C

hristmas is not as much about opening our presents as opening our hearts.” Janice Maeditere True generosity comes from the identical place inside you as your inmost happiness. These two are inexplicably intertwined. A gift is something that is appreciated twice. Firstly by the giver who celebrates in the pleasure of giving something unusual and then it is also appreciated by the individual who accepts the gift. A very exceptional form of giving takes the form of small, personal acts of kindheartedness. It is often not about money or possessions that people want, it’s the things that can’t be seen, such as advice, comfort, a kind word, a compliments or a smile. The act of giving doesn’t have to be restricted to an exchange of gifts at Christmas time or Birthdays. You can treat everyone you come into contact with as someone who you can give a gift to. “When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things not the great occasions - give off the greatest glow of happiness.“ Bob Hope

n celebration of our 20th anniversary, Design House Stockholm is presenting itself in a highly unusual setting, namely Hallwyl House in downtown Stockholm. This grand mansion was completed in 1898 as the home of Wilhelmina – who was a passionate collector of both fine art and art crafts – and her husband Walter von Hallwyl. The interior of the house is in a mix of styles including elements from the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo eras. But, above all, the house has a definite personality which, like Design House Stockholm, emanated from a love of form. Design House Sweden has brought to fruition ideas from more than 70 independent designers from Sweden and other countries. Using outstanding design as a competitive element has proved to be a successful strategy and our range has

continued to grow with the addition of more attractive everyday wares for the kitchen, the living room, lobby, bedroom and bathroom in an effort to provide everything that is needed in a home.

“I wish everyone a peaceful and happy Christmas, and a wonderful new year with good health and lots of great new experiences that will put a smile on your face!

Christmas dinner together with family and friends is something Ann really appreciates. So is decorating the table.

Their Birch Christmas tree! Traditionally are spurce and fir used as Christmas tree in Scandinavia. Ann placed this delicate, naked and very beautiful Birch in their dining room, in addition to a fir in the living room. Christmas presents are placed under the fir the evening before Christmas, to be opened Christmas eve.

glassveranda A wreath similar to the one hanging on their front door (photo 8) is here used to create an advent candlestick. The wreath made of cones is places on a clear glass cake plate.

Clementines, gingerbread, eggnog and snow are also important parts of the Christmas spirit in Norway, -lots of white sparkling snow! Christmas music fills their home in December. Food also plays an important role in a typical Norwegian Christmas holyday. -Big dinner parties together with family and friends. Ann thinks Christmas most of all belongs to the children.

Polystyrene ring dressed in cinnamon sticks makes an amazing Christmas wreath.

Welcoming drinks placed on a silver plate. On the plate behind the straw-reindeer you see a polystyrene Christmas tree ball covered in cinnamon sticks.

Who

We are a small, passionate group of people whose right side of the brain dominates the left side. We want to inspire and be inspired. We want to create and be visionaries. And we want to share all of this inventive talent with the world, one customer at a time. Dustin Nyhus, CEO & Founder A Denver native, Dustin Edward NYhus is the namesake behind DENY Designs. But he’s more than just a name. He’s a creator, visionary and he’s got mad skills when it comes to designing and building furniture. It’s in his blood, as he grew up watching his father and grandfather build just about anything and everything. It inspired him and naturally, he followed in their footsteps. After graduating with a degree in Industrial Design from Metropolitan State College of Denver, he took off to sunny South Florida to design boats for Bertram Yachts. But as we all know, you can take the boy out of Colorado, but you can’t take the Colorado out of the boy. So, Dustin moved back to Denver and spent five years in wholesale manufacturing before he got the brilliant idea to combine both of his work experiences. Alongside his wife Kim, Dustin created DENY Designs and continues to be the brains behind the operation. You name it, he oversees it. He’s a busy guy living out his dream... and he’s just getting started.

Kim Nyhus, Co-Founder Originally from South Florida, the creative and fashionforward Co-Founder of DENY Designs inched her way to Denver over the last 10 years. How did she get there? By way of Dallas, where she attended SMU (go Ponies!) and met her future husband. After graduating with a degree in Advertising Management, Kim decided to move to the freezing cold, all in the name of love.

With each purchase from the Gallery, our team of talented artists earn part of the proceeds, enabling DENY to support art communities all over the world while also spreading the creative love! From custom furniture pieces to textiles, if it’s in the home décor category, DENY puts its own unique spin on it!

