Halal Food
Halal market in trillions of dollars worldwide

A growing number of Polish firms are adjusting their production methods to conform to Halal certification requirements, thereby opening up large new markets, particularly in the Middle East. The Halal certification is accepted as a symbol of quality and hygiene not only by Muslims but non-Muslims as well, and there is large market to be explored, as seen by recent trade show visits by Polish firms to Saudi Arabia and UAE. The Chairman of the Pakistani-based Department of Agriculture and Agribusiness Management, KU, Prof Dr Saleem Shahzad, says that Halal – and the Sharia way of slaughter - is important in the light of Sharia. A relatively small number of Polish firms have Halal certifications, although the number continues to grow.

Dr Shahzad says, “Only knowing about Halal and Haram things is not enough. We should know everything about the product and its ingredients. Each and every component of the food and the way of its preparation and every step of the supply chain has to be certified as Halal by a competent authority. Even a minute amount of component, the way of its storage or supply that is not Halal can make the food Haram.” He also said that there is a tremendous market for Halal products throughout the world worth trillions of dollars. “Implementation of Halal procedures and getting your products certified as Halal by a competent authority can improve health standards besides increasing your exports tremendously,” ■ he said.
