A few words…... 2020/21 has been an unprecedented year. All of us, individually and collectively, have gone through changes. The year has made it abundantly clear that it is a matter of when we will hit learning curves, not if. Taking a step back and assessing the events, we have learned to respond to crises and grown wiser in learning how to handle steep learning curves. These articles hope to reflect the changes and growth that companies and even society as a whole have gone through. Our team worked with various entrepreneurs, discussing their adaption to the COVID situation to emulate the year the magazine was written in. Through virtual interviews done from the safety of our home to in-person interviews done taking all the necessary precautions, we learned a lot along the way and had fun talking with these visionaries. Each person we interviewed and each person who contributed with an article brought a unique perspective to the table that this editorial needed, and we are grateful for your insights. The hard work of the BIZstyle team would have been for naught without the encouragement and support from the entire LA family. So, we extend our profound gratitude to the LA education group, administration, management, faculties, advertisers, guest editors, alumni, content contributors, and our batchmates for supporting us throughout this journey and for everything they have done to enrich the reading experiences of our reader. We, the BIZstyle team, have worked tirelessly for months to create and curate the pages that follow. We have tried to shine a spotlight on thought-provoking topics, which we hope entice stimulating discussion. We appreciate and thank you for your readership. We hope you find comfort and inspiration in these pages. - BIZstyle Editioral

akemart, established in 2019 just before the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused many of the businesses to struggle for their business. It was then when Jyoti Poudel, Niroj Kandel and Rajan Gyawali, three cofounders of Cakemart found the opportunity amidst this pandemic. The cake has become a synonym for celebration, be it a birthday party, anniversaries, baby shower, corporate events, and many more. Founded by three cofounders along with their head chef, Manish, they now employ a total of 12 people, including themselves. Their mission is to provide an affordable- budget customized cake for middlesized families, highly customized according to the need, premium quality raw materials, whilst maintaining excellent customer satisfaction in every interaction. From designing a cake themselves with the continuous support of their chef Manish to handling their social media themselves which are the main platforms through which they interact with their customers for excellent customer satisfaction, and the prime location of their factory makes them stand out among other cake shops inside Kathmandu. Their superb team of highly trained and motivated employees along with the co-founders ensure that all goods are produced and distributed fresh to their customers. Cakemart strives to stay ahead of the competition and their teams are continuously working and innovating to bring new products into the market. The vision of co-founders is to eliminate the need of a customer to visit a physical cake shop, bargain

with the owner, and end up paying more for customized cakes. In the words of Mr. Kandel, for any business to sustain it requires Passion, Dedication, and Patience. They say that the market of cake shops is really good, the only problem is the lack of support, proper policy, and guidelines for e-commerce from the government. Recently, they faced a problem due to unclear guidelines set during the lockdown for delivery. Also, the high traffic makes delivery on time quite difficult for them sometimes. Due to COVID-19, the online shopping culture in Nepal has also changed. Cakemart is committed to providing a cake that is affordable, customizable, premium taste, fresh, and delivered at your doorstep; so why not try it once? After all, let’s support small businesses!- Aashish Wagle, LACM

Pepe Pizza With an aim of serving pizzas as conveniently as other fast food items, Pepe Pizza was established by a group of 6-7 youths, out of which 3 were the graduates of Little Angles College of Management. In a span of few years it gained popularity and today they have outlets in 12 different places including their new outlet in Itahari. The fast food industry in Nepal has always been dominated by momos, burgers, and fries with their cheap price and easy availability. According to Chhiring Yonjan, CEO of the company, Pizza was once considered a luxury food. Places that served Pizzas mostly consisted of local flavor and missed that authentic Italian flavor. So, with a primary goal of offering pizzas in prices similar to that of other fast foods without compromising on its quality, Pepe Pizza was founded. Their thin base crust is what makes them different from others. When asked about the challenges they faced, Yonjan replied that making people accept the concept of thin base crust pizza was difficult during their initial phase. Most available pizza places offers pizza in thick crust. So they tried to twist the recipe and change the ingredients which somehow worked for them

to overcome their challenges. Pepe Pizza as a brand is different from their competitors as they provide pizza at a price range affordable to all the customers. They have also partnered with local vendors for ingredients such as cheese, sauce, chicken and many more. While talking about COVID-19 pandemic, Yonjan explain how the pandemic has made all businesses difficult to sustain in the market with addition to managing the staff. Irrespective of all the challenges, somehow Pepe Pizza was able to manage it. Even though the business was closed partially, they were able still to serve customers with take away services by following all necessary health protocols. Yonjan further implied that she wishes to expand its outlet all over to country. For promotion, they primarily rely on Social Media marketing and Word of Mouth from satisfied customers. They have even added Pepe Ice-Cream to their menu with different premium flavors to choose from. With their affordability, quality, and taste, Pepe Pizza has become one of the popular Pizza chain restaurants in Nepal.