Why else would she trade 80-degree weather and flipflops for snowy days and UGG boots? And thankfully, it was a good move on her part because after working in advertising, event planning and television production, she ended up marrying Dustin, having twin boys (the cutest babies ever!) and starting this rockin’ company we call DENY Designs. Together with Dustin, Kim manages every detail of the company making sure that their creative vision comes to life from the carefully selected, highly talented DENY artists to the exclusive line of products that are offered.

What we do? Based in Denver, Colorado, DENY Designs is a modern, think-outside-the-box home furnishings company. DENY empowers its customers to transform dull, everyday household accessories into fun and original statement pieces by adding a personal image or selecting artwork from the DENY Art Gallery.

Grandparent’s Wall above This idea came to Kim after her grandmother passed away a few years ago. She was given the center photo of her grandmother from when she was in her twenties and the image was so sassy and fantastic that she found herself wondering what other treasured photos her grandparents had kept hidden

Dustin built this European-style bed when Kim & Dustin couldn’t find exactly what they wanted in the marketplace with built-in bedside tables and a storage area and sitting bench at the foot of the bed. It’s both modern and practical. Linen :- DENY Designs “random flowers” bedding by Valentina Ramos

When Dustin and Kim were figuring out what should go above their bed in the master bedroom, they quickly decided that a photo from their Naples, Florida beach wedding was just what they needed. They split the image into two parts to make the wrapped canvas a little more original. It’s a unique spin on their wedding picture and a nice way to wake up every morning

When the Nyhus’ first moved into their house, the master bathroom was itty bitty with a shower big enough for a small child. It was the first big project they took on in their new house and they more than doubled the size of the room. Dustin and Kim chose white Italian glass tiles for the floor and shower walls and mixed it with several different textures including a river rock shower floor, glass vessel sinks, exposed brick and custom cabinetry built by Dustin. Now this room is large enough to have a “party” in!

Kim + Dustin live in a 1928 Bungalow that has been updated through the years. It has the original hard wood flooring and windows, with a lot of cool antique feautres. This inclused a built-in milk box. However there is one thing this home lacks and that is space. So, for their long and narrow living space, they havd to select an entertainment center that would not dominate the room. Keeping it simple, with the master craftsman Dustin building the floating box. This is artistic and yet functional

above To complete the room, we turned yacht renderings that belonged to Kim’s late father and turned them into wrapped canvas pieces. The best part of the nursery? Dustin built all of the furniture for the room, including both cribs that can transition into toddler beds when the time comes. left This custom printed vinyl decal is what really makes the twins’ bedroom stand out. Using an ancient Chinese wave image and a Mark Twain quote, it’s the perfect inspiration for our two growing boys. Quote: “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

W

e don’t believe in inventory. Nope! Instead, we print each product after it’s ordered so that it’s 100% custommade for each and every customer. How is the finished product created? It would be boring if we printed our products like every other company out there, so being the forward thinkers that we are, we’re one step ahead of the curve using a dye printing process. Bet you’re wondering what the heck that is! In a nutshell, the ink is dyed into the fibers of the fabric (for textiles) or the coated aluminum (for our hanging art pieces) instead of the traditionally used direct print.

This gives DENY’s products a huge advantage, as our colors stay as fresh and vibrant as the day the product is received! Fade-resistant products make for happy customers!

Where do Abby’s sandals go in the winter time? Abby loves her pink and brown sandals with the lime green trim, and she wears them wherever she goes. But as summer draws to a close, Abby’s mom announces that it’s time for the sandals to go. Abby is determined to keep them on -until one day, while swinging at the park, her sandals flip off and fly away. All winter long, Abby wonders what her sandals are up to. Postcards of sandy white beaches and glorious sunsets reassure her that they are having a wonderful time in far away places. Come February, Abby realizes that she has also grown to love her cozy, comfy boots. As the warm weather comes, she watches sadly as they march off, but a swish in the sky announces the return of her pink and brown sandals -- all ready for another summer of fun.

artist, actress, talented Birch & Little love Rina Freiberg’s paintings so much that we had to attended the opening of her first show on Friday 19th October in Maylands. The location a quaint “pop up” shop hired for the week long show. The heritage listed store was filled with the vibrant portraits painted by Rina. The opening was shared with her fan’s, friends and family Each portrait evokes feelings of intense emotions, colors lovinly fill each canvas. The use of negative spaces intermingle with facial features, eye’s pleading, lips whispering, smiling or snarling. Each work filled with her passion.

emerging artist My work is what I cannot articulate with words; Some things are too uncomfortable to say. Or they don’t want to be said. Much of my work is the face. I started drawing faces when I was sixteen. I draw faces everyday and I draw faces in a way that makes sense to me. I don’t know who they are. I don’t think about it. It is not important. Deciphering the face is the first language we know as humans. It is the ultimate language. I have been painting for about year. Now I paint faces, and sometimes I paint other things…. But face after face satisfies me. There is no planning in what I do. My art is “the waste left behind as my brain churns, analysing, through what I am experiencing – it needs to go somewhere so draw or paint it out” – that is how it happens - I wish I could articulate it better. I believe that if you can read a face, you can see through to the soul. I guess I wanted someone to look at my face, see all that I couldn’t say – and save me.

