Lakeside Swim Club to Lakeside Seahawks:

MASCOTS

& TEAM IDENTITY by: TOM COONS

Lakeside Coach & OVC Historian

NEVER THINKING THAT THIS would be important information at any point in the future, some of the facts are vague and hard to come by: I can only start from what I know. In 1974, I had a tryout for the Lakeside Swim Club Swim Team. When I joined the team, it was still small enough to swim at the Quarry – outside in the summer and under the bubble in the winter. At meets, we were listed in the heat sheets as LSC: Lakeside Swim Club.

Here’s where the details get a little more vague. Sometime around 1981, Lakeside Swim Club’s team outgrew that bubbled pool at the Quarry, and they started swimming during the winter at what is now the Mary T. Meagher Natatorium. The team also outgrew its administrative relationship with the Club. One of the results of the team’s success was that more swimmers wanted to train with Lakeside, and soon there were so many that Lakeside Swim Team became a separate entity. As a part of this new, independent direction for the team, the coaches thought that a mascot would help build and support team identity. Team coaches, staff, and swimmers were presented with mascot options for a vote: the Vipers, the Sea Monkeys, or the Seahawks. The Seahawk mascot won by a large margin. (There 4

were no recounts, hanging chads, or Russian influences.) Dennis Pursley, former Lakeside Head Coach (and current Head Coach at Alabama), said this about the Seahawk mascot: “I liked it because it embodied all of the attributes I was looking for: speed, water, and competitive fierceness.” The team has had three different Seahawk logo designs since that time. The first was designed by William H. Trees, father of Olympic medalist Tori Trees (and if you look closely at the image, you can see William’s note: “Dedicated to Tori from her Dad”). The next logo featured a Seahawk that was very “Pacific Northwest” in style (and if anyone has a picture of it, this unofficial historian could use a copy!). Finally, we have the present day logo, with the Seahawk in flight and racing to the finish. Though some of the details of the history might be fuzzy, the Lakeside Seahawks are proud to be part of Lakeside Swim Club, and are proud that the Club has offered us the opportunity to grow into the swim team we have today – a team that embodies the attributes of the Seahawk: speed, water, and competitive fierceness. BETTER

NUTRITION for better

RACING as seen in

Swimming World

Proper nutrition is critical to meeting the challenging demands of swim training. Falling behind nutritionally, even for a few days, can seriously undermine swimmers’ ability to train at peak levels. It is not uncommon to blame a disappointing training session on fatigue, when in fact, it was caused by poor swimming nutrition. Swim meets present another challenge for swimmers. Although most events are relatively brief, swimming multiple events over multiple days can seriously deplete hydration and glucose levels, inhibiting performance. To address these challenges, swimmers must have a nutritional gameplay for training and competing. The gameplay focuses on three vital areas of sports nutrition including hydration, fueling, and recovery.

HYDRATION

Fluid loss is one of the greatest threats to swimmers’ ability to perform. High-intensity training sessions, heated pools, exposure to hot temperatures, and high humidity lead to significant losses of fluid and sodium via sweat. Many swimmers gauge fluid loss based on how thirsty they feel at the moment, but the sensation of thirst does not take effect until after a significant loss of fluid has occurred. Fortunately, dehydration can be avoided through a disciplined hydration plan followed before, during, and after training and competition. 20

FUELING

High-volume swim training relies heavily on carbohydrates to fuel working muscles. Even a few hours of training can seriously deplete swimmers’ glycogen levels, the major source of energy derived from consuming carbohydrates. When glycogen levels plummet, performance suffers. Fortunately, an acute reduction of glycogen can be avoided through a disciplined fueling plan followed before, during, and after training or competition.

RECOVERY

Contrary to popular belief, the physical benefits derived from training are not fully realized until after training has ended. It is during this period that repair to damaged muscle fibers occurs, leading to greater muscle strength and endurance. Swimmers who actively promote recovery, via sound nutritional habits, reap the rewards; while those who ignore this all-important process suffer.