KUSUM FOUNDATION NEPAL Kusum Foundation Nepal is a non-profitable organization founded in 2020/21 by Kusum Tamag Poudyal amidst the COVID-19 crisis. Its main focus is on three areas - Education, Empowerment, and Sustainability. It believes that education empowers people to look after themselves in a sustainable environment. So, they work on projects to empower people to bring sustainable development. We got in the conversation with its founder and here’s how everything went down. 1. Tell us a little about your current work. Currently, our main project is “Immediate COVID Relief” where we distribute hot meals to daily wage workers, provide basic health support for homeless and low economy people. We have also collaborated with other organizations in providing scholarships to students from urban poverty-stricken families (daily wage workers) whose studies have greatly been affected due to the lockdown and digital learning era. We work on providing them with essential materials including funding for their schools. 2. How and why did you start the foundation? What motivated you then? I have always been motivated in doing social work and have been working in this field for 15 years. During my time in Burma, Australia and India, I have worked with different people/organizations and got the opportunity to learn many things from them. When I started to feel capable and confident enough, I returned to Nepal. When I was involved in COVID relief projects with other organizations, I came to realize that although

Along with distributing food and relief packages to accommodate physical loss, we are also trying to lessen their mental stress by engaging them in conversations. It’s also these little things that help them to move forward. 5. How has your work changed you as a person? One thing I have realized is that people come from different backgrounds and each has its own stories. So, we should not be too quick to judge people based on their current situation. We have to know that we are no different from them. It’s just the fact that maybe we have a little bit more privilege than them. So, my experience has taught me to be more humble and giving. 6. Can you share with us a memorable experience during your work? Many moments are special to me. Like the time when we helped a 16-year-old girl living in the streets deliver a child. I and my husband were present there the entire time and it was the first time I saw a baby being delivered.

12

Please look around yourself. You never know who is going through a hard time and mental distress. So let’s be vigilant and ask people if they need any help. It does not have to be huge materialistic help. Sometimes all they need is someone to listen to their problems and help cope with them. Look after your family and friends, and don’t turn a blind eye to their cry for help. Next, you can donate money or any other things that may help someone in need. Let’s be involved in any way you can because it’s a rewarding experience.

I did my studies in health care management.

14

As for promotion, we have not done any kind of proper marketing. Our business has been successfully providing the best service to our clients. Due to this, our clients themselves

promote our business to other potential customers. So we have not spent much on marketing. As of today, we have provided our service to 600+ customers, out of which 90% of them have given us positive feedback. Hence, our main promotion has been from the word of mouth of the customers. 4. As you are a home-based service with a lot of clients, how do you manage your team?

Currently, we have 80-90 staff. Most of them are freelancers. We assign our staff according to the needs and requirements of our customers. We provide semi-skilled health workers to our customers who 7. What makes you different from other health care providers? require health services for filling the gap of their family members. fact that while staying in hospitals for a long period of time, cost also increases. Whereas, Medilink provides better service at an affordable price. Another advantage to consider can be that patients are treated in their own room which makes them more comfortable and relaxed. Due to the current situation of COVID-19, a new concept has developed i.e. not staying at the hospital for too long. As people prefer getting their medication at their own home, the service that Medilink provides is very useful for those people.

COVID-19 has affected our business, but we are happy to share that we have been able to provide good service even during this tough situation. During the pandemic, most of the hospitals were running out of beds and equipment. So, we tried to convert our patient’s houses into hospital setups along with on-call doctors, and stand-by nurses providing timely medicine. We were able to successfully set up ventilators by using the BiPAP machine, which helped to save many of our patient’s lives and we are very proud of that. Because of this, we were able to build trust with our clients and maintain good public relations.

According to my experience, we are available for 24 hours. If some kind of obstacle arises we do not say no and we try to solve it on the spot with our stand-by nurses. We are very attentive in our service which makes us different. So, clients prefer us over other health care providers.