“Rrah” is what I say. “Freiberg (who is actually an actress by profession, squeezing in painting between curtain calls) created Rrah’s works over the course of the past year. The compositions – mostly oils on canvas – take the form of portraitlike facial abstractions. Rendered with a bright, rainbow colour palette, Freiberg’s brush strokes are bold and committed, with key contours often complemented by frenzied, collage-like line detail. There’s even a table with paper and coloured pencils on hand in the gallery, should you feel artistically inspired to channel the moment…” http://thethousands.com.au/perth/look/rina-friebergrrah23/

lian photographer | toronto Lian’s fascination for vintage film cameras was what started the journey into photography. With a degree in mechanical engineering, and currently pursuing her PhD in the same discipline, she became quickly captivated by these old cameras. Lian would spend hours repairing them and studying their mechanism. As her collection grew over time and started collecting dust, Lian began to feel a pressing need to finally put these camera’s to some use. Look at the gritty result of her work. These photo’s are what Lian see’s through her camera lense. We hope you like what you see also.

Kaspar Faber (1730 - 1784) Pencil-makers were first recorded in the imperial city of Nuremberg around the year 1660. Numerous craftsmen also set up shop in the surrounding villages, but especially in Stein, just within the Marquisate of Ansbach. Here artisans were not subject to the same strict controls as in Nuremberg, so they had a competitive advantage. One of them was the cabinet-maker Kaspar Faber. At first he worked for local traders, but in his spare time he produced pencils on his own account. Soon he became so successful that he was able to set up his own business. From these humble beginnings it was to develop into a company known all over the world.

Our global commitment is an obligation I am sometimes asked why Faber-Castell voluntarily signed a social charter, valid worldwide, that forbids discrimination and child labour in all its factories and guarantees all the other conditions of employment of the International Labour Organization (ILO). As a proponent of a social free-market economy, it is both an obligation and something I take for granted to face up to the challenges of globalization. In the tradition of responsibility that my great-greatgrandfather confessed to with his pioneering social commitments, we provide humane working conditions around the globe and also help our employees to achieve a better standard of living and quality of life. That assures the long-term viability not only of our individual workers but also of the Faber-Castell group as a whole.

Partner Feature

One does not need to be a visionary to realize how important it is to preserve natural resources for the generations to come. Wood and trees are an embarrassing topic in many circles. So it is all the more satisfying that nearly 25 years ago FaberCastell initiated a forestry project which to this day counts as exemplary in the stationery business. Our 10,000 hectares of managed pine forest, the source of raw materials for our black-lead and colour pencils, have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) as “environmentally compatible, socially equitable, and economically sustainable”. Faber-Castell joined the United Nations ‘Global Compact’ in June 2003. That makes us one of the first medium sized companies to face up to the social, ecological, and economic challenges of globalization as part of a cooperative alliance between politics and private industry. I would be very pleased if more companies were to imitate the Faber-Castell example, bringing overworked words likes ‘sustainable’ to life with some practical deeds. To complement that, I also hope that politicians will continue to work on creating better conditions for responsible action on the part of industry.

Fred Hollows Foundation

Birch + Little have decided to support the as part of our commitment to the global community. In 1992, Fred and Gabi Hollows decided to set up The Fred Hollows Foundation to continue Fred’s work. Despite having been diagnosed with cancer in 1988 and knowing he didn’t have much longer to live, Fred started raising money to build an intraocular lens (IOL) factory in Eritrea, so IOLs could become more accessible to people who were blinded by cataracts. “By significantly increasing the supply of affordable high quality IOLs to developing countries, we will reduce one of the barriers to disadvantaged people having their sight restored.” At the time, treating cataract blindness was prohibitively expensive. An intraocular lens which is used to replace the damaged lens of the eye in cataract surgery cost up to USD$100. Mystique also surrounded the idea of modern IOL implant surgery, putting it into the league of open-heart surgery or organ transplant surgery. Fred wanted to lower the cost of IOLs, for under US$10 each. His aim was make IOL implant surgery safe, affordable and more widely available for people in developing countries. This proved difficult as the multinational IOL manufacturers refused to drop their prices that low. In true Fred style, he decided The Foundation would make its own.

