Charnwood Borough Council’s CCTV operators won the prestigious CCTV User Group Operator Team of the Year Award at a recent ceremony. Birstall’s 11 CCTV cameras are all monitored by the award winning team, which was started in 2007 with one full time member of staff and one contracted operator. It now has six full time staff and the cameras are monitored around the clock, seven days a week. The majority of Charnwood’s CCTV cameras are in Loughborough. Judges praised Charnwood staff for helping police arrest suspects, calling for back up when an officer was dealing with someone resisting arrest, stopping a suspected bank card ‘skimming’ operation and potentially saving a man’s life following an apparent assault. Councillor David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services and Chairman of the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership, said: “Far too often CCTV is demonised in the media for being intrusive. But the reality is these cameras, operated by highly trained and committed professionals, protect the public and Plumbing & Heating help police bring criminals to justice. Est 1968 I’m absolutely delighted for them and General Plumbing applaud the incredible work they do in keeping Charnwood safe.” Bathrooms & Tiling