6. Why do you think people should choose Medilink over hospitals?

It is not that customers are choosing Medilink over hospitals. But people do consider the

Currently, she is making fitness and lifestyle content for over a year and is aiming become to be a certified fitness trainer. Other than that, she works as a makeup artist as well as a beauty educator and owns a beauty studio named "Gitanjali Makeup Studio" in Butwal, Nepal. You can find out through this interview that in-person she is calm, passionate, sweet, and insatiable 1) Being an influencer your life is more vulnerable than a normal person's. Despite that, what is one thing people don't know about Gitanjali? - All of my viewers think Gitanjali is mentally strong, and nothing affects her. But I am very emotional and highly sensitive.

- Nowadays, everyone is into makeup. Just because everyone is into makeup, that does not mean you need to be too. So, first question yourself, "Is this something that I want for a long time, and do I enjoy it?" If yes and you are passionate go for it. And give your best, work hard, and be consistent. But don't expect results at the very beginning and keep going even if your hard work fails sometimes. 4) How was Gitanjali as a child? - Gitanjali as a child was very talkative, a little mean, and very mischievous. Even my mom sometimes tells me about how when I was a child and made mistakes and she used to scold me, I would either talk back or cry. 5) What inspired you to start your fitness journey? There are so many clickbait videos like lose this much weight in two weeks and so on, I suggest not to go for short-term goals. Short-term and unrealistic goals don’t give lifelong results. Glam Empire Beauty

Started as a one-man army; Glambyshru has now emerged as Glam Empire Beauty with the team of four members: talented Shrusha Shrestha (Founder / Senior artist), fierce Jessica Pokharel (Owner/ Senior artist), humble Smriti Gupta (Owner/Senior artist), and hardworking Rita Gurung (Owner/Hair department). Glam Empire Beauty is a makeup studio specializing in makeup artistry, providing salon service and beauty courses. They currently have two branches located at Kupondole and Durbarmarg. 1. What made you take your business from a oneman army to a team? (Glambyshru to Glam Empire Beauty) - Shrusha: Working for all these years, some people

have supported me, and some haven't. So the thought of valuing the person who values me made me take the step. Also, when I was alone it was a huge workload to handle everything including behind the scene but now with a team, they handled everything very well despite my physical presence and as employees, they have given 100%. Furthermore, I thought they deserved to be owners too. 2. How did the glam empire beauty form? - Shrusha saw potential in other team members. Shrusha offered other team members to become owners as they were also the hands behind the goodwill earned by Glambyshru. The other team members were more than happy to join in. And

hence, Glam Empire Beauty was formed. Why glam empire beauty? Shrusha: I guess Jessica and Smriti would answer this question as they chose Glambyshru for their makeup course at the beginning. Jessica: I, being a student of Glambyshru, like the skills here and find that the course is definitely worth the money. Smriti: In my experience, other studios are scared of sharing all the skills and techniques. But everything is taught transparently in Glambyshru, and now in Glam Empire Beauty. Rita: In Glam Empire Beauty, the environment is good and flexible. How has covid impacted your business and the plans you had? For a certain period, we faced problems as we had just opened our new branch in Jhamsikhel. We were in a growing phase and the lockdown led us to some rental issues. So, we had to shift to Kupondole. Luckily Kupondole was much prettier and the rent was way less. So it is safe to say that the pandemic gave us a hard time. But eventually, we grew a lot during this time. Lockdown gave us free time to plan. We utilized this time by providing online live classes that, in a way, strengthened our audience and customer base. Worst moments with clients/students as a team? A few of our worst moments were: Shrusha messed a little bit with off-location bridal makeup as the client was not satisfied. One of the clients was expecting Shrusha but Smriti showed up, which may have disappointed the bride. But overall the bride's mindset was very irritable, and the bridesmaid was constantly disturbing us. So, we could not deliver our 100%.