Fred

In addition, Fred also wanted to develop robust and effective microscopes and YAG lasers to help improve cataract surgery in developing countries. In both cases, Fred and The Foundation were able to find Australian companies interested in developing low cost, durable, portable and robust equipment. A year after he died, Fred’s dream came true. In 1994, The Fred Hollows Foundation opened modern intraocular lens manufacturing laboratories in both Kathmandu (Nepal) and Asmara (Eritrea). Since opening the laboratories have produced more than four million lens for local and export use. Today, the Fred Hollows IOL Laboratories are independently owned and continue to produce high quality low cost IOLs which are exported worldwide. This was the start of Fred’s dream. Today, The Foundation International, is ensuring Fred’s work lives on delivering results and offering hope, dignity and opportunity. We are proud to be a supporter of this Foundation. Lower East Side by Mike Herman

http://nyfoodjournal.blogspot.com.

Alan Kaufman works some nine hours a day, six days a week, elbow-deep in pickle juice, and yet the 44-year-old owner of the Pickle Guys doesn’t have a sour bone in his body. Even his staff, most of whom joined him when their former employer, Guss’ Pickles, left Essex Street early last year, act as if life were a pickle party. The daily grind produces remarkably fresh stock, from new to fully soured, with that perfect snap and spray in

Newyorkfoodjournal

This will provide you with a tour of the neighborhood’s street food, just one of the many food genres available there. This article covers the foods of immigrant populations that have influenced the neighborhood, focusing on the offerings of the Jewish immigrants who passed through at the turn of the last century, and the Chinese immigrants who are increasingly making their mark on the neighborhood today.

Here at New York Food Journal, we’ve been known to express our affection for street food, which I am liberally defining as snacks, sandwiches, and assorted treats that you can usually purchase at an establishment that does not have waiter service. While our prior coverage has examined street food in New Orleans, it is high time to explore New York’s offerings in this food genre and where else should we go for this but the Lower East Side. The Lower East Side has among the most diverse arrays of culinary options of any neighborhood in the city, in part because of all of the immigrant groups that have passed through the neighborhood over the years, and in part because of the relatively recent influx of young professionals who, in addition to frequenting the loud, crowded, dudetacular dance parties at the neighborhood’s clubs, have some money to spend on food.

If you’re particularly ambitious, like I was with a small group one afternoon, you can hit virtually all of the places discussed in this and the next post the same day - don’t over-order or you’ll never make it! Katz’s is the best known of the bunch, having achieved lasting fame from When Harry Met Sally -- though it is also the least Jewish; it is the only one that is not Kosher. It’s unclear to me why anyone would want to accept their inexplicable offer of American cheese to top their world-class pastrami. But you always see a few hapless tourists springing for it anyway.

NY.

Foods of Jewish Immigrants

Katz’s Half of a pastrami sandwich at Katz’s . Katz’s has a bizarre ordering and payment system, in which everyone who enters receives a “ticket.” Each “cutter” - the men who hand-cut the pastrami, corned beef, and other meats - will write the price on your ticket, and then you pay on the way out. Lose your ticket? That’ll be $50 to leave. (They also have waiter service at the tables closest to the wall of photos). Separate lines form behind each of 3 or 4 cutters and it’s best to scout which cutter is cutting the meat to your liking that day. Usually, a nice cutter will hand out samples of pastrami while cutting your order. All sandwiches come with sour and regular pickles - the sour are great.

Katz’s Matzo Ball Soup - incredibly dark broth

Kossar’s Bialys

dine with me

Kossar’s Bialys is one of the two bialy powerhouses in the city (the other is Bell’s). A cousin of the bagel, the bialy, named after Białystok, Poland, is smaller than a bagel (about half the calories), and is only baked while bagels are boiled and then baked.

In 1998, Kossars decided to try their luck at bagel making. At first, it was a work in progress. Now, Kossars have a bagel that has been touted in the media and among food circles. They put just as much care into their bagels as they do their bialys. Kossars hand roll the bagels using the finest ingredients available. Rather than substituting cheaper brown sugar, which eliminates any old-fashioned flavor and texture, they use real malt to bring authenticity back to the bagel. Allowing the bagel to proof slowly over a 24hour period and then each bagel is kettle boil prior to the final baking. Taste them and you’ll agree that they are the best New York has to offer.

http://www.kossarsbialys.com

Instead of a hole, there is an onion-filled depression. Kossar’s is an old-school place with a huge visible oven and trays of bialys and bagels (they sell those too). Try the bialy with a light schmear of cream cheese.

jewish food http://nyfoodjournal.blogspot.com.

