War & Peace

A spy from America The year was 1783 and I was in Paris, just before the peace between the USA and Great Britain. I was walking among the crowd, when I saw a man that was talking to another man in the dark. I walked to the man and asked him if I could talk to him for a while. He gave some kind of card to the other guy and started to walk towards me. The other guy walked the other way, in to the darkness and disappeared in to the crowd. The man was walking very slowly and with his hands in his pockets. He had sunglasses and all of his clothes were like dark grey. He was just in front me and he asked who I was and what I wanted. I said that I only was curious chap in the twenties, and I wanted to know more about the war. I asked if I he knew anything ‘’special’’ about the war that we didn’t know anything about. He moved closer and whispered in my ear and said that he was a spy. I was lucky that he didn’t know I was a journalist that was about to reveal everything. He said that he only would tell me once. I said okay and he started to tell me all kind of weird things. He said that a helicopter would come and pick him up from an unknown place. But that wasn’t the information I would like to know. I asked once again if he knew something that we didn’t know. He was quiet for a short time. He checked the time on his watch and said the time was 11.40. In exactly one hour and twenty minutes the peace would be valid. He said that I should follow him, and so I did. We went out of the crowd and into a ‘’lonely’’ street. I asked if he could tell me the whole story from the beginning. - But before I tell you the story I should introduce myself, he said. My name is Brian and I work for the U.S. Government. - Okay, let’s get started, did he say. The whole story started 1775 with just a little fight between the USA and Great Britain. Some say it happened because Great Britain had many colonies in the USA. But I know that it wasn’t like that. It was the USA who started the war because they were jealous of Great Britain’s people who had better education than the USA. Suddenly a man started to run to us. He ran to Brian whispered something to him, Brian gave me a visiting card and started to run for his life and since then I never have seen him. After about 20 min the trumpets started to blow and I knew that the peace was valid. After the ‘’big show’’ of fireworks and music all the people started to go different ways. I started to go the bus station and took the bus to the airport. I took an airplane back to London and started to write what I had seen and heard on my journey. I called the number on the visiting card and the voicemail was answering and said:

- Hey, I had to run before from the crowd because in my government card the expire date had passed, and if somebody saw me with an expired g-card, they would have killed me. They would have thought that I was some kind of immigrant that was taking another person’s card. I don’t we’ll see each other again, so I wish you good luck with your newspaper articles. I wondered how he found out that I was a journalist. I was wearing some ordinary clothes, so it couldn’t be that. But now I remembered, I was holding a microphone towards him there it stood BBC news. It was kind of embarrassing when he knew that I lied to him. Anyway, I finished my paper works and was very happy with my work. I gave the text to my boss and he said that he was giving me a rise in salary. I thanked very happily and started to pack my stuff and headed to my sweet home. Oh, I forgot to say. After the ‘’pip’’ in the voicemail, he wondered where I lived. I answered that I lived in 221B Baker Street in London, England, and that he could come and visit any time that he wanted (except on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.) That was all from me, thanks and good bye!

Boston 1783 I was in Boston and there was just a war, and USA and Great Britain had just made peace. It was very empty. The whole Boston was abandoned. I couldn’t see any houses. I met a little girl on the street and asked if I could ask some questions. She said yes. Her name is Betty and she is just 12 years old and her brother Christian is 19 years old. Both of their parents died in the war. Great Britain took their mother and killed her a little while after that. Their father was a soldier and died because another soldier from Great Britain shot him. Betty said that when the war was started 1775 it was a disaster in the country. No one liked the six guys who dressed up their selves to Indians and throw all the tea in the ocean. Because it was their fault that the war started. But that USA wanted to keep their colonies was also a reason to the war. Betty and Christian thought that it was a very hard time when the war started. When the British army came to USA they started to shot and everyone got panic. It was a disaster. She thought it was very horrible to be a child in a war. They got really much shit. The British army took abuse of that they were young and didn't had anything to say. www.bablon.com www.ne.se www.sorummet.se Vad varje svensk borde veta Nationalcyklopedin