-

The client did not show the picture of the hairdo they wanted, even on multiple requests. On the other hand, Rita was also not able to understand what the client wanted. So, the client left the studio without any hairdo. 6. Every individual has their own opinions. Were there any disputes between the team? Could you share any one of your disputes and how you solved it? - We have a lot of disputes either due to in-house matters or third parties. But at the end of the day, we solve the problems as we trust each other. Glam Empire Beauty is a second home to us, and we are a family. - I guess it's better unsaid, Haha 7. Makeup photography tips to readers. - It is not that important you need a professional DSLR camera for good pictures. Rather than that, you can invest in good ring light and an iPhone, and NO SELFIE. Besides that, the most important part of good makeup pictures is good makeup skills. KNOW THE TEAM MEMBERS You must write only one name no matter what. •

After launching her career in fashion, she embarked on her TV career journey by hosting an evening talk show on Himalayan Television which has led her to now run her own show “WorkMania” on YOHO TV. Let’s take a sneak peek into her life through this interview. 1. You have a Beauty studio and are into YouTube and acting too, yet you are perfect in each field. Is it difficult to manage time and what is your core interest? - It is very difficult to manage time because all of these things whether it's YouTube, beauty studio, or acting takes a lot of time and patience. Despite it looks like it is not timeconsuming, it takes a lot of time so it is very difficult to manage; some days it gets crazy, and some days I am kind of free. - Being a social person, my core interest lies in actually having a good conversation with a person whether it’s through a camera or my beauty studio with my clients. 2. Do you remember your first client? - I do remember. Talking in the context of Nepal, the first client I ever remember was when I went to FWEAN. I was helping my mom out with stalls and somebody saw me there and they really liked my makeup so they came home and I did their Bridal makeup.

3. Despite your tight schedule, what do you do in your free time? - I am a big-time foodie, so whenever I am free I like to go to different places and try out different types of food or go to my favorite places and have my regular items on the menu. 4. What do you consider the worst beauty trend that is totally a NO to you? One beauty tip to readers. - I think one of the worst beauty trends at one point in terms of looking beautiful was tanning. Before and after your marriage did you find any difference in your ongoing career? What would you suggest to women wanting to start something up on their own? - Not at all. After my wedding, having a very supportive life partner made things easier for me. Also due to this pandemic, he has been helping me with my business. - If you want to start something on your own that's completely fine, make sure that you know what you want because once you start a business, it gets very busy. You need to have passion for that project otherwise it might burn out Rapid-Fire Round 1. What scares you? - Losing my loved ones 2. - Self-decision-making and independence. 8. What made you add a beauty course to your business? - Customer demand is what led me to start a beauty course at Beauty Hub. Most of my customers were working women and they were willing to come to Beauty Hub after their office hours and take classes as it would be convenient to them. 9. When can we see a new branch of the Beauty Hub? - I have thought of opening a branch and it is easy to start too. But I focus on stock availability rather than opening new branches. 10. What piece of advice would you give to college graduates who want to become entrepreneurs? - I would suggest choosing a field of your interest, collecting experience by working in the same field, working hard, and having dedication. 11. What are the things you suggest we consider before buying products to not be trapped by fake sellers? - Firstly, educate and inform yourself through the internet about the products and the beauty stores. Furthermore, be careful and check the expiry date and scan the barcode before buying products.

Is Age Just a Number ? A few days ago I was scrolling through TikTok when I saw a video with the caption “He is 23 and I am 16”. Contrary to my thought process, this video was made to show them cute and in love. I asked a couple of my friends about this trend and some of them agreed with me saying “it gives me creepy vibes”, while some argued,

28

“Age is just a number”. But is age just a number? All situations demand nuances. You cannot deem anything right or wrong without looking at the intricacies of the topic. While yes I do advocate that love is between two (or more if you are into polyamory) consenting people

BIZbold regardless of their age, gender, race, caste, etc, the key point always remains that it is between “CONSENTING” people. The age of consent in many countries is between 16-18 whereas it can go up to 21 and controversially can be as low as 13. This means in most countries, including Nepal, a person can give consent only after the age of 18. So if people have a “consensual” relationship with a minor when they are 18 or older then that is not only morally questionable but also illegal. Technically it is legal to date a minor but you cannot have any sexual contact with anyone under the age of 18. But if you are dating a

law to address relationships between minors who are close in age like The United States’ "Romeo and Juliet" Laws. The main objective of statutory rape laws and the minimum age of sexual consent is to protect minors from abuse from predatory adults. It recognizes that a person under a certain age cannot consent to sexual contact or activity because developmentally they lack the maturity necessary to decide on sexual activity. These laws are made to protect minors from consequences of early sexual activities including unwanted or early pregnancy, exposure to sexually transmitted diseases, mental traumas,