The oldest bialy bakery in the United States, Kossar’s Bialys has been handcrafting its bialys, bulkas, pletzels and sesame sticks for over 65 years.

While the Jewish street food on the L.E,S reflects the older generation of immigrants who settled in the neighborhood, newer generations of Chinese immigrants have more recently arrived, spreading Chinatown far beyond its traditional boundaries and well into the Lower East Side. Two of my favorite dumpling houses are clearly within the LES, though you couldn’t tell from being there -- the block looks just like you are on Mott street in Chinatown. Vanessa’s and Prosperity both sell excellent dumplings at unbelievably cheap prices. Both have the same watered down sriracha and soy dipping sauces. Prosperity is slightly cheaper you can get 5 chive and pork dumplings for $1 there, whereas similar dumplings go for 4 for a $1 at Vanessa’s. But you get what you pay for Vanessa’s are better. While many people opt for these ridiculously cheap dumpling options, it’s worth spending a little more for Vanessa’s awesome sesame pancake sandwiches with roast pork ($2.25) and their shrimp wantons with spicy sauce ($4.00 for 8).

The sesame pancakes are the size of pizza slices and are thicker than at your typical Chinese restaurant. They easily support ample amounts of roast pork, carrots, and scallions. The wantons are filled with shrimp and come swimming in a spicy sesame oil sauce with a lot of kick. Vegetable Dumpling at Prosperity Vanessa’s is a hectic place, but also a nice space with blond wood tables and ample lighting. Prosperity is a hole in the wall with just a few stools and not the cleanest counter (though they did receive an A grade). While the 5 for $1 chive & pork dumplings are good, try their vegetable ones next time, which are light and filled with a large variety of veggies (8 for $2.50).

Kellie Long Personal Trainer Kellie Long is an experienced Personal Trainer who is not unfamiliar with the pain of being unhappy in her own skin, both physically and emotionally. How to make it through the chaos with no added weight on the scales! That’s right, have your pudding and keep the zipper done up to that gorgeous new skirt or jeans you bought just for the holiday season! How you might ask? Well it’s all about being aware of what’s behind you and what’s in front of you: the past year and all your hard work and the New Year with all those new resolutions.

SURVIVAL TIPS FOR FESTIVE PARTIES: 1 | The top tip is eat before you go! Make sure

your last meal or snack is on time and high in protein and fibre. That will keep you feeling full and both your metabolism and mood high. After all, it’s a party you want to be firing on all cylinders - it’s the season to be jolly, not tired, hungry and grumpy! A good meal or snack should enable you to enjoy your time at the party without over indulging in food that’s not good for you or your waistline!

Surviving th Silly 4 | Offer to drive so you don’t drink and save calories.

5 | If you’re going to eat at the party choose wisely - proteins and vegetables first and watch your portions. Don’t have seconds just because you can. Do what you should.

6 | Ask yourself do I really want it?

2 | Mingle with confidence. People are less

7 | Avoid extras such as gravies, creams, and

likely to pressure you to eat or drink if you seem at peace and comfortable with yourself and your surroundings.

sauces - they are high in sodium/sugar. Steer clear of excess salt - it means bloating and fluid retention.

3 | Alcohol could be your festive season

8 | Go for vegetable sticks - these will give

downfall if you’re not careful. Out of all your gatherings choose just one where you indulge in alcohol and have water at the others. Have your water in a wine glass (perhaps even with a slice of lemon) and hold onto it like you’re proud of it! If you’re having alcohol, have it in-between a glass of water. “Want another?” “No thanks, I’m pacing myself” or “I’m driving!” Remember you are the boss of you! You don’t

you great nutrition and help hydrate you while making your body burn calories whilst breaking them down.

9 |Distract yourself with dancing or meeting

new people - don’t get stuck on the sidelines at festive gatherings.

10 | Enjoy your parties don’t regret them!

Kellie’s MAINTENANCE TIPS FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON:-

1 Keep to (or start) regular exercise - even walking

can have a healthy impact. At least you’re not on the couch! Walking is worth the effort, especially in summer.