An interview with Tomas Watt - a usual man in Richmond 9th April 1863 Hello, my name is Jonna and I am in Richmond in the state of Virginia. The war is now over. The Nothern states won and very many people died in the war but I have found a man from the Southern states. He is injured but he will let me ask him some questions. I have interviewed Tomas Watt and he thought that it wasn't fair that the North had so much money and much more things. In the North the industries and cities grew and became bigger in 1861, when the war was about to start. The industries made the money come running to them. It was a whole new lifestyle up there and we in the South were the same as it has been for generations. We got money from the cotton fields, where the slaves were used as labour. For a couple of years ago the North blocked our harbours so we couldn't export the cotton to other countries so we didn't earn as much money. A couple of days ago, the Souths had to give up. The Norths army was twice as big as the South now and sickness and starvation were some of the reasons that the Southern states gave up. Provision and material were about to run out and the Shanondoah Valley - the valley where most of the farming were made - was now destroyed and totally desolate. I thanked Tomas for the interview and he walked in to his house again. K채llor: Illustrerad vetenskap, allt om historia, nummer 6/11

An interview in Russia. July 25th 1941.

Hi my name is Kane Johnson and I’m a reporter from USA! I was in Russia on a mission to find out how the Russian army was doing! I was interviewing Vladimir Zhukov who had been blind just because he got his eyes poked out of a German commander. Vladimir was telling me about the war but I couldn’t quit understand what he was telling me because I didn’t know so much Russian. He was shambling about something whit that how the Germans infiltrated the Barbarossa and how they fought whit big and fast tanks. He told me how the Russians where under armed and they didn’t have the strength that the German army had, then he begun to yell something on some hard Russian words. The doctor came and said to Vladimir to calm down little bit but he didn’t stop, and then suddenly a German soldier came in and pulled up his gun and shouted something on German. I begun to shake and sweating on my hands, he aimed his gun at me and said: Bist du eine Russian he yelled. I started thinking on some lies I could tell him, then I got an idea. No I’m a German reporter and I have a mission from my boss that I would interview a Russian and see how the was living now one month after our great battle on Barbarossa I lied to him, as lucky I was he believed me and didn’t shoot me in my head. But sadly the German soldier heard on Vladimir that he was a Russian, he aimed his gun on Vladimir and pulled the trigger. Then he killed the doctor and then he looked at me and said, I hope that you got your interview. Because now you are going to leave this place and return back to German and walked out. I couldn’t stop crying over Vladimir’s death, he felt like a nice guy. But I had to go back to USA because or else I could get killed to, so I went to the air port and flied back to Washington, USA. I told my boss that had happened and he looked whit big eyes on me and said: how said, but I’m glad that you okay I published my interview on the newspaper and send it out in every town. I wished that I could get more information from Vladimir but I got interrupted, I couldn’t complete my work. I hope my work will send a message to the people of USA and show them how the country in war has it.

My name is Kane Johnson and this is my story about Vladimir in Russia!

OSAMAS HISTORY This is a report by general Osama. He is a general over many soldiers. He told me how hard it was, he was off in Iraq war. In 20 March 2003 the war began and ended in 1 May 2003, but the American soldiers have been in Iraq until now... In April 2003 came the American soldiers to Osamas house in Basra and they took him to the American camp in Al-kot. He was assaulted there and he froze to death, because he was naked all the time and the soldiers peed on him, so he was stinking all the time. They wanted him to tell them the Iraqi plan and where Saddam Hussein was. But hi didn't say any thing so they cut off his little finger. The first day they cut off his little finger, the next day they cut off his ring finger, the third day they cut off his long finger and they kept going until all his fingers were gone. One day the Iraqi soldiers attacked the American camp in Al-kot, so the solders who guarded him, they went to the war. It was just one who guarded him, so they didn't gave him a attention. After a few hours, the soldier who guarded Osama, was very tiered so he was about to sleep. After one hour, Osama faked he was sleeping, so the soldiers who guarded him slept to. Osama woke up and then he kicked the soldier until he died. He was in a lot of pain so he was very close to passing out. When he started to walk out from the camp, the Iraqi soldiers found him and after that he didn't remember anything because he passed out. He woke up in hospital. The hospitals name was Al-kindi. It was many people there, young and old people, and injured soldiers. He could see people dying every where. It was like a nightmare, he said. After a few days came his parents to take him out and then they moved out to north Iraq "Kurdistan", because it was good there.