teenager when you are already an adult, it could be seen as grooming and it can be quite difficult to prove that you have not had any type of sexual contact with them. Statutory rape, in many jurisdictions, is a nonforced sexual relationship between an adult and an individual who is not legally old enough to consent to the behavior. If sexual contact with an underage person involves force or coercion, or if you were in a position of authority over the victim then this would fall under a separate law. Even when no force is involved and the sex appears consensual, this act is still a crime solely because of that person's age. In some countries, these laws do not take into account relationships between young people who are close in age. For example, in Nepal, if a boy (17 years old) and girl (16 years old) have a sexual relationship, then the boy can still be charged with statutory rape even though they both are under the age of 18. If a girl who is 18 years old and a boy who is 17 years old are in a sexual relationship then the girl may be charged even though they are very close in age with each other. Some countries have exceptions to this

etc. These laws are present to protect children, so even though the minor may seem “mature”, “consenting” and “not harmed by the experience” it is still the duty of the adult to be responsible enough to protect the minors and their sexual wellbeing in a relationship of unequal power instead of exploiting them. So you can say “Age is just a number” when all the people involved in the relationship can and are consenting, they do not have any kind of power imbalance like one of them are in the position of power like their teacher, boss, senior, etc and they are all in the similar walk of life. We cannot treat any situation and statement as black and white, we need to delve deeper and learn the contexts. It’s not a one-size-fits-all statement. So yes, Age is just a number when two people who are in their 20s and 30s with 12 years difference and are in a similar walk of life without the power imbalance. But no Age is not just a number when you are talking about an adult dating a minor. - Sujani Shrestha, LACM

Going Digital In the past few years, technologies and apps have changed the landscape of comfort and convenience. Various innovations have helped us transition smoothly even in the middle of the Pandemic. Here are a few App sectors that have changed our lives.

Teaching and Learning Platforms With the rapid advancement of technology, the concept of the teaching-learning process has more or less been inclined towards it. From readily available information at the tip of our fingers and traveling a long distance to attend a class, - to the flexibility of attending a lecture without being physically present in the classroom, we have come a long way. Students who had otherwise busy schedules now have much more time available to them due to the virtual classroom. When talking about the popular apps that have been able to alternate the traditional learning environment to a virtual setting, very few names come to mind. The popularity of Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams has been gaining popularity over the past few years. These apps were built with the purpose of providing an easy, accessible, and reliable cloud platform for video conferencing by organizing online meetings, chats, calls, screen sharing, and filesharing options, and other unique features. Zoom has remarkable screen-sharing functionality, image quality and is supported on all platforms, including iOS and Android devices. It has created its unique brand names with the popular saying “Let’s zoom it”. It has, by far, the highest meeting capacity out of all the major video conferencing platforms and allows 500 people maximum at a time in a Zoom call, without any disruption in the server. So hosting a virtual event or seminars via the zoom platform is more productive and a better option. Google Meet is a pure video conferencing solution that caters to around 2 million new users every day, offers live streaming for up to 100,000 viewers within a domain, and can record meetings on Google Drive for later broadcast. It is easy to set up calls using Google Calendar, meeting link URLs or codes, dial-in by phone numbers, and through proprietary Google

30

Meet software like Chromebox and Chromebase for meeting devices. Like Zoom it is also easy to use but has better security with call-end encryption and adds more productivity at a lower price. Microsoft Teams is the integration between Team and its Office 365 stacks that allows for seamless collaboration, backups, file search compared to other apps and is most suitable in business settings. The usability of Microsoft Teams is a bit challenging compared to other apps as the user needs knowledge in interacting with different channels and Teams, incorporating file sharing, and also all of the other Office 365 applications baked into Teams. So it can be best utilized in businesses and schools that have already invested in Microsoft Office 365. These international digital platforms and apps have made our life easier, but taking inspiration from different international apps, Nepalese industries have also adopted new technologies and curated them just for the Nepalese market.

