HIGHLIGHTING AN EXCITING END TO A CHALLENGING YEAR

Our169thcommencementtookplaceJune5—thesecondyearin a row in the school yard.

Although every one of our 169 graduating classes is unique and special, the Class of 2021 will go down in history as one of the most remarkable. The resiliency they displayed, for the past two academic years, was truly extraordinary. Their senior year started with questions like “how can the school community stay safe when the hospital down theblockisoverrunwithverysickCOVIDpatients? How can my two sisters and I take classes online at the same time with one laptop?”Otherseniorsasked,“howcanI take my music class online and will theyrequiretheSATthisyear?”or,“how can I make a college decision withoutseeingthecampus?”There were many, many other questions and uncertainties.

One at a time, we worked on solutions to these questions together: the

PTA/families, students, guidance counselors, deans, faculty, and staff.Thewayafamily would. And, it worked!

A special congratulations to our Valedictorian,HannyEcheverria-Navarro and

Salutatorian, Skylar Grady, who delivered powerful speeches during the graduation ceremony.

A SCHOLARSHIP GROWS IN BROOKLYN

For the third time since 2018, a Loughlin graduate will attend Providence College in Rhode Island on a four-year full scholarship established by Ronald ‘58 and Janet Stride.

The Class of 2021’s recipient of the Stride Family Scholarship Fund is Ronan McGouran ‘21. Ronan was on the varsity basketball team, a member of the National Honor Society, and became a student ambassador during his senior year. He attended Mark Twain IS 239 near Coney Island and Gravesend. Ronan is studying Economics and playing basketball at Providence. Congratulations Ronan.

In2018,LindaIneuswasthefirstrecipient of the scholarship. She is studying Biology and preparing foracareerinVeterinaryScience.In 2020 Anastasia Hussett, who is studying Political Science with the goal of becoming a lawyer, was also awarded the scholarship.

At the current tuition, room and board, and expenses, each student’s scholarship is valued at $280,000 over four years.