START THE TRAINING SESSION FULLY HYDRATED

To ensure ideal hydration levels, swimmers should consume 1420 ounces of water or a sports drink prior to the start of training. Swimmers can determine their own hydration level by observing the color of their urine. Urine, light in color, indicates good hydration; while urine, the color of apple juice, indicates poor hydration. To prevent this from occurring, swimmers should rehydrate periodically throughout the training session. Consuming L AKES ID E

S EA H AW KS

energy gels at the same time can help to refuel glycogen levels. Most gels are designed to be consumed every 20-45 minutes.

START THE TRAINING SESSION FULLY FUELED

Many swimmers show up to morning training on an empty stomach, with glycogen levels low due to overnight fasting. The following high-carb options are an excellent way to start the day: • • • • • • • • •

Toast, jam, and fruit juice Fruit smoothie with mango, banana, berries, and low-fat yogurt Meal replacement drinks High-carb bars, energy gels, or energy chews Cereal with fruit, and low-fat or skim milk French toast or pancakes with maple or fruit syrup Breakfast burrito (scrambled eggs, salsa, and low-fat cheese in a whole wheat tortilla) Bagel or English muffin with jelly or peanut butter Small roll or sandwich made with banana and honey

SWIM MEETS

On race day, a high-carb meal should be consumed at least two hours prior to competing. Swimmers should avoid slow-todigest high fat foods such as bacon, sausage, cheese omelets, and fried potatoes. 2019

OH IO

VA LLE Y

CH A MP I O N SH I P S

To ensure adequate hydration 14-20 oz of water or a sports drink should be consumed at least two hours prior to competing. Swimmers should also monitor their urine color throughout the day to ensure ideal hydration levels. Energy levels should be maintained via water or sports drinks, fresh fruit, sandwiches, cereal, granola bars, high-carb bars, energy gels, or energy chews. Swimmers should also remember to jump-start the recovery process once competition is over for the day by consuming additional protein for muscle repair, carbs to reload glycogen levels, and fluids for rehydration.

A FEW ADDITIONAL NUTRITIONAL TIPS

Swimmers should aim for a well-balanced diet with a variety of carbohydrates, lean proteins, and healthful fats.

• • • • •

Carbohydrates should be the main focus of meals, but protein is also important. Vegetarians should consume non-meat sources of protein including protein shakes, tempeh, tofu, lentils, and nuts. Swimmers should drink a large glass of water upon waking up each morning. To keep energy levels up throughout the day, swimmers should snack on low-fat microwaved popcorn sprinkled with parmesan cheese, trail mix without candy pieces, or a peanut butter sandwich on whole grain bread. Pistachios are an excellent nut option as they are lower in fat than other nuts. 21

SEAHAWK

HIST RY by: Pat Forde

Early information for this timeline comes from “The Lakeside Story” by Jack Thompson

March 1, 1924: Lakeside is “born” in a certificate holders’ meeting that draws up bylaws for the neighborhood and lake. September 8, 1928: First major swim meet is held at Lakeside. According to the Courier-Journal story on the meet, more than 1,500 fans attend the “swimming carnival.” The meet featured 50-, 150-, and 300-yard swimming events for men and women in three different age groups, plus a “fancy diving” competition. Event winners are awarded watches and silver cups. 1938: AAU Men’s National Championships is held at Lakeside. Under Coach Bud Swain, Lakeside lays claim to the national championship in Senior Women’s swimming, based on results at the National/Olympic Trials meet in Portland, Ore., and another national meet the following week in New Jersey. Lakeside swimmers Mary Moorman and Ann Hardin make the U.S. Olympic team but the Helsinki Games are canceled due to World War II. (Lakeside’s male swimmers are powerful as well, but most were paid lifeguards at the same time and thus ineligible for AAU competition.) 1940s: Lakeside helps pioneer synchronized swimming, then known as “water ballet.” 1954: Reflecting its broadening regional appeal, the annual Lakeside Open meet is renamed the Ohio Valley Championships,

Vintage Lakeside from the early 1940’s, 34

the moniker under which the meet continues today. It is the oldest annual meet in the country. 1963: Lakeside swimmer Alice Driscoll wins gold at the Pan American Games in Brazil in the 200 breastroke. 1972: Jack Tingley wins gold medals at the World University Games in Moscow in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter freestyle. 1975: Camille Wright wins three Pan Am gold medals, in the 100 & 200 butterfly and as a member of the U.S. 400 medley relay. 1976: Wright wins a silver medal as a member of the U.S. 400 medley relay at the Olympics in Montreal. Wright also competes in the 100 and 200 butterfly at the Games. July 7, 1979: At age 14, Lakeside’s Mary T. Meagher – who would come to be known as “Madame Butterfly” – sets the world record in the 200-meter butterfly at the Pan Am Games. April 11, 1980: Meagher sets the world record in the 100-meter