Digital Wallets in Nepal With the advent of technology, digital wallets have grown to be extremely popular in Nepal with approximately 4 million users. In the sector of information and technology, digital payment is the most recent breakthrough. The use of an e-wallet to make an online payment is a global trend that Nepal cannot ignore. From ATM debit/credit cards to e-banking and mobile banking to the M-wallet trend, we’ve come a long way. Digital payment has proven to be an excellent substitute for traditional payment systems (cash/cheques). Individuals and firms can easily clear their purchases in just a few clicks while seated in a corner of the room or office. Digital wallet services providers like E-Sewa, Khalti, and IME pay have become popular among users in a short period as they currently provide services for making payments such as top-up, money transfer, purchase of movie tickets along with shopping bill, EMI, ordering of foods, ride-hailing services, insurance, and credit card payments. There

BIZtech has been a paradigm shift in consumer’s banking and shopping preferences as a result of these services. In this current pandemic era due to COVID 19, the use of digital platform is increasing as are the number of new online portals and e-commerce platforms. Various banks and financial institutions have developed their applications and websites promoting digital payment. Several individuals prefer online transactions as there is a high risk of COVID due to which business of the digital platform is escalating. These platforms have been successfully achieving customer loyalty as it provides flexibility, convenience, comfort, accessibility, and availability. E-Sewa, a pioneer in the digital payment industry and a pacesetter in Nepal with more than 7.5 million users was established to help and support the e-commerce business. It is driven by a mission to provide a secured, integrated, and most comprehensive payment process for businesses, associations by going above and beyond to help customers, banks, merchants and maintaining high-quality customer service and risk management. The most impressive fact about E-sewa is that it has incorporated biometric verification via the user’s fingerprint. Besides this phenomenal service, it provides cashback and reward points upon each successful transaction.

pinpoint locations, and track rides. The most famous ride-hailing apps are Pathao, Tootle, Easy Taxi Nepal, etc. Pathao is one of the most popular ride-hailing services in Nepal. Founded in Bangladesh, Pathao has been able to gain a lot of loyal customers in Nepal. Pathao provides a safe and economical ride-sharing option to people inside Kathmandu valley. A unique quality of this app is that it provides not only two-wheeler and four-wheeler options, it also provides customers with fast food delivery options via Pathao Food. Tootle is a ride-sharing service app that is made in Nepal, to provide a reliable, convenient, and affordable alternative to Nepalese people. With rides that are continuously monitored and flexible riding options, it has managed to gain popularity among the youth of Kathmandu valley. A variety of payment options are also available to suit the needs of different people.

Ride-Sharing Apps in Nepal

Easy taxi Nepal is a taxi-hailing service developed in collaboration with Upatyaka Taxi Bewasahi Tatha Chalak Sewa Samaj. Taxi have been used by the general public of Nepal for a very long time, but using smartphones to hail a ride is a new phenomenon that is growing in popularity. Easy Taxi Nepal’s app can be used to request rides from the taxi circling your neighborhood. The service has options for cash as well as digital payment.

Another intriguing app is the ride-sharing apps, also known as ride-hailing apps. Traveling in a public vehicle is practically a nightmare at this point. Even though we can get a public vehicle for almost any place that has a roadway, the situation after we get inside the vehicles is another story. The struggle of being cramped inside a small space, the vehicle stopping for what feels like hours, the fear of picketers, or even harassment are faced by public vehicle commuters regularly.

It is safe to say in a country where bus routes cannot be found online, the growth of ride-sharing online applications is as astonishing as it is wonderful. We can clearly see the popularity of these apps growing but they are only limited to very few cities of Nepal. The ongoing pandemic may also have dampened their plan of expanding to cities other than Kathmandu but we hope the growth of the industry can help these services expand to different places of Nepal.

The ride-hailing apps have been very helpful to the commuters on most of these problems. They have also made nighttime travel convenient as they are reliable and affordable than any previously available options. Unlike other countries, the most common mode of transportation in Nepal is two-wheelers so most apps focus on them, with some adding options of a taxi or sometimes even car. The apps work with Global Positioning System (GPS) to trace routes,

With these Apps and apps similar to them, we have transitioned from traditional methods for learning, payment and even transportation into digital one. So it is safe to say we are slowly but surely Going Digital. Editorial Team (Sujani Shrestha , Shruti Vaidya , Shreena Rajbhandari, Smriti Shakya , Gobinda Kayastha) LACM

