TO ALUMNAE AND ALUMNI

Dear Fellow Hawks Welcome to the digital edition of the Hawkeye. We are truly inspired by the remarkable dedication of our alumni community. Your continuous support through generous donations and active engagement in alumni events is invaluable in preserving the legacy and spirit of our school. We take pride in our mission: Transforming lives through the teachings of Jesus Christ in the Catholic tradition. This is at the heart of everything we do. We're grateful that you're with us on this journey!

“Do not be afraid. Do not be satisfied with mediocrity. Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” —Pope St. John Paul II

We've been overjoyed to see so many familiar faces returning to Hartley. Your presence breathes life into our school and strengthens our sense of community. The past months have been filled with memorable events—from a recordbreaking alumni golf outing and an unforgettable Homecoming and HawkFest weekend, to a vibrant Open House for prospective families and celebrating our Hartley Cornerstones. We've welcomed new Hall of Fame inductees, marked milestone reunions, and even revealed our new basketball court!

We have an array of exciting events on the horizon! We're already prepping for Catholic Schools Week starting January 28, alumni visits to sunny Florida in February, and a Day of Preparation and Leadership on April 5. Be sure to mark down Founders Day on April 26 and plan for the 33rd Evening of Excellence on April 13. We'd love to see our alumni at our biggest fundraiser of the year! Your presence adds a special charm to these events. It's a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends and revisit the campus that holds a special place in your hearts. We couldn't be prouder of our alumni community and the amazing things you continue to achieve. We encourage you to share your life updates, wins, and milestones. We're excited about what the future holds and look forward to many more opportunities to engage, connect, and celebrate together. So, don't be a stranger! Stop by, say hi, and let's continue to make Hartley a place we're all proud to call home. God Bless and Go Hawks!

A special shout-out to the classes of 1973, 1978, and 2003 who came out for our Homecoming celebration, and to the class of 1988 for choosing our campus as their reunion spot. Watching you all reconnect and reminisce during the school tour was a joy to witness. And the best part? We're just getting warmed up! We want to express our genuine gratitude to our alumni golfers for their unwavering support and generous donations, and to the class of 1968 for their contributions to the Alumni Legacy Endowment. A big salute to the class of 1988 for launching an endowment fund. Your efforts are creating a lasting impact and will undoubtedly shape the lives of future Hawks.

Sincerely,

Christopher Kowalski Shelly (Dunkle) Skelly (1985) Principal Alumni Coordinator

COVER STORY—PART 1 Shawn Parker, Bishop Hartley Class of 1983, was a basketball player from 1979-1983. Prior to attending Hartley in 1979, Shawn attended Christ the King Grade School. He later attended The Ohio State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. Shawn also completed graduate business work at The Ohio State University. Shawn has had a decades-long career in real estate and is engaged civically in his community in Delaware County. He is the Founder and CEO of Parker Realty Associates, Co-owner of New Perspective Asset Management, Board Member Lonicera Private Equity, Member of the Columbus Realtors Commercial Advisory Board, and Chairman of the Delaware Ohio Republican Party. He is passionate about Catholic education for the next generation of students and families. Shawn reflected on the impact of a Hartley education, saying: “My time at Hartley created lifelong friendships. We learned early that every person has value and the importance of getting to know people of different socioeconomic backgrounds. The staff at Hartley never made us focus on our differences but taught us the importance of our commonalities. Our teachers and coaches taught us the value of hard work and helped us to love learning while seeing the beauty of bringing all of the elements of our classes together to gain a better understanding of the world we lived in. They also wrapped our Catholic faith around every element we learned, so it was there for us even when we didn't expect it.

As a Hartley alumni moving through life, that faith foundation has arisen in times of sorrow and joy to help us carry on through helping others. As I look at the countless names of the teachers who have laid this pathway for students, I reflect on who we would be without them in our life path. I often think of my dear friend, Father Franks, who had a common saying: “the joy of the Holy Spirit shines from you.” That is a comment about both a gift and a responsibility each of us carries in our lives. I have used it to build my life, both professionally and in my family, passing along these values. The Hartley family is a vast network that finds you later on in the strangest of places, but it always holds an open hand, whether it is helping you up or asking you to help another.

COVER STORY—PART 2 Johnny Clark, Bishop Hartley Class of 1982, was recently named Head Coach for the Great Falls Electric for the upcoming 2024 season. The Electric is a men’s professional basketball team located in Great Falls, Montana and competes in The Basketball League (TBL).

“My first three years weren’t great academically, as I was an undisciplined and unmotivated student. Going into my senior year, as the college recruiting intensified, I knew I had to buckle down with those books, and I did! I also found out that schoolwork isn’t difficult if you take notes, study, prepare, read your materials, do your assignments, and invest. After my senior season, I was named All-CCL, AllCentral Ohio District 10, and wore the Hartley uniform a couple more times, being selected to play in two All-Star Games.”