Lakeside’s Mary T. Meagher owned the 200 fly world record (2:05.96) that stood for over 19 years and is considered one of the greatest records in sports history.

butterfly as well. After moving to the Cincinnati Marlins with Lakeside teammate Lisa Buese and Coach Dennis Pursely, Meagher was a heavy favorite to win multiple gold medals at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow before the United States boycotted the Games in protest of the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. Buese also made the ill-fated ’80 Olympic team. August 13, 1981: In Brown Deer, Wis., Meagher swims her fifth world-record time in the 200 butterfly, establishing a mark (2:05.96) that will stand for the next 19 years and is considered one of the greatest records in sports history. August 16, 1981: Meagher breaks her 1980 world record in the 100 butterfly, establishing a new mark (:57.93) that will stand for the next 18 years. 1981: Lakeside Masters team is formed. The program has gone on to produce multiple national champions and record holders. 1984: Meagher wins three gold medals in Los Angeles at the Summer Olympics. Lakeside’s Tori Trees finishes fifth in the L.A. Games in the 200 backstroke. 1987: Lakeside’s Dorsey Tierney and Kara McGrath both win gold medals at the Pan Am Games in Indianapolis. L AKES ID E

S EA H AW KS

1988: Meagher earns a bronze medal in the 200 butterfly in the Seoul Olympics. Lakeside’s Leigh Ann Fetter, a seven-time NCAA individual champion and American record holder at Texas, finishes fifth in the 50-meter freestyle at the Seoul Games. 1991: Tierney wins three gold medals at the Pan Am games in Havana, Cuba. Earlier in the year, she set an NCAA record while winning the 200 breaststroke for Texas. 1992: Coach Mike DeBoor is named National Age Group Coach of the Year by the American Swim Coaches Association. 1993: Coach Mike DeBoor is named National Age Group Coach of the Year by the American Swim Coaches Association for the second consecutive year. 1995: Coach Mike DeBoor is named assistant coach at US Olympic Development Camp and assistant coach at the Girls’ National Select Camp. 2000: Lakeside men win their first short course Junior National Championships. 2002: Coach Mike DeBoor is named Head Coach of US FINA World Cup Team. 2003: Coach Mike DeBoor is named Head Coach of Boys’ National Select Camp. 2004: Rachel Komisarz earns gold and silver medals on U.S. freestyle relay teams at the Olympics in Athens. She also swims the 100 butterfly in Athens after winning the event at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Coach Mike DeBoor is named Head Coach of US FINA World Cup Team. 2005: Lakeside men win their first long course Junior National Championships. Coach Mike DeBoor is named National Junior Team Assistant Coach.

2007: Caroline Burckle wins gold in the 800 freestyle and Elizabeth Tinnon wins bronze in the 200 breaststroke at the Pan Am Games. Coach Mike DeBoor is named Head Coach of the National Junior Team. 2008: Burckle, who earlier in the year won two NCAA championships swimming for Florida, earns a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics as part of the US 800-meter freestyle relay.

2008 Olympic bronze medalist Caroline Burckle

2011: Lakeside alum, Clark Burckle (brother of Caroline and an NCAA individual champion at Arizona), wins a silver medal in the Pan Am games in the 200 breaststroke. 2012: Clark Burckle makes the US Olympic Team and competes in the London Olympics with a 6th place finish in the 200 breaststroke. Clark becomes Lakeside’s 10th US Olympian and its first male Olympian. Burckle competes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the Short Course World Championships.

2004 Olympic gold and silver medalist Rachel Komisarz

2006: Rachel Komisarz and Elizabeth Tinnon compete for Team USA at the Short Course World Championships. Coach Mike DeBoor named head coach of the US World Championship Team and Assistant Coach for the Pan Pacifics Championship Team. 2019