What will be the future of cars? If you ask anyone what the future of automobiles looks like, they'll almost certainly say electric, with Tesla at the vanguard of the trend. But what if I told you there's another option that's just as excellent, if not better, than batteryelectric vehicles? What if you could power cars with the universe's most abundant resource and only produce water as a byproduct? They're also more likely to cause disruption in the auto business than electric automobiles like Teslas. Hydrogen fuel cells have been a technology that has sparked both excitement and skepticism. Elon Musk, the co-founder and CEO of Tesla, has called hydrogen fuel cells "mind-bogglingly stupid," but that isn't the only criticism he has leveled at the technology. He's branded them "fool cells," a "load of rubbish," and said at a Tesla shareholder meeting years ago that "success is simply not feasible." Most of us know about BEVs, or battery electric vehicles, which are the electric vehicles with which most of us are familiar today, such as Teslas, BMW iX, and Kia Soul. They store electricity in a battery and use it to power the electric motor. A hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, or FCEV, such as Toyota's Mirai and Hyundai Nexo produces electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, which then powers the car's electric motor. There are three primary reasons why individuals do not purchase battery-electric vehicles such as: longer charging time to charge, a restricted range before needing to be recharged, and are significantly more expensive than a comparable gas-powered vehicle. When it comes to charging, hydrogen vehicles outperform battery-electric vehicles. An electric vehicle like Tesla can charge anywhere from 30% to 50% in 15 minutes at a supercharging station, but a complete charge will take over an hour. Fuel-cell vehicles do not require any kind of charging. The hydrogen tank can be recharged in less than five minutes at a hydrogen station, exactly like a gas station today. This is due to the fact that FCEVs do not store electricity like

32

a battery; instead, they generate it on demand to power the motor. When it comes to range, hydrogen-powered vehicles appear to be the clear winners once again. The fuel-cell vehicles now on the road have a range of 502-612 kms. The majority of electric vehicles have a range of less than 400 kms. While some Tesla models have a range of over 482 kms, they are generally beyond reach for the ordinary car customer. The main benefit of hydrogen cars is that they emit no emissions at all at the tailpipe, only water. This benefit is the same as with a regular electric car, putting both at the cutting edge of emission-reducing technology in the automotive sector. The advantage of hydrogen cars over

BIZtech electric cars is that they can be filled at a gas station, which takes only a few minutes. You fill up, pay, and get on with your day, just as you would with a gasoline or diesel car, rather than having to wait hours for the same amount of range to be added to the battery pack.Although hydrogen is environmentally friendly when used in a hydrogen car, getting the (liquid) hydrogen to the fuel pumps requires a lot of energy, and much of the current production is done with fossil fuels, so it contributes to global warming more than, say, an electric car charged with wind farm power. Automotive executives believe Fuel-Cell vehicles will be the breakthrough for electric mobility because of their range and refueling durations. That isn't to imply that fuel-cell vehicles are without their own set of problems. Pricing

for FCEVs has to be more competitive. Fuelcell vehicles available today have a suggested retail price of roughly $60,000, which is around $20,000 more than a basic BEV in the US market. This is due to the extremely small production size of these cars. It's nearly tough to keep pricing competitive when only a few thousand or hundreds are produced each year. But that could be about to change. Automobile manufacturers are attempting to enhance manufacturing of FCEVs. Toyota, in example, has tenfold boosted its production capability in order to lower the price of its Mirai. The lack of infrastructure is the real obstacle for hydrogen fuel cells. In the US, the majority of hydrogen stations are in California, with just over 40 available to fuel-cell owners. A large network of hydrogen stations is required for FCEVs to become the breakthrough that automotive executives anticipate they will be. And automakers are attempting to make that happen one step at a time. BEVs will face a difficult task if and when fuelcell vehicles gain traction. They'll have to expand range while reducing recharging time and cost at the same time. The law of diminishing returns, however, limits battery-electric vehicles. A larger battery is required to extend the range. A larger battery will increase the car's weight. After a certain point, adding weight doesn't give you any more range. It's all about the numbers with FCEVs. More hydrogen stations equals more automobiles, and more cars equals more fuel-cell vehicles that are more inexpensive. Tesla holds a monopoly on the zero-emissions market in the United States, with a stunning 60% market share. However, this represents only 2% of the total US car market. When we talk about the global car market, those numbers drop. Although Elon Musk calls the technology "mind-bogglingly stupid," hydrogen cars could pose a threat to Tesla. The only thing holding FCEVs back is infrastructure, and when hydrogen stations become more widespread, Tesla may lose a significant portion of the zeroemissions market. - Aashish Wagle, LACM