Johnny is a former pro point guard/shooting guard in the US and overseas, and currently a Player Development/Shooting Coach assisting with players from grade school to the pros in their basketball development, with an emphasis on shooting and offensive skills. Johnny has served as a Head Coach, Assistant Coach, and Assistant in player development worldwide, including the NBA, WNBA, CBA, Europe, China, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. Over 30+ years he has personally coached or assisted many all-time great players, including LeBron James, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, as well as former OSU Buckeyes Jim Jackson, Dennis Hopson, Chris Jent, Evan Turner, “Scoonie” Penn, Jon Diebler, Derek Anderson, Mike Conley, and Brian Brown. With his decades of work and dedication to the game of basketball, Johnny has been elected to the Greater Columbus Basketball Legends Association Hall of Fame (2019), and the American Basketball Hall of Fame (2022). He also received a “Legend Award” from the prestigious Central Ohio Kingdom Summer League, and a Columbus Recreation and Parks Wall of Fame (Barnett Rec Center) selection. After graduating from Bishop Hartley in 1982, Johnny began college in Missouri on a basketball scholarship. As a 17-year-old college freshman, he sustained the first of several basketball injuries, and being so far from home and unable to play, he became homesick and became what he jokingly calls “the inaugural poster boy” for what’s now known as the infamous “transfer portal.” He transferred to Cuyahoga CC, and then to one of the top junior college programs in the country, Hagerstown Junior College in Hagerstown, Maryland. After playing there with great success and accolades, he finished his college basketball career in Arkansas, even teaming up briefly with future NBA AllStar, Champion, and Hall-of-Fame inductee Scottie Pippen, at the University of Central Arkansas. After college, he was able to play professionally in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), World Basketball League (WBL), United States Basketball League (USBL), and overseas.

“I was born and spent my early years on the Westside of Columbus, in an area 'known as 'the Bottoms'. I attended Saint Aloysius grade school, which was a feeder school to Bishop Ready. My older brother Ray was a part of two State Championship basketball teams at Ready, and my sister Paula attended Ready, as well. Later, being able to travel the world through basketball. In 4th grade, my parents divorced and my mom, my sister, and I moved to Warrensville Heights, Ohio in suburban Cleveland. I attended Randallwood Elementary School and Warrensville Hts. Jr High School, where I was a teammate of future Ohio State Buckeye and NBA player Brad Sellers.” He moved back to Columbus after 8th grade and enrolled into Hartley as a freshman. Johnny played four years of basketball and ran track for three years at Hartley. Johnny thanks his coach, Dick Geyer, for helping with this process. “I would play for him again. Wonderful man and coach.” Other influences from his time at Hartley include, “Ann (Maurer) Smith, Bruce Kotlinski, Larry Wolfe, Tom King, Mark Aprile, and so many other staff at Hartley who had an impact on me, as well as so many students and classmates (too numerous to name)…once a Hawk, always5a Hawk!”

This article, originally published in the DeSales Weekly (a newsletter of the Oblates of St. Francis Desales), was sent to Bishop Hartley and authored by Fr. Dave Kenehan, Bishop Hartley Class of 1963.

For God and Country This Saturday is Veterans Day. In 1991, I found myself with thousands of other soldiers/veterans in Iraq for Desert Shield/Storm. I kept a journal and wrote faithfully in it every day. In 2002-2003, I was a student at the United States Army Senior Service College in Carlisle, PA, where from that journal I wrote a personal experience monograph entitled, “Battalion Chaplain Desert Shield/ Storm.” Here I share with you a paragraph from that journal/monograph: On one particularly quiet morning as the sun rose gently, a magnificent blue sky was streaked with streams of red and white. It looked like our flag was being raised over the entire horizon. I was moved emotionally and spiritually. But where I most often saw the flag was in the faces of those young enlisted soldiers standing watch. They were America’s best: all races from every state and territory in the union. They proudly and faithfully represented our Republic on those bitterly cold desert mornings.

My chaplain assistant and I, who was also my bodyguard since chaplains do not carry a weapon, would rise early every morning and take hot coffee to those young soldiers on guard duty surrounding the perimeter of our battalion. These young men (we were an Armor Battalion so we had no women at that time), were not warmongers or soldiers of fortune. They enlisted in the Army for the G.I.Bill, for the college fund, to escape a challenging home environment, to improve their lot in life, or simply because they were patriots. The motto of the United States Army Chaplaincy is “Pro Deo et Patria,” For God & Country. The majority of the soldiers with whom I served were doing it for God and Country and most of them were men of prayer. As St. Francis de Sales wrote in The Introduction to the Devout Life: “It is an error, or rather a heresy, to say devotion is incompatible with the life of a soldier, a tradesman, a prince, or a married woman…” I recall a senior NonCommissioned Officer, the First Sergeant of a Company, coming to me before we went into battle and asking me to conduct a communion service for his unit. He was a devout Lutheran. After the service, you could see the joy in his eyes and the weight lifted from his shoulders. We lost one soldier during the fight and, even though he was not Catholic, I anointed him and sent a note to his family in Colorado. They were most grateful that a priest was there for their son. All of these young soldiers were, in the words of St. Francis, striving to “be who you are and be that well.” As we crossed into Iraq from Saudi Arabia, we encountered hundreds of young Iraqi men in the desert, sent there by Saddam without training. They were trying to surrender to the Americans and I am proud to report that our soldiers treated them with the utmost respect and kindness. Again, it reminded me of St. Francis' words: “Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength.” On this Veterans Day please pray for all those who have served in uniform and for their families.

