OLLI LECTURES
NPL in North Dakota
Clay will talk about the farmer discontentment that led to the formation of the Nonpartisan League in 1915, the success of the League in 1917 & 1919, and the League’s attempts to change the economic conditions for the farmers of North Dakota – and beyond. He will explore the leadership of A.C. Townley, William Lemke, and William Langer, the creation of the State Bank of North Dakota in Bismarck, and the State Mill and Elevator in Grand Forks. Clay will illustrate the lecture with images of the NPL’s newspaper, The Leader. And he will explain how political blowback, hubris, and the coming of World War I curtailed the work of the League. By 1925, the old guard had retaken control of North Dakota.

Field Trip
Join scholar Erik Holland for a day trip to several historic places along the Missouri River north of Bismarck. Topics to be discussed may include Lewis and Clark’s time in North Dakota, Mandan and Hidatsa culture at historic sites along the last “natural flowing” stretch along the Missouri River. We will spend time walking and talking at the sites, appreciating the activity that was daily life in the villages and environs nearly 200 years ago. You will hear some daily reporting, written in the 1830s, which may make these well-preserved archaeological sites come to life. Holland will introduce you to the Hidatsa and Mandan people who traded at Fort Clark and lived in the Knife River Indian Villages and at Mih-tutta-hangkush.
This excursion will leave from BSC at 9 AM sharp. Please arrive 15 minutes early. We will return to BSC at approximately 5 PM. Water and a box lunch will be provided. Please dress according to the weather and be prepared for a lot of walking. Please register by May 17.

Many women have followed, providing the world with useful inventions. A few women covered in the class will be Maria Beasley, who successfully marketed at least 15 inventions; Beulah Henry known for 49 patents and 110 inventions; and Admiral Grace Hopper, who was so inventive that she was known as “Amazing Grace.” Ann will also include her Honorable Mention list.

Wow! There’s A Lot of Science in Beer: A Historical Overview of the Process and a Look to the Future
This fun and informative class takes place at North Dakota’s Gateway to Science on the new wrap-around deck overlooking the beautiful Missouri River! After the gallery has closed for the evening, explore the science of beer with Laughing Sun owner, Mike Frohlich, and sample some tasty hometown brew! Yeast has been eating sugar for a long time, and the brewing process is not that different than it was 6,000 years ago. Our understanding of the brewing and fermentation process has grown by leaps and bounds. This class will touch on the history of beer, the brewing process, and how modern brewers are innovating to meet consumer demands. We will look at yeast and bacteria from the microscope’s perspective and discuss new developments in yeast, malt, and hops. Participants will be able to sample malt, wort, and hops followed by a sampling of finished beers showcasing techniques and styles discussed during the presentation. Must be 21+ to participate.
