An Incoming Freshman’s Guide to Bishop Gorman High School

July 2013

To the Freshman Class of 2017: On behalf of Bishop Joseph Pepe, President John Kilduff, and the entire faculty and staff of BGHS, I want to extend to you a warm welcome to Bishop Gorman High School. The next four years of your life will be an exciting time as you move from simply being a teenager to becoming a young adult. Bishop Gorman is a wonderful place not only for forming young minds in a college preparatory environment, but also for allowing students to grow spiritually and emotionally. I would offer a few words of wisdom as you enter high school: 1. Remember that high school “counts” from Day 1. From an academic perspective, all of your grades matter as you prepare for college. Work hard from the moment you enter the hallways of Gorman to rise to your academic potential. The harder you push yourself in high school, the more doors will be opened to you in college and beyond. 2. Get involved! Do everything you can to become involved in a co-curricular activity whether it be athletics, fine arts, academic contests, or clubs. The more you involve yourself with the BGHS community, the more it will feel like your family and your home. 3. Advocate for yourself. High school is about growing up in many ways. One important skill you need to learn is to ask for help when you need it. Your teachers, counselors, deans, and principals are here to help you – but they cannot read minds! Your willingness to let them know where you need additional assistance will help them with their vocations as educators which will in turn help you to be more successful. Above all, I would ask that you place your high school journey at the feet of the Lord Jesus in prayer. Ask for the wisdom of the Holy Spirit over the next four years – that you may begin to discern who and what God is calling you to be. I look forward to seeing all of you in August, and again, welcome to Bishop Gorman!

August 15th 6pm in the Gym

Hello, Class of 2017! This is Dean Anderson, your freshman dean. I have already met some of you during Summer Enrichment, and I am looking forward to meeting the rest of you in August at orientation. For those of you who have had siblings attend Bishop Gorman, you are already familiar with the Gael Way, but for most of you, this will be a big change. This is why we have the freshman transition program, called PRIDE, and why this class has its own dean. Your counselors, your LINK leaders and all of the administration are really enthusiastic to have you join us for the next school year. Here are just a few words of advice to help you get off to a good start: 1. Complete your summer work before school starts and be careful not to copy or plagiarize! We really do check and compare and you do not want to start off the freshman year with a violation of academic integrity. No one is happy to learn this lesson the hard way. 2. Be sure that you know the dress code (including hair, jewelry and shoe standards). At the beginning of the school year we sometimes have to send students home to get haircuts. This again is not a good way to start the year. 3. Activate your Edline accounts (one for you and a separate one for your parents) as soon as you receive your activation codes. There has already been information posted to your class page on Edline. 4. Remember that Freshman Orientation on August 15th & 16th is mandatory. There is also a freshman parent orientation the night of August 15. The incoming freshman class will be one of the biggest classes to enter Bishop Gorman and we are excited to meet you and get going! Enjoy the rest of the summer!
