Your company’s operations in CEE? SSC programme initiated in 2017, the first centre has been set up in Katowice in January 2018, currently 40 employees (F&A and digital marketing) with the plan to broaden the scope (5 other functions to be established in the SSC by the end of 2019). Current outlook for the end of 2019 headcount: 230 FTE. Other SSC to be established world wide, with one GBS organization located in Germany. Explain why your company set up operations here, and any specific factors that influenced the company’s decision: • SSC programme is a part of a wider global transformation programme with the objective to reduce the overhead cost in the company, optimize the processes and create efficient and effective structures in the company. • Poland selected as a location due to the right mix of maturity of SSC/BPO sector, the availability of talent pool as well as the right cost structure. Some low cost European locations did not qualify as cost has not been a predominant decision factor. • Katowice selected as an emerging SSC/ BPO city, with the view on Krakow as being much more challenging from the recruitment market perspective.
• TUV Rheinland Polska main office is located in Zabrze, so the SSC in Katowice has also the advantage of being in close proximity to the business operations. RPA and Process Automation – please tell us what your company is doing in this space. RPO is an important element of the programme, with the pilot projects to be installed within digital marketing (Lead Management) and F&A (P2P). Activities handled internally by a project team within the global transformation project. Full roll out in 2019. 3 specific bits of advice to other firms considering setting up in CEE.
Employee Issues – and what are the employment challenges in the coming years. Skills: as always, it is a combination of specific skills and a specific language that poses a challenge. German language seems to be in high demand in Poland recently. Prolonged transitions (where staff members are asked to travel abroad for the periods of time above 6 weeks) are unfavourable from the candidates’ point of view. Work-life balance has become a huge topic and a ‘flexibility’ of staff which used to be a very strong selling point in Poland a few years ago has been much limited in the past two years. Biggest surprises about operating an SSC centre in CEE. No surprises. I have been in this business for 14 years in CEE now… Przemyslaw Siuda has been a manager in SSC/ BPO sector in CEE since 2004. His career story includes setting up a number of multi-functional, multi-lingual service centres in Poland, Romania and Lithuania. Take the advantage of being an early entrant. • Market the location internally in your company even before the centre is formally set up. • Prepare very thoroughly an offer/package for the affected employees in the incumbent location to ensure the retention of knowledge throughout the transition.