2 Eat clean! Cut the junk before and after

Christmas and the New Year and you will sail through this season! People will tell you “It’s Christmas, you only live once,” and “life is meant to be lived and enjoyed”. My response to that is, “Yes life is meant to be lived and I enjoy it a lot better when I’m not overweight, when I have more energy and when I fit into my desired clothing!” It’s because I eat and train to live that I can splurge on certain days of the year, but the rest of the days I eat cleanly and exercise and enjoy it and so does my body!

he y season 3 Water - stay hydrated! It’s the most important

nutrient for our bodies and is involved in every cellular function. We need to make sure our bodies get water and the right amount every day!

B+L

For more information visit www.birchandlittle.com

fit | body 4 Boost your metabolism before and post-Christmas with some interval training and burn more calories. Work hard for a minute, rest for a minute. Work hard for two minutes rest for one. As you improve increase your work time speed load etc. and lessen your rest period. Have fun with it. You can do swimming intervals, running, cycling, weight circuits or walking.

5 Stretch! That’s right! Our bodies get so

overworked during this period (and that goes for office workers, stay at home mums or athletes). We all need to take time to stretch out our backs, chest, shoulders, quads, hamstrings, necks, triceps and biceps. This lengthens our muscles, which can get shortened, and tense. It also increases circulation to all areas and this will help reduce stress. Plus it feels good! Use it as a little bit of “you time.” Block out 20-30 minutes, put on some relaxing music and reward yourself and your body with this essential requirement. Alternatively, join a Pilates or yoga class.

6 Eat breakfast every day. Again, be kind to your body - it’s just fasted for 6-8 hours, so allow it every opportunity to work hard for you by kicking your metabolism off with your first meal of the day. Make it high in protein and include a complex carbohydrate.

7 Eat 5-6 small meals/healthy snacks per day.

Well-toned fit strong men and women eat! Make no mistake about it; if you starve yourself to lose weight or to maintain a number on the scales, you will do your body more harm than good. Keep your metabolism cranking (and fast burning) and your body happy by eating like a hunter gatherer small meals/snacks spread out throughout the day, consisting of natural fresh produce; i.e. nuts, seeds, eggs, fish, lean meats, fruits and vegetables.

8 Make sure you get enough sleep. This is an

essential requirement for your body and must be considered as part of your training regime. At this time of year we tend to go out more and that’s ok, but be realistic our bodies don’t function the best while we burn the candle at both ends. Manage sleep like every other aspect of your training. Most people need 6-8 hours of quality sleep every night. You know what your own body needs. You should feel rested and ready to tackle the day after a good night’s sleep!

Kellie Long Personal Trainer 9 Set yourself fitness and health goals, set them now. Why not even start them now?

10 No gym or time to train? The gym of life is

all around. So use it and have fun. Take the stairs, walk the dog, offer to walk your neighbours’ dog (I used to do this), park at the far end of the shopping centre car park. Play with your children at the park, take them swimming, go bike riding together, learn to dance with your spouse or partner. Get out there, get active and have fun doing it.

11 Make your Christmas list full of things that

will help you reach your fitness goals. Home workout DVDs, personal training package, gym membership, gift vouchers for new gym clothes, experience vouchers (sky diving, scuba lessons) roller blades, wet suit, a fitness magazine subscription. Think about it; what would you really like to look and feel like in the New Year and what could help you get there? What have you put off doing that you would like to try?

12 Keep a journal: log your food, your training,

your goals, adventures you would like to embark on. This helps you stay focused and on track. Trust me maintaining is easy if you know what you’re aiming for and what needs maintenance. Print these tips and stick them in your journal. WARNINGS:-

1 . DANGER The festive season really starts

mid-November, as staff parties and Christmas functions compete for reservations to the best locations for these social end of year celebrations.

2 Don’t allow yourself the DELUSION that 6

weeks of social functions, be they bbq’s or restaurant affairs and the one-off food & drink fest we all enjoy on Christmas Day won’t harm all your hard work of the past year.

3 Don’t dance with danger by giving yourself 6

weeks off for celebrations, (eating and drinking what you want and not training for two weeks). You may just spend the first half of THE NEW YEAR trying to regain the body you had 6 weeks before in Mid-November!

4 It is not just the food and alcohol that you

need to be wary of! It’s the HOLIDAY MODE! Sleep-ins, no school routine, summer breaks and all those public holidays that seem to run one after the other. Before you know it, it’s February! Spend too much time being inactive and you become inactive!

5 Visualise how you want to look and feel after

the festive season and enjoy the season through a healthy and fun active pair of eyes.
