing multiple children’s academic and emotional needs while keeping the household running. There were days when the house was not clean, the kids were fussy, and the laundry covered the entire couch! I feared, “Can we really do this?” and “Will our children learn and be ready for college?” I knew that if God was in this, we could succeed with His help. I set up a schedule for the home that included chores, laundry, meal planning, and school times. Using the BJU Press Homeschool Videos Courses, we could educate our children at home without me having to teach every child individually. I instructed my children to follow my schedule and to work independently in school. This allowed me to care for the youngest children, take care of the house, and give attention to those who needed help in school.
It was important to us to have not only welleducated children but also godly children. One of our biggest goals was to teach our children to love the Lord with all their hearts. And we desire that our children not only read the Word of God but also learn how to apply it in everyday living. By formulating their textbooks with a Christian worldview, BJU Press Homeschool came alongside us and helped teach our children critical thinking skills and God’s plan and purpose for this world. By the grace of God, we will be starting our 17th year of homeschooling with one in high school, one in middle school, and one in elementary. We will have graduated seven children out of our homeschool: three working on their graduate degree, three in university/Bible college, and one serving on staff at our church. Yes, homeschooling can be challenging, but BJU Press Homeschool has helped our family succeed, and we give glory to our God in every step!