Book Review: Nitesh Kr. Shah, LACM Siddhartha, novel by Hermann Hesse was published in German in 1922. The name Siddhartha might suggest that it is the story of the Buddha but it is not that conventional story. Many people might feel just by looking at the name of the book that they know the story. But only after delving into the book they would know this is the story of a boy named Siddhartha who was dissatisfied with the life that is expected of him. In the story author has also created a situation where the boy Siddhartha meets with the Gautam Buddha. This conversation suggests that the context of the novel is almost 2600

This struggle directs the boy’s life and he starts an extraordinary journey by leaving all the comforts of life. In this journey he evolves by learning through his own experiences and finally attains what he pursued. The essence of the book is that one should not be driven by any doctrine. The journey of enlightenment is about self-discovery. The teachings and dogmas of others might be a burden in this quest. So, one should seek one’s own truth.

TRADING HYSTERIA (GAMESTOP CASE AND NEPAL STOCK MARKET )

GameStop has gone from a dying retail chain to the latest media and market obsession in the rally of redditors. Hedge funds on Wall Street got a whiff of opportunity and then started betting heavily that the company’s stock would fall, which can be understood as a short trade or short position. At the same time, a group of stock market enthusiasts gathered in Reddit's WallStreetBets online chat room realized that maybe they could beat the Wall Street Boys in their own game. This kind of started as a value based investing which is technically called short squeeze. The redditors sort of advertised posting the screenshots of their portfolio and buy positions of stock, this fueled the frenzy, building the momentum which was also abetted by the commission free trading platform like Robinhood. For limiting the damage, hedge funds companies too had to buy GameStock shares, pushing the stock even higher. However in the end, the high volume of trading and ensuing market volatility forced Robinhood to restrict trading on a short list of stocks popular in the reddit rabble including GME stocks. The bullish traders of the day rallied to buy shares of GameStop, which pushed the price up more than 20 times and sparked complaints about the manipulative nature of the frenzy. It can be argued that all these people in social media are one group and the market mechanics are breaking down however the call to buy the stock among social-media users is protected under “free speech.” The move of Robinhood and other trading platforms to restrict the trading of stocks can be viewed as market manipulation. While many

38

retail investors were effectively prevented from buying more GameStop shares, institutional investors continued to trade. This depicts the manipulation of the market by these Wall Street traders in their favor taking advantage over the small investors. Through my lenses while being an active observer and passive investor of Nepalese stock market since the past few years, we have witnessed a lot of dynamic changes in Nepalese stock market from open outcry system to this semi-automated TMS. Insider trading, misleading information, false trading, stock cornering and circular trading are very popular illegal activities being practiced in Nepalese stock market. The issues of AJOD right share, hydropower company financials, and approval of FPO of BPCL can be a list of nearest examples. Similarly, the prevailing bull rally of hydro companies with weak fundamentals even those whose production is yet to start can also be considered as an example. The provision of the loan ceiling of 12 crore issued by NRB in the latest monetary policy shook the stock market and caused the downturn of overall Nepse to the circuit level on September 5 as the big investor protested against this provision which was not in their favor. The gradual increase in interest rates, decrease in liquidity in banking sectors and strict margin loan policy of 12 crore were the major reasons for that decline in the market. Taking the leverage of these policies and news in the market, big investors seem to have manipulated the market in their favor creating panic in the small investors. This can be observed from the fact that with the increased panic sales

BIZanalysis

of stock there was also an increased number of buyers in the market. The news of intervention of MOF(finance minister) spread then the Nepse was seen to increase to circuit level the following day on september 6 this signifies how these big investors filled their pockets within a day, taking advantage of the small investors leveraging the policies formed by the control authorities. This shows the market manipulation by the big investors which can be related to the case of Gamestop where retail investorswere restricted to trade even when institutional investor continued to trade. As the Nepaesle stock market moves in a herd mentality where big investors decide to trade on a certain stock which is then moved along with the analysis of technical experts. The intervention of MOF can also be viewed as the act of market manipulation. The time to time intervention of SEBON, NEPSE and other brokerage firms listing and writing in favor of certain stocks can also be considered as the persisting market manipulation in Nepalese stock market. Lesson: The Gamestop saga and activities around NEPSE have morphed into a lesson for all of us: Investing isn’t a morality tale, and it’s not a game. -Binayak Ghimre, LACM