3 may 1982 Stanley I am in the main hospital for injured soldiers. There are people everywhere - nurses, soldiers, wives and children. Young men are crawling in, and dead men are being thrown out. I can see death, I can hear the despair, and I feel the fear. Three days ago, we got some information about the war. The brittishair force dropped bombs, in a large amount, over Port Stanley, the air force of the Falkland Islands. The Argentina was prepering their air defence and had all the soldiers in their stations. The bombs destroyed the whole air force – the airplanes, the buildings, and it killed hundreds of men. Some of them got away alive, but almost everybode was injured. Thousands of people lost their sons, husbands or brothhers. I am walking around in the hospital to pick up pieces of facts, but it's hard. If hell was on earth, this would be it. I'm trying to get to the roof to get some pictures, but when I get to the fourth floor, standing and staring. It is like another world. Everything is calm and quiet. I can only see a few nurses, they are calm. All the doors are closed, but I can see the men in the beds. There are at least three men in each and every room. I introduce myself to one of the nurses and ask her why it's so calm. For a few seconds she is looking at me as if I was from space. ”All the men in this floor just had an operation, they need to rest.” She explains that meny of them were very badly injured, that their conditions is still changeable. In one of the rooms there is only one boy. It looks like he is about twenty years old. I knock on the door, the man smiles so I'm walking in. I introduce myself over again. The man is just looking at me. He says that he hasen't seen someone so confident since the war begun. His name is Carols, and he grew up in Argentina. Hi is talking alot about his sister. She is seventeen years old and trying to get in to medical school. ”She is all I have left.” he says staring at his hands. He is nervously fiddleing on his finger nails. ”She doesn't even know if I'm alive.” I'm looking at Carlos' legs. They are both chopped off. Only a stump of one leg remains and the otherone is cut off below the knee. I'm asking him to tell his story. The military head quarter got out in the newspaper to recruit soldiers. Carlos was going to get sent to the Falkland Islands together with aboute 700 other young men. None of them wanted to join the army, but Argentina had conscription so they had no choise. They all got transported by boat from Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, towards the Falkland Isladns. April 1 the captain ordered everyone to be gatherd in the restaurante. He told the soldiers, that the British Army had disembarked on the Falkland Island, that they were about to attack the Argentina Camp. The next morning were Carlos and the rest of the soldiers in Port Stanley, the British Army was at Lake Point. 700 men was walking towards the enemy. Nobody said a word. They were young men, without interests in war, and they were about to fight against educated soldiers. Suddenly the general told them to come to halt, the enemy was close. ”You shall feel no fear!” he yelled. Carlos wanted to drop everything he had and just run. He didn't want to die, but hwo did? They faught the enemy. Their officer got cilled, and soldiers died. Carlos couldn't let go of the thaught that he was killing people who was just like him. But once again – he had no choise. The next day, April 3, came the strengthening. Another 100 innocent young men were pushed into the war. Their officer asked Carlos if he had ever flew an airplain. ”No, Sir!” he replyed. The officer explained that the airforce needed some healthy pilots and that Carlos had been recomended to the air cheif marshal. Carlos had two choices – learn how to fly an

