Valencia, Calif., June 18, 1972 while making his first start in six months, Gary Dranow sailed to a hard-fought, almost unbelievable overall victory against a tough field of Open Seniors, during today's ACE motocross program at Indian Dunes Park. In his first of three heat races with the Open bunch, young Dranow ran in about: the position, which one would expect from a rider making a comeback after such a lengthy seat on the sidelines, finished in seventh place. Yet, when the time arrived for contesting his last two motos, CZ-riding Dranow made a miraculous recovery in both events, sweeping past a swift and formidable field for steam roller-type wins! Although Will Harper was able to maintain a narrow lead over Dranow for a few laps of their final moto and Harper had won the first heat he was unable to continue the blistering pace for the entire race, and when he dropped back to third' place, Dranow was an easy victor over a charging Rick Jones, who was Bultaco-mounted.
