2012–2013 Multicultural Qld partnerships program annual grants round THE Queensland Government is committed to creating more inclusive communities and celebrating the rich cultural diversity that exists in our state. I am pleased to advise that the 2012-2013 Multicultural Queensland Partnerships program annual grants round is open. The grants round offers funding for community events and projects that promote multiculturalism, positive community relations and community capacity, including improved access to services, under the following categories: • week-long festivals • multicultural festivals • cultural heritage events • strengthening capacity projects I encourage organisations and community groups across Queensland to consider submitting funding proposals with innovative strategies, such as the new week long format, to support the promotion of increased community awareness about Queensland’s rich cultural diversity and its benefits, and improved support for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to access services. Queensland Multicultural Week, alongside Lunar New Year Week and Italian Week are the official ‘State Government’ endorsed and promoted weeks. Applicants from across Queensland are encouraged to hold their community events within the dates stipulated below. This format will assist applicants and their community’s ability to expose the many benefits of their event to a wider audience. Each event will be promoted and included as part of the State wide promotions. Participation in this week can be comprised of a single event which occurs on a particular day, up to a multitude of several events across several days. The proposed event must be held at a time relevant to: • Lunar New Year (10 – 24 February 2013) • Italian Week (26 May – 2 June 2013) • Queensland Multicultural Week (1 – 9 September 2013).

The year 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Australian South Sea Islanders, who were first brought to Queensland between 1863 and 1904 from eighty Pacific Islands, but primarily from Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands to work in the sugar industry. Since then, Australian South Sea Islanders have played a major role in the economic, cultural and regional development of Queensland, contributing to many other aspects beyond the sugar industry. Australian South Sea Islanders have a unique place in Australian and Queensland history as a distinct cultural group. The original South Sea Islanders were first brought to Queensland between 1863 and 1904 from 80 Pacific Islands, primarily Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, to work predominantly in the sugar industry. Of mainly Melanesian descent, they were for nearly 50 years the industry's principal labour source. Organisations which are looking at developing activities that commemorate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Australian South Sea Islanders in Queensland, and proposals that aim to increase community awareness about the needs or promote improved support for Australian South Sea Islanders are encouraged to apply for funding. The 2012–2013 Funding Information Paper has further details about other funding priorities, funding categories and how to develop an application, and can be accessed at www.multicultural.qld.gov.au/ multicultural. The closing date for applications is 10 October 2012. If you require further information on the program or the Funding Information Paper, you may contact Multicultural Affairs Queensland on 3224 5006.