airplane or to stay on the field. Carlos saw his chanse, if he had stayed in the field he would have died in a couple of days. He was exhausted. Carlos started to pack hes belongings. He got three days to rest befor the lessons of how to fly an airplain begun. The men hwo thaught that the war only was on the field was wrong. The war was all aruond the Falkand Islands - in the water and in the sky. The air cheif marshal was ready to let them fly an airplane after a week. They had no more time for education. The main advice was to fallow your instincts. Carlos was a fast learner and started out as second pilot after a few days. His partner was called Plane, because he was one of the best pilots at the air force. Plane and Carlos conected, and Plane refused to fly withoute Carlos. They was a team and they made difference. They were sinking the enemies ships and the enemy threatened to shoot down every airplane near the Falkland Islands. Carlos officer ordered Plane and Carlos to stay in the buildings to repair arplains for a few days. Nobody was alowed to start an airplane for two days. But one morning everything chanched. The British air force had planned to destroy the whole air force. ”All men in your stations!” was the order. They had to defend themselves. The bombs started to drop over Port Stanley. Carlos felt that panic spread. He had to do his job, but it was too late. The hole air force was aboute to collapse. Carlos saw the danger. If that whole building was going to fall in peices, he didn't wanted to be under it. Carlos ran out to the field together with orher men, but none of then was Plane. They saw the building collapse infront of them, the building that they were inside of three minutes ago. The danger wasn't over. The enemy had seen them, and flew towards them. The bomb struck down 50 meters away from Carlos. His partners was badly injured. He tried to help them out when the next bomb struck down. Carlos was transported to the hospital in Port Stanley. He needed an operation fast. I'm just staring at Carlos. I don't know what to say. ”They need me out there” he says. ”And now I'm worthless.”

Kabul 2006 Hey we are here in Kabul to be trying to get an interview. But as it is looks it not so easy to interview someone from the town. But as it is we got a soldier to interview in fact he has been a soldier for years here in Kabul. He tells us about hove stuff has been seen 2001 when the terrorist attack against world trade center tock place. So now a day you can’t trust anyone from this country because it can be suicide bombers or heavily armored men from al Qaida. Sometimes you fink that it all is gone be like before but then a child soldier or something else going down. Seeing your friends with their last minutes left to live because of a Taliban has shot them in the chest. Seen the first month at service you are in a pretty bad shape mentally. You just want to go home sometimes but then you get a pretty good filing about serving your country. Have you been shot? Yes but only in the ring finger so I have been lucky to even survive this mess. But my best friends down her who’s taken hostage of some bloody terrorist. We found his lifeless body in big bloody parts so we can only imagines which pain he has been in. so it’s not a nice work some times when you need to put your friend in a plastic bag. How are the police? They are the worst cops you can imageries. When we entered the police station we found drugs growing in plants outside. End the cops where high when we entered. When you did go down there you didn’t fink that it who’s that bad but it sure whore really bad. I just got a report of a bomb exploding in center of Kabul so I need to go by… That who’s what I got and there we herd of hove bad it really is in this city and bigger parts of Afghanistan.

The Afghanistan! “It’s like hell! The screams, the gunshots, the explosions. The year was 2001 when I arrived to Afghanistan. I came to the military base. Then Corporal Jack Harrison showed me where my platoon was. A week later we went to a little village. First we did fired a few crossing missiles. When we came in to the “capital” of this village there were many Afghans with rifles. They watched us carefully when we came in with our vehicles. They shouted at us. We were sure that we would find Usama bin Ladin. We also knew where an Al-Qaida base where. I never doubted my platoon! I protected them and we were like a family. The thing was that we found Usama bin Ladin. We had to kill him. When we came to Usama bin Ladin’s “fortress” half of my platoon stormed the front of the house. And my group Secured outside around the building. Unfortunately we had to kill a few people from Al-Qaida instead of arresting them. But now they can’t hurt anyone anymore. So when the mission was successfully accomplished, two choppers came to get us out of there. We still have soldiers in Afghanistan. But it’s for the Afghans own safety so they wont be afraid of Al-Qaida and Usama Bin Ladin. “How did you feel when you arrived home?” “It was a very good feeling to finally be with my family” “Can you imagine going to Afghanistan again again?” I asked him. He told me that he didn’t know really. But he told me he would miss the “Brotherhood”.