Fr. David Kenehan, OSFS Chaplain (Colonel) United States Army (Retired)

REUNIONS A Summer to Celebrate Hawks Summer of 2023 was full of Hawk gatherings! Classes of 1961, 1963 (60 years), 1964, 1967, 1968 (55 years), 1973 (50 years), 1983 (40 years), 1988 (35 years), and 2003 (20 years) all convened with their fellow graduates to reconnect. Class of 1973 Celebrates 50 Years The Class of 1973 gathering included classmates from Florida, New Jersey, and Canada for a milestone reunion in September. Starting with an alumni gathering at Bishop Hartley prior to the football game, the group of alums cheered on the Hawks before heading to The Old Bag of Nails for libations and renewing old friendships. And that was just day one of reunion weekend! With an expected 115 attendees, including 80 graduates, the group came together at The Berwick; fitting as owner Tony Susi is a 1973 Hartley alum. The evening started with an opening prayer by Father Tim Lynch (Columbus St. Brigid), who is the son of classmate Bob Lynch. After dinner, Dave Heinmiller sang a solo of Bless the Broken Road (Rascal Flatts) and dedicated it to deceased classmates. Then the dance floor was open! Many hours later, the Class of 1973 bid each other a fond “See you at the next one...God willing, we will gather again and remember each other.”

CORNERSTONES During all-school Masses the past two school years, we have been honoring Hartley Cornerstones: Bishop Hartley High School faculty members and staff who are foundational “cornerstones” to what we do today. Through these recognitions, our current students learn about the lives and careers of longtime staff who made a difference. Many of these individuals taught parents and grandparents of current Hawks. We are grateful for the legacy of these men and women who laid the foundation for what Bishop Hartley is today.

Cornerstone Honorees Dick Geyer Mary Ann Rees Bob Telerski Kathy Servick (Class of 1971) Beth Motter (Class of 1969) Barbara Casson (Class of 1972) Jack Ryan (RIP) Fr. Jim Ogurchock (RIP)

GOLF OUTING Your support and enthusiasm were integral to the overwhelming success of the 2023 Golf Outing, and we are thrilled to share that we not only met but exceeded our fundraising goals. Your participation directly impacts the growth of the Bishop Hartley Alumni Legacy Scholarship Fund, and we are deeply appreciative of your involvement., Together, we raised more than $14,000 for the Alumni Legacy Scholarship Fund! We sincerely hope that you had a fantastic time on the greens and enjoyed the camaraderie of the day. Seeing familiar faces and meeting new friends is one of the highlights of such gatherings, and we're delighted that you could be a part of it. We had two teams tie for first place: Team 36 (Dave Boling, Matt Boling ’06, Josh Tasney and Ryan Wright) and Team 2 (Michael Armstrong, Matt Ference, Christopher Kowalski, and Andrew Merrill). Team 26 holds the honor as the team that had the most fun (Jack Cataline ’16, Jared Crosswell ’16, John Kurth ’16 and Ross Wirthman ’16).

HOMECOMING & HAWKFEST Bishop Hartley’s Homecoming & HawkFest took place, Friday, September 15 before the football Hawks took on Lima Central Catholic. Alumni enjoyed time socializing in the Telerski and Casson Center (TACC) before the game while current students and families participated in activities on the softball field. We had several food trucks including Tortilla Street Food, Seven Little Sliders, and Johnsons Ice Cream for all to enjoy. Special congratulations to this year’s Homecoming King and Queen, Andrew Bassetti and Piper Minnich. And thanks to the generosity of 1993 Homecoming Queen, Jayme Moore Smoot ’94, Piper was awarded a scholarship for her studies after Hartley. We are so thankful to our alum for making a difference in the lives of our current Hawks.

THEN & NOW At Hartley, we believe it is imperative for students to gain not only knowledge in high school but also real world skills to be successful. We expect students to use their education and make an impact. House Leadership was part of the transformation of our school leadership program 13 years ago when the House System was implemented at Bishop Hartley. Changing from a Student Government model, House Leadership is now hands-on and fully active in the daily life of the school and has increased the amount of leadership roles. Our House Leadership is important in fostering the school community and culture by building school and House spirit. Our leaders are tasked with developing student relationships, House activities and all-school activities. Our House System is engrained into the fabric of our school and reaches beyond house time with faith, service, and community activities our leaders plan and coordinate. 1973

2023

The House Leadership Advisory Board is a group of 12 seniors, and a coordinator, who to take the lead in guiding the school community. It consists of teams of two for each Pillar of our school with specific focuses and initiatives attached to the Pillars (Faith, Preparation, Community, Service, Spirit, and Leadership). These students are also integrated into House Leadership for their Houses, and responsible to relaying information to the mentor groups and planning and facilitating schoolwide activities throughout the school year.
